Book What is Christian Democracy

Download or read book What is Christian Democracy written by Carlo Invernizzi Accetti and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-03 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Democratic actors and thinkers have been at the forefront of many of the twentieth century's key political battles - from the construction of the international human rights regime, through the process of European integration and the creation of postwar welfare regimes, to Latin American development policies during the Cold War. Yet their core ideas remain largely unknown, especially in the English-speaking world. Combining conceptual and historical approaches, Carlo Invernizzi Accetti traces the development of this ideology in the thought and writings of some of its key intellectual and political exponents, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. In so doing he sheds light on a number of important contemporary issues, from the question of the appropriate place of religion in presumptively 'secular' liberal-democratic regimes, to the normative resources available for building a political response to the recent rise of far-right populism.

Book Christianity and Radical Democracy in the Philippines

Download or read book Christianity and Radical Democracy in the Philippines written by Christopher Moxham and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-18 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses faith-based development action in the Philippines by studying Catholic social movements and development studies in Southeast Asia. By drawing upon primary, qualitative data, this book examines cultural production and community resilience amid poverty and structural restraints. It also interrogates the discourse of Basic Ecclesial Communities, the smallest organizational unit of the Philippine Catholic Church, to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of the social movement. The author shows that the dream of local economic development and empowerment requires help from the Catholic hierarchy, particularly the organizational and leadership resources at the diocese level. This book is a unique contribution in opening up interdisciplinary approaches to religion, faith, and social development. It will be of interest to researchers on Asian Studies, especially Southeast Asian Studies, Development Studies, the Anthropology of Development, Social Movements, and the Anthropology of Christianity, Missiology, and Religious Studies.

Book Evangelical Christianity and Democracy in Asia

Download or read book Evangelical Christianity and Democracy in Asia written by David Halloran Lumsdaine and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-13 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a minority of the Asian population, Protestants in Asia are a fast-growing group. What are the political implications of this evangelical Christianity? In some cases, religion has enabled poor and marginalized people to gain greater prosperity, self-confidence and civic skills, and more open-minded and democratic societies. But does religion have the kind of cultural currency needed to generate political changes in governments such as China's? Evangelical Christianity and Democracy in Asia provides six case studies on China, Western India, Northeast India, Indonesia, South Korea, and the Philippines. The contributors, mainly younger scholars based in Asia, bring first hand-knowledge to their chapters. The result is a groundbreaking work, indispensable to everyone concerned with the future of the region. Evangelical Christianity and Democracy in Asia is one of four volumes in the series Evangelical Christianity and Democracy in the Global South and grew from a Pew-funded study that sought to answer the question: What happens when a revivalist religion based on scriptural orthodoxy participates in the volatile politics of the Third World? At a time when the global-political impact of another revivalist and scriptural religion - Islam - fuels debate, these volumes offer an unusual comparative perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When tyrants come to power and Christians remain silent, the church betrays its prophetic role in the public sphere. Far from withdrawing from social-political engagement, Christians must grow in boldness as they embody a just, righteous, and godly love for their country and its people. In this collection of essays, Filipino evangelical theologians challenge the church’s complacency in the face of oppressive regimes. Addressing the specific realities of President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration, they draw on biblical studies, political theology, and ethics to provide a biblical and theological framework for Christians seeking to resist injustice in both the Philippines and beyond. Faith and Bayan is an excellent resource for students and leaders seeking an Asian evangelical perspective on Christian political engagement. It not only offers intellectual insight on the topic, but empowers its readers to fulfill a prophetic calling — to uphold democracy, peace, and human dignity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A PEN FOR DEMOCRACY A decade of articles, speeches, letters, interviews, and committee testimony published in the international press and the U.S. Congressional Record in the tradition of the Filipino democrats a centuiy ago. Edited and with a foreword by Lilia Ramos-de Leon Washington Office Movement for a Free Philippines (MFP) + + + + PREFACE The first edition of this book is an exile one, having been published in Washington, D.C when Ferdinand Marcos still held on to power in the Philippines. When films of its pages were mailed for printing here in 1984, these were confiscated at the Sta. Mesa Post Office and held by the Postmaster General on the ground that they contain matter advocating or inciting treason, rebellion, insurrection or sedition against the Government of the Philippines." Ramon Tagle, then the secretary general of the Christian Social Democratic Party of the Philippines, to whom the materials were addressed, had to sue in court to secure the materials. This edition, the second, was printed in the Philippines after People Power toppled the dictator, enabling of Raul S. Manglapus to come home after fourteen long years. Manglapus never let the momentum of his fight against tyranny slacken, more so during those years when in the Philippines, the silence of apathy and fear prevailed. This book keeps track of his battling with pen and oratory. When President Corazon Aquino ran against Marcos in the snap polls, Manglapus expressed enthusiastic support for her in speeches and articles. Since the first edition closed with October of 1983, the year Benigno Aquino, Jr. was assassinated, this edition was put out to include those essays and speeches that came out in newspapers after the last piece in the previous publishing. Lilia Ramos-de Leon Manila, Philippines May 24, 1986 + + + Appendix J About Raul S. Manglapus + + + His bio-data tells of distinction and achievement in 1957, at the age of 38, he was the youngest Filipino ever to hold the office of Secretary of Foreign Affairs. In 1961, he topped the winning senatorial line-up; and in 1970, again as a top-notcher, he was elected delegate to the Constitutional Convention where he became leader of the Progressives. He was named Most Outstanding Young Man in the Government in 1955, and Outstanding Senator in 1963 and 1964. He was Secretary General of the first SEATO Conference (1954) and a delegate to the Bandung Conference (1955). From 1968 to the present, he has been the president of the Christian Social Movement Since 1979 he has been president of the Democracy International, based in Washington, D.C., and since 1982 vice-president of the Christian Democratic International based in Rome. When he had barely started his career, he preferred imprisonment and torture in Fort Santiago to collaboration with the enemy; and when he escaped, he joined the freedom-fighters in the mountains. His choice of endeavors in his years of exile have been clearly influenced by idealism. In 1973, he founded and became the president of the Movement for a Free Philippines. He taught as a visiting professor and Senior Reasearch Associate in Cornell University, N.Y. (1973-74), served as Senior Associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (1974-75) and as Adjunct Professor of International Relations at the American University in Washington, D.C. (1976-80). At present, he is the president of the Center for Development Policy in Washington. D.C.
