Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh, provocative look at the link between poetry and Christianity, both as it relates to the Bible itself as well as to Christian and religious life, by an accomplished scholar. The Bible is full of poems. In the Old Testament, there are the Psalms and the Song of Songs, the great exhortations and lamentations of the Prophets, and passages of poetry woven in throughout. In the New Testament, Jesus describes the kingdom of heaven with poetic epithets such as “a treasure hid in a field,” calling the Son of God “the true vine,” “the light of the world,” “the good shepherd,” and “the way, the truth, and the life.” The Gospels reverberate with allusions to the poetry of the Old Testament; the last book of all is Revelation, a visionary poem. The Bible, in other words, asks to be read poetically from start to end, and yet readers have rarely considered what that might mean, much less heeded that call. In The Bible and Poetry, the poet and scholar Michael Edwards reshapes our understanding of the Bible and religious belief, arguing that poetry is not an ornamental or accidental feature but is central to both. He speaks personally of his early, unanticipated, transformative encounters with scripture. He offers close, insightful, and resonant readings of biblical passages. Poetry, as he sees it, is the vital and necessary medium of the Creator’s word, and the truth of the Bible is not a question of precepts and propositions but of a direct experience of its poetry, its power.

Book Early Christian Poetry

Download or read book Early Christian Poetry written by J. den Boeft and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays deals with the rise and development of early Christian poetry, discussing its techniques and its theoretical foundation. The individual papers concern specimina of Hebrew, Syriac, Greek and Latin poetry and study the various and partly conflicting traditions from which it originated. The biblical examples, e.g. of the Psalms, held great authority, but on the other hand it was impossible to break away from the models of classical Greco-Roman poetry, although these were deemed dangerous because of the pagan content and excessive cult of literary art. The book shows how the problems involved were solved in different ways, which justified the use of pagan literary accomplishments for singing the praises of the Lord.

Book Poetry and Exegesis in Premodern Latin Christianity

Download or read book Poetry and Exegesis in Premodern Latin Christianity written by Willemien Otten and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates various exegetical possibilities in Christian Latin poetry during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. In the Latin West poetry was mainly associated with the powerful pagan tradition of writers like Vergil and Ovid, and by many poetry was considered to tell lies and provide mere entertainment potentially corrupting the soul. Therefore, Christians initially had reservations about this genre and believed it to be incompatible with Christian worship, literacy and intellectual activity. In practice, however, forms of specifically Christian poetry developed from the end of the third century onwards; theoretical reconciliations were developed around 400 A.D. This collection examines specimens of Christian poetry from Juvencus (the first biblical epicist shortly after 300) up to the thirteenth century. Its particular usefulness lies in the combination of literary theory and hermeneutics, close readings of the texts and new readings on a sound philological basis.

Book Classicism and Christianity in Late Antique Latin Poetry

Download or read book Classicism and Christianity in Late Antique Latin Poetry written by Prof. Philip Hardie and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After centuries of near silence, Latin poetry underwent a renaissance in the late fourth and fifth centuries CE evidenced in the works of key figures such as Ausonius, Claudian, Prudentius, and Paulinus of Nola. This period of resurgence marked a milestone in the reception of the classics of late Republican and early imperial poetry. In Classicism and Christianity in Late Antique Latin Poetry, Philip Hardie explores the ways in which poets writing on non-Christian and Christian subjects used the classical traditions of Latin poetry to construct their relationship with Rome’s imperial past and present, and with the by now not-so-new belief system of the state religion, Christianity. The book pays particular attention to the themes of concord and discord, the "cosmic sense" of late antiquity, novelty and renouatio, paradox and miracle, and allegory. It is also a contribution to the ongoing discussion of whether there is an identifiably late antique poetics and a late antique practice of intertextuality. Not since Michael Robert's classic The Jeweled Style has a single book had so much to teach about the enduring power of Latin poetry in late antiquity.

Book Modern Poetry and the Christian Tradition

Download or read book Modern Poetry and the Christian Tradition written by Amos N. Wilder and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Modern Poetry and the Christian Tradition, Wildler examines this movement in poetry in relation to the direction in which our culture is moving. He interprets the significance of modern poetry and shows its relation to the "traditional." He gives attention to the representative poets of our time (including Dylan Thomas, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Allen Tate, W. H. Auden, Wallace Stevens, T. S. Eliot and others); he notes the wider implications of their work and assesses from them the impulses and trends of our age. As a poet of considerable ability, as a student of literary criticism for many years, and as a teacher, Wilder is in a position to know and understand his subject. The result is a book of permanent value to all concerned with the deeper meanings of civilization and Christianity.

