Book On Signs Christ Truth and the Interpretation of Scripture

Download or read book On Signs Christ Truth and the Interpretation of Scripture written by Susannah Ticciati and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susannah Ticciati draws on Augustine to address the question of truth in the public sphere. In the face of the degeneration of public normative discourse, the book finds in Augustine the resources for the repair of a series of (post)modern oppositions, making way for a rehabilitation of public normativity. The book discovers in Augustine a truth that is at once inward and public. It is a truth which both scriptural author and interpreter, prompted by the words of Scripture, seek in common. It is a truth which Christ speaks on behalf of others, and which others in turn are liberated to speak in Christ. Through Augustine, Ticciati offers a scriptural hermeneutic that overcomes a false opposition between modern and postmodern modes of reading, and arrives at a Christologically informed vision of coinherence rather than inclusion, of substitutionary rather than tokenist representation, and of cosmic rather than colonial breadth.

Download or read book Jesus and the Last Days written by George R. Beasley-Murray and published by Regent College Pub. This book was released on 2005 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone wrestling with Jesus' understanding of the last days must begin by braving the tempest of controversy surrounding the interpretation of Mark 13-a passage on which it seems virtually every NT scholar of the last century has felt compelled to comment. From Strauss to Schniewind, Perrin to Drewermann, rabbit trails to roadways, Beasley-Murray charts the complex and sometimes confusing paths of interpretation. Obviously, any interpreter wishing to begin at ground-zero must take seriously the forces that have shaped the modern understanding of Jesus' words concerning the End. This study culminates nearly 40 years of research, for Beasley-Murray's passion for Mark 13 began in 1954 with the release of Jesus and the Future; the present volume is a completely revised and expanded edition of the former work, whose longevity as a centerpiece in discussions on Mark 13 warranted its revision and expansion.

Book The Farewell Discourses in Practice

Download or read book The Farewell Discourses in Practice written by John Vincent and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practice Interpretation takes the everyday social conditions of people as they are described in the Bible and looks at emerging issues that confront today’s interpreters in daily life. This volume in the Practice Interpretation series deals with the Farewell Discourses of Jesus in the Gospel of John. The key element and dynamic in the Johannine practice reflections in this volume is that John’s Gospel sometimes explicitly, often implicitly, setsforth a continuing Jesus-style practice by Jesus’ followers, in the gospel time, in the longer term behaviour of early Christian communities, and incontemporary Christian disciples and communities today. Each contributor indicates this at work in very different contexts and happenings. The contributors are: Leslie Francis, David Blatherwick, Sarah Pullin, David McLoughlin, Ian Wallis, Nirmal Fernando, John Vincent and Alan Saxby.

Book The Questions of Jesus in John

Download or read book The Questions of Jesus in John written by Douglas Charles Estes and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-10-19 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do the New Testament gospels depict a Jesus who asks questions almost as often as he gives answers? In The Questions of Jesus in John Douglas Estes crafts a highly interdisciplinary theory of question-asking based on insights from ancient rhetoric and modern erotetics (the study of interrogatives) in order to investigate the logical and rhetorical purposes of Jesus' questions in the Gospel of John. While scholarly discussion about Jesus cares more for what he says, and not what he asks, Estes argues a better understanding of the rhetorical and dialectical roles of questions in ancient narratives sheds a more accurate light on both John’s narrative art and Jesus' message in the Fourth Gospel.

Book Reading the Word of God in the Presence of God

Download or read book Reading the Word of God in the Presence of God written by Vern S. Poythress and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical interpretation is typically viewed as concerned with understanding the human author’s intended meaning. However, for Christians, the Bible is first and foremost God’s Word and must be understood in that light. Helping Christians approach the Bible with God in mind, this book sets forth a more nuanced approach to biblical interpretation that pays attention to both the human and divine origins of these sacred texts. Whether it’s reviewing the three basic steps of interpretation or emphasizing the importance of paying attention to the Christ-centered character of both the Old and New Testaments, this book is a much-needed resource for the church as it wrestles to defend the authority of Scripture in our increasingly relativistic world.

Book Imprecation as Divine Discourse

Download or read book Imprecation as Divine Discourse written by Kit Barker and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian readers of the Hebrew Bible are often faced with a troubling tension. On the one hand, they are convinced that this ancient text is relevant today, yet on the other, they remain perplexed at how this can be so, particularly when parts of it appear to condone violence. Barker’s volume seeks to address this tension in two parts: (1) by defending a particular form of theological interpretation and (2) by applying this interpretive method to the imprecatory psalms. Barker suggests that the goal of theological interpretation is to discover God’s voice in the text. While he recognizes that this goal could encourage a subjective methodology, Barker offers a hermeneutic that clearly locates God’s voice in the text of Scripture. Utilizing the resources of speech act theory, Barker notes that texts convey meaning at a number of literary levels and that God’s appropriation of speech acts at these levels is not necessarily uniform for each genre. He also discusses how the Christian canon alters the context of these ancient speech acts, both reshaping and enabling their continued function as divine discourse. In order to demonstrate the usefulness of this hermeneutic, Barker offers theological interpretations of Psalms 69 and 137. He demonstrates how christological fulfilment and the call to forgive one’s enemies are determinative for a theological interpretation of these troubling psalms, concluding that they continue to form an essential part of God’s voice that must not be ignored.

His emphasis on the use of John within first-century Christianity enables modern readers to grasp the meaning of the Gospel message. Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching is a distinctive resource for those who interpret the Bible in the church. Planned and written specifically for teaching and preaching needs, this critically acclaimed biblical commentary is a major contribution to scholarship and ministry.
