Book The Missionary Enterprise

Download or read book The Missionary Enterprise written by Baron Stow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Enterprise: A Collection of Discourses on Christian Missions The task of selection has been, in some instances, peculiarly difficult. Several discourses, of great excellence, have been omit ted, which, perhaps, would have been included, had not circum stances appeared to encourage the expectation, that a second series might be demanded. Should this volume be favorably received, another may succeed, comprising not only sermons, but a rich variety of addresses, essays, and eloquent appeals, all pertaining to the same great subject -christian Missions. Many of this class of productions are too valuable to be left scattered in ephemeral forms, and should be gathered up, and added to the increasing stock of our Missionary literature, and thus made to extend and perpetuate their salutary efficiency. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing extensively on primary sources, this pioneer work in modern religious history explores the training of preachers, the construction of sermons, and how Irish evangelicalism and the wider movement in Great Britain and the United States shaped the preaching event. Evangelical preaching and politics, sectarianism, denominations, education, class, social reform, gender, and revival are examined to advance the argument that evangelical sermons and preaching went significantly beyond religious discourse. The result is a book for those with interests in Irish history, culture and belief, popular religion and society, evangelicalism, preaching, and communication.

Book Arguments in Favor of Missions

Download or read book Arguments in Favor of Missions written by Swan L. Pomroy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arguments in Favor of Missions: A Discourse Delivered in Portland, June 26, 1833, Before the Maine Missionary Society, at Its Twenty-Sixth Anniversary Every attentive reader of the New Testament must have Observed the very emphatic manner in which our Saviour ex presses his regard for his followers. Whosoever, says he, shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. He solemnly affirms that the man who shall give a cup of cold water only to one of his disciples, in the name of a disciple, shall in no wise lose his reward. He represents the issues of the final Judgment as depending on the treatment which he himself receives in the person of his disciples. When the righteous in their amaze ment inquire, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and min istered unto thee The King answers, Verily I say unto you, in as much as ye have done it unto one of the least Of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. When about to leave his disciples, and return to his Father, he enjoined it upon them to love one another, even as he had loved them. The apostles inculcate the same duty with great force and frequency. They Insist upon a special regard to them who are Of the household of faith. The beloved John even says, that we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren, and I take it that, in regard to this thing, the New Testament re cognizes no distinction Of name or sect, except what is implied in the terms, disciples, brethren, Christians. Here then I rest an argument for Home Missions. Christ has many humble followers dwelling in the desolate places of our Zion.
