Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first study to focus on the reception of Paul's link between resurrection and salvation, revealing its profound effect on early Christian theology - not only eschatology, but also anthropology, pneumatology, ethics, and soteriology. Thomas D. McGlothlin traces the roots of the strong tension on the matter in ancient Judaism and then offers deep readings of the topic by key theologians of pre-Nicene Christianity, who argued on both sides of the issue of the fleshliness of the resurrected body. McGlothlin unravels the surprising continuities that emerge between Irenaeus, Origen, and the Valentinians, as well as deep disagreements between allies like Irenaeus and Tertullian.

Book The Resurrection Effect Transforming Christian Life and Thought

Download or read book The Resurrection Effect Transforming Christian Life and Thought written by Kelly, Anthony J. and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2014-04-10 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What difference should the resurrection of the crucified Jesus make to Christian thought, to our sense of the cosmos, and our understanding of humanity itself? Despite the centrality of the resurrection in the New Testament and the Creed, the practical answer of many Christians might be: not much. In this light, Anthony Kelly sets out to affirm the resurrection as the living center of Christian life and the basis for its theological methods and themes. Without the resurrection, he writes, ""hope would be a repressive optimism, or an accommodation to routine despair."" Acknowledging that the resurrection, like a work of art, eludes any single point of view, Kelly shows why it remains the key to Gods relationship to Jesus and ourselves, the most critical horizon from which to grasp the meaning and pattern of life, and the basis of our ultimate hopes.

Father Osborne makes a thorough examination of all the biblical texts dealing with the Resurrection and then traces the church's doctrinal statements and teachings to identify the different levels of authority that are claimed for each. The result is a clear presentation of the major Christological developments pertaining to Jesus' Resurrection that have taken place in the twentieth century. Father Osborne has produced a pioneering study that integrates the threefold dimension of Christ's life, death, and rising from the dead into a comprehensive and balanced theology of the Resurrection. Book The Impact of Bodily Experience on Paul s Resurrection Theology

Download or read book The Impact of Bodily Experience on Paul s Resurrection Theology written by Kai-Hsuan Chang and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-23 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kai-Hsuan Chang engages with the longstanding scholarly debate concerning the development of Paul's resurrection theology, by investigating the correlation between his bodily experiences and his diverse articulations about resurrection. Drawing on insights from cognitive linguistics, Chang considers Paul's ideas about resurrection as fundamentally grounded in recurrent patterns of bodily experience, arguing that such experience of some religious activities in Paul's time-death rites, spirit possession, and baptism-contributed to the formation and development of his resurrection theology. Chang demonstrates that developments in Paul's ideas about “bodily transformation at resurrection” - reflected in 1 Corinthians 15 - resulted from a change in the experiential patterns on which his new idea is constructed, rather than “transformation during heavenly ascent” as seen in Jewish traditions of resurrection. He thus applies cognitive linguistic tools to two considerations; first, whether Paul had contextual reasons to generate his innovation in 1 Corinthians 15, and second, whether Paul's innovation recurred or had continual effects in Christian groups. In so doing, Chang shows that Paul's innovation directly addressed a contextual issue of death rites in Corinth and exerted a continuing effect on Paul's later ideas of transformation, spirit possession, and baptism.

Book The Centrality of the Resurrection

Download or read book The Centrality of the Resurrection written by Richard B. Gaffin and published by Baker Publishing Group (MI). This book was released on 1978-01-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What place does the resurrection of Jesus Christ have in the soteriological teaching of the apostle Paul? The author, writing from within the Reformed tradition, explains in part one that a change has taken place in Reformed theology's interpretation of the emphasis of Paul's thought. Gaffin discusses this change and the proper way to approach Paul. Part two uncovers the basic structure of Paul's resurrection theology and shows that the central theme of Christ's resurrection governs the whole of Paul's theology. Part three discusses the way in which Paul develops and uses this theme. Gaffin's conclusion presents the implications of this study for the problems and program of Reformed dogmatics. - Back cover.
