Excerpt: Christchurch is a borough and town in the county of Dorset on the south coast of England. The town adjoins Bournemouth in the west and the New Forest lies to the east. Historically in Hampshire, it joined Dorset with the reorganisation of local government in 1974 and is the most easterly borough in the county. It covers an area of 19.5 square miles (51 km) and has a population of approximately 45,000, making it the fourth most populous town in the county. Christchurch was founded in the 7th century at the confluence of the rivers Avon and Stour which flow into Christchurch Harbour. The town was originally named Twynham but became known as Christchurch following the construction of the priory in 1094. The town developed into an important trading port and was fortified in the 9th century. Further defences were added in the 12th century with the construction of a castle which was destroyed by the Parliamentarian army during the English Civil War. During the 18th and 19th centuries smuggling flourished in Christchurch and became one of the town's most lucrative industries. The town was heavily fortified during Second World War as a precaution against an expected invasion and in 1940 an Airspeed factory was established on the town's airfield which manufactured aircraft for the Royal Air Force. Book excerpt: Christchurch is surrounded by large wide marshes at the confluence of the Stour and the Avon. This strategic position gave Christchurch its former name Tweoxneam ... 'the town between the rivers'. Its harbour was sheltered by nearby Hengistbury Head, a defensible site in more turbulent days, as well as an excellent look-out point. Its skyline is dominated by the Priory, which was famous in the Middle Ages for its relics and attracted many pilgrims. After the Reformation and, a century later, the Civil War, Christchurch fell into decline and became a small fishing town.

Book excerpt: The America's Cup has always been a hotbed of unbridled ambition, personal agendas, intrigue, spying and, more recently, hardfought court cases – and that's before the boats even get out on the water to race. Exposed: The Dark Side of the America's Cup lifts the lid on this unique contest for the oldest trophy in sport and on the powerful men who have made it 'the toughest game in town'. For some it has been the key to social advancement, for others it has opened important doors in the business and commercial world, and in some cases it has become a magnificent obsession. It is the pinnacle of achievement in a sport that was once the domain of the wealthy but which today has become fertile territory for a new breed of super-wealthy owners and sailing professionals who would change the event forever. Exposed is a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of one of the most compelling and controversial contests in the whole of sport.

Book Monasteries and Society in the British Isles in the Later Middle Ages

Download or read book Monasteries and Society in the British Isles in the Later Middle Ages written by Andrew Abram and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2008 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been an increasing interest in the history of the numerous houses of monks, canons and nuns which existed in the medieval British Isles, considering them in their wider socio-cultural-economic context; historians are now questioning some of the older assumptions about monastic life in the later Middle Ages, and setting new approaches and new agenda. The present volume reflects these new trends. Its fifteen chapters assess diverse aspects of monastic history, focusing on the wide range of contacts which existed between religious communities and the laity in the later medieval British Isles, covering a range of different religious orders and houses. This period has often been considered to represent a general decline of the regular life; but on the contrary, the essays here demonstrate that there remained a rich monastic culture which, although different from that of earlier centuries, remained vibrant.
