Book Christian Lectures on Buddhism and plain facts by Buddhist

Download or read book Christian Lectures on Buddhism and plain facts by Buddhist written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2020-12-05 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France, Germany, and Italy are eaten to the core with free-thought and Atheism. Let us not talk of “pseudo-Buddhists” in the face of millions of “pseudo-Christians,” nominal and more “Grundy-fearing” than God-fearing. Sir Monier-Williams’s Oxford rival, Professor Max Müller, pronounces the moral code of Buddhism as one of the most perfect the world has ever known. The leading organ of Roman Catholic Englishmen admits that the Buddhists’ standard of morality is so high that “however much we Christianize them, we cannot succeed in making them altogether as bad as ourselves.” No better answer than this could a Buddhist find as a reply to the uncharitable and incorrect comparisons between the two creeds instituted by Sir Monier-Williams.

Book Sermons of a Buddhist Abbot

Download or read book Sermons of a Buddhist Abbot written by Sōen Shaku and published by . This book was released on 1906 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation First published in 1906, SERMONS OF A BUDDHIST ABBOT remains one of the best introductions to Buddhist thought for a Western audience. Presented with an incisive new foreword by one of today's foremost scholars of Buddhism and Japanese religion, it contains the lectures and articles of the Japanese Zen abbot Soyen Shaku, whose talks in the United States first popularized Buddhism. Foreshadowing the attitude and method of many contemporary teachers, Shaku advocates an approach to religious life that stresses personal understanding based on practice and experience, rather than the acceptance of received creeds and doctrines. His lucid explanations make use of Western religious, philosophic, and psychological references to clarify the ideas central to understanding of Mahayana Buddhism, which is the basis of all schools and denominations.

Book excerpt: Described as ‘unique and a great service to understanding’, this book is intended for three groups; Western Buddhists, that bulk of the West that have no religious affiliation yet know there is something more to life, and Buddhists in Asia who follow the encounter of the dharma with the West. It highlights the pervasive similarities in the teachings of Jesus and the Buddha as they were probably originally presented. In its six chapters and appendix, it compares the two great teachers, the Buddha and Jesus, briefly charts the process by which experts have produced words readily attributed to Jesus and presents a Buddhist ‘imitation’ of these words based on the hypothetical ‘Sayings of Jesus’. It then considers congruence between the Buddha’s and Jesus’ teachings before offering both Buddhist and Christian interpretations. An appendix re-presents the Buddhist imitation of Jesus’ words as a continuous text. Dr. Falvey introduces his work ... ‘Jesus speaking the Buddha’s words’ exudes audacity and ignorance, yet this work essentially wrote itself as a product of my socialization, a modicum of Christian theological study and its explication through three decades of casual association with Thai Buddhism. Differences between the two traditions – such as Christianity relying on a God while Buddhism denies the existence of a God proved themselves facile upon consideration of the metaphorical intent of teachings of both traditions.

Book Christians Talk about Buddhist Meditation Buddhists Talk About Christian Prayer

Download or read book Christians Talk about Buddhist Meditation Buddhists Talk About Christian Prayer written by Rita M. Gross and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2003-04-29 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book adopts the format of the editorsÆ previous book, Buddhists Talk about Jesus, Christians Talk about the Buddha. In that book eight scholar-practitioners--four of them Buddhist and four Christian--explored their relationship to the great religious figure of the other tradition. Then the remaining contributors, two from each tradition, addressed themselves, rebuttal fashion, to the views expressed. In the new book the subject is the differences and similarities between Buddhist meditation and Christian prayer. What can a Christian, for example, learn from the mental and physical rigor of Buddhist meditative practice? What can a Buddhist learn from traditional Christian prayer? Can one mix distinct religious identity (Christian) with practice techniques associated with another religion (Buddhist) without compromising the religious specificity of either the identities or the techniques? Christian contributors include Frances S. Adeney, Mary Frohlich, Paul O. Ingram, Ursula King, Terry C. Muck, Yagi Seiichi, and Bardwell Smith. Buddhist contributors include Robert Aitken, Grace Burford, Rita Gross, John Makransky, Ken Tanaka, Robert Thurman, and Taitetsu Unno.