Book Auden and Christianity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Arthur Kirsch
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2008-10-01
  • ISBN : 0300128657
  • Pages : 229 pages

Download or read book Auden and Christianity written by Arthur Kirsch and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the twentieth century’s most important poets, W. H. Auden stands as an eloquent example of an individual within whom thought and faith not only coexist but indeed nourish each other. This book is the first to explore in detail how Auden’s religious faith helped him to come to terms with himself as an artist and as a man, despite his early disinterest in religion and his homosexuality. Auden and Christianity shows also how Auden’s Anglican faith informs, and is often the explicit subject of, his poetry and prose. Arthur Kirsch, a leading Auden scholar, discusses the poet’s boyhood religious experience and the works he wrote before emigrating to the United States as well as his formal return to the Anglican Communion at the beginning of World War II. Kirsch then focuses on Auden’s criticism and on neglected and underestimated works of the poet’s later years. Through insightful readings of Auden’s writings and biography, Kirsch documents that Auden’s faith and his religious doubt were the matrix of his work and life.

Book Genesis in Late Antique Poetry

Download or read book Genesis in Late Antique Poetry written by Andrew Faulkner and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biblical book of Genesis stands nearly without parallel in the shared history of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Because of its abiding importance to late antique theology and practical life across religious boundaries, it gave rise to a wide range of literary responses. The essays in this book study an array of Jewish and Christian responses to Genesis as they took shape in specific literary forms—the unique genres of late antique poetry. While late antique and early medieval Jews and Christians did not always agree in their interpretations of Genesis, they participated broadly in a shared culture of poetic production. Some of these poetic genres paralleled one another simply as distinct examples of metered speech, while others emerged in conversation and through mutual influence. Though late antique poems developed in a variety of languages and across religious boundaries, scholarly study of late antique poetry has tended to isolate the phenomenon according to language. As a corrective to this linguistic isolation, this book initiates a comparative conversation around the Jewish and Christian poetry that emerged in late antique Aramaic, Greek, Hebrew, Latin, and Syriac. Tending equally to exegetical content and literary form, the essays in this book sit at the intersection of a variety of scholarly conversations—around the history of biblical exegesis, the formation of late antique and early medieval literature and literary culture, and the comparative study of Judaism and Christianity.

Book Unlikely Christian Poetry Collection

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlikely Christian is a collection of Christian poems and landscape photography that reassure believers and awaken skeptics to God's unmeasurable mercy and love. Through the median of words and photography, Charna Ainsworth probes the light and the darkness to uncover what it means to be an Unlikely Christian. Each poem explores a unique layer within the spiritual experiences of Christianity. With a descriptive ability to verbalize honest emotions shared by most people but mainly left unsaid, Ainsworth opens the door to explore these feelings. She shares her personal journey into the wonder of God's peace with revelations about purpose, life, relationships, and love. Every poem opens the heart to feel beauty, joy, and the spirit of life that dwells in all of us. This collection covers the gamut, from basking in the love of God to encouragement for those who have suffered grief and loss. There are even some for those who enjoy nature and for those who question the reasons of redemption. Every person who has ever questioned their worth or worthiness in God's eyes should read this book. And everyone who knows someone who believes their past or present circumstances deems them unworthy of receiving grace, should give them this book as a gift. Ainsworth's Unlikely Christian reveals God's profound love and His power to rescue even the most unlikely people from a life of abandonment and darkness. It will leave every reader with a deeper understanding that the promises of God are for those who believe, regardless of color, creed or religion.

Book Christianity and Poetry

Download or read book Christianity and Poetry written by Dana Gioia and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his celebrated essay Christianity and Poetry Dana Gioia proposes the radical notion that poetry is not merely an important element of the Christian tradition, it is "an essential, inextricable, and necessary aspect of religious faith and practice." Poetry is the proper idiom for the revelation of divine mystery.Analyzing poetry's role in scripture, Gioia argues that Christian mysteries could not be fully understood or expressed without the power of poetic language. Some truths require the utmost vigor of language to carry their full meaning. He also criticizes contemporary Christianity for the use of stale and prosaic language in its liturgy, translations, and worship. "The Incarnation," he writes, "deserves an ode, not an email."This is the final, expanded version of Gioia's influential essay, which was First Things readers' favorite of 2022. His monograph traces the development of Christian poetry, both sacred and literary, from Biblical times to the present. It provides a persuasive, clarifying introduction to the relationship between faith and poetry.

Book excerpt: Learning about the ancient Jewish tradition of midrash, a rabbinic form of textual interpretation that seeks and imagines answers to unanswerable questions, felt to Amy Bornman like a poetic invitation to re-engage with the Bible in a new way. There is a Future: A Year of Daily Midrash – an award-winner in the Paraclete Poetry Prize competition – grew from a yearlong project to read the Bible daily, and write daily midrashic poems in response to the readings—to honor the text by wondering about, and struggling with, it. By engaging particular passages of scripture across the Old and New Testaments directly, these poems imagine new dimensions of the text, and make vivid connections to the world as it is now and to the author’s own life—emerging at year’s end with new hope in a future that at times feels impossible, as the days pile on days and the text’s enduring questions continue to ring.
