These several social organisms are to be regarded, on the one hand, as possessions, and hence as realized aims, in which man finds satisfaction, profit, pleasure; on the other, as moral individuals on a large scale, having each its special office to discharge. And I, the small individual, am to be a personal member of one and another of these social circles, to occupy with respect to them a relation at once of co-operation and appropriation, of toleration and devotion, while constantly aiming at my own perfection and the perfection of the whole. One essential side of man's destination is displayed in each of the social circles, and the purpose of Christianity is to develope the "new man" within each. It is in proportion as the Christian ideal of human nature is realized in them, that the kingdom of God attains a social, and at the same time an individual, appearance on earth. So, then, the whole essay is closed herewith, and experts will be able to prove what value may belong to the method here applied to the treatment of Ethics. But if the Special Part was to be connected with the General as a side-piece, there was needed a certain amplitude of statement and a form corresponding to the subjects handled. And from the whole design of this work, it will scarcely require an apology that parts occur in it of an edifying character, or at least bordering thereon. On the whole, it is to be remarked, however, that in the progress of a more ample statement, it is not always easy to hit the boundary between what the author has to express and what he can fitly leave to the reader to say to himself, a difficulty which makes itself felt more especially where so much is treated of that in a certain sense is known to all, although all do not therefore by any means rightly understand or have fully acknowledged it. Martensen, Bishop of Zealand, the present translation has been made directly from the original Danish, and not through the medium of the German edition. It is hoped that the author will thus have suffered less from the disguise of the terse and forcible style in which he expresses himself in his own tongue, than would have been possible if the book had passed through the ordeal of two different interpreters, more especially as the Danish language has far more affinity to English, in the structure of sentences, than to German. Philosophical terms, such as moment, have been left untranslated, both as being doubtless familiar to English students of this class of literature, and also because, if in a few instances this is not already the case, the context will generally bring out the meaning of such terms clearly enough, without interference with the author's choice of words. It is probably superfluous to remind the English reader, that whenever reference is made to the Decalogue, the division of its parts differs from that to which we are accustomed. Thus, "Honour thy father and thy mother" is spoken of as the fourth commandment, and the first table of the law is said to consist of three precepts. In the work of translation, great encouragement has been experienced from the lively interest manifested in its progress, not only by the venerable author himself, who most courteously supplied information on any point on which he was consulted, but also by many friends in this country, as Professor Calderwood, Dr. Lindsay Alexander, Dr. Macgregor.
