Book excerpt: The provocative and authoritative history of the origins of Christian America in the New Deal era We're often told that the United States is, was, and always has been a Christian nation. But in One Nation Under God, historian Kevin M. Kruse reveals that the belief that America is fundamentally and formally Christian originated in the 1930s. To fight the "slavery" of FDR's New Deal, businessmen enlisted religious activists in a campaign for "freedom under God" that culminated in the election of their ally Dwight Eisenhower in 1952. The new president revolutionized the role of religion in American politics. He inaugurated new traditions like the National Prayer Breakfast, as Congress added the phrase "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance and made "In God We Trust" the country's first official motto. Church membership soon soared to an all-time high of 69 percent. Americans across the religious and political spectrum agreed that their country was "one nation under God." Provocative and authoritative, One Nation Under God reveals how an unholy alliance of money, religion, and politics created a false origin story that continues to define and divide American politics to this day.

Book Not a Fan Updated and Expanded

Download or read book Not a Fan Updated and Expanded written by Kyle Idleman and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not a Fan has already called more than one million readers to consider the demands and rewards of being a true disciple--moving from fan to follower in their relationship with Jesus. After years of serving God, pastor and bestselling author Kyle Idleman had a startling revelation: for too long, he had been living as a fan of Jesus; someone who tried to make Christianity seem as appealing, comfortable, and convenient as he possibly could to others. Idleman decided something had to change--he needed to embark on the journey of becoming a completely committed follower of God, not just a fan. Fans want to be close enough to Jesus to get all the benefits, but not so close that it requires sacrifice, while followers are all in and completely committed to Christ. Not a Fan gives you the tools you need to determine exactly where you stand when it comes to your relationship with Jesus. No matter where you are in your walk with Christ, Not a Fan calls you to consider the demands and rewards of being a true disciple. With frankness and a touch of humor, Idleman invites you to: Examine your relationship with God Determine if you're following Jesus or just following the rules Pray the way Jesus prayed Start truly living for the one who gave his all for you This expanded and updated version of Not a Fan also includes a new introduction and an entirely new chapter about how to practically live out the book's core message. Join Idleman as he challenges you to take an honest look at your relationship with Jesus and discover what it really means to be a follower.

Download or read book Honorable in Business written by Annetta Gibson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can one be a Christian in the world of business, not just on the weekend? How can one be honorable in business? Through the integration of the Christian worldview and business ethics, this book provides Christians with a mental framework with which to answer these important questions. Beginning with Genesis as the foundation for the Christian's worldview and the Ten Commandments as the outline for the Christian's ethical obligations, the authors develop principles upon which ethical choices can be made, even when working in a primarily non-Christian-oriented business environment. The book is designed to be helpful both to those beginning their career in business and those already employed in business who struggle with how to engage in today's business environment while maintaining their commitment to God's vision for life to be both meaningful and honorable. Topics of business ethics such as employee rights, discrimination, technology and privacy, insider trading and accounting fraud, and the special challenges of working internationally are covered. The added value this book brings to these discussions lies in its serious consideration of the Christian worldview as foundational to ethical decision-making in everyday areas of business.

Download or read book Christians on the Job written by David Goetsch and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Matthew 10:16, Christ advised His Apostles to be "wise" and "innocent" as they go out "in the midst of wolves." This book shows Christians how to be wise and innocent as they work among people who sometimes behave like wolves. Temptation, greed, dishonesty, and misguided ambition have always presented challenges for Christians in the workplace. Add secular bias, political correctness, and persecution to the mix, and the modern workplace becomes a foreboding environment for Christians to navigate. This is so much the case, many Christians wonder if it is still possible to earn a living without compromising their faith. Christians on the Job does more than demonstrate that Christians can stand firm when confronted with faith-related dilemmas in the workplace. It also demonstrates how to go about it. Using concepts illustrated with real-life examples, steps to implement in specific situations, life application questions, and resources for going deeper, Dr. Goetsch draws a clear map to ensure Christians can find their way and thrive on the job.

Book A Christian Approach to Corporate Religious Liberty

Download or read book A Christian Approach to Corporate Religious Liberty written by Edward A. David and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses one of the most urgent issues in contemporary American law—namely, the logic and limits of extending free exercise rights to corporate entities. Pointing to the polarization that surrounds disputes like Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, David argues that such cases need not involve pitting flesh-and-blood individuals against the rights of so-called “corporate moral persons.” Instead, David proposes that such disputes should be resolved by attending to the moral quality of group actions. This approach shifts attention away from polarizing rights-talk and towards the virtues required for thriving civic communities. More radically, however, this approach suggests that groups themselves should not be viewed as things or “persons” in the first instance, but rather as occasions of coordinated activity. Discerned in the writings of Saint Thomas Aquinas, this reconceptualization helps illuminate the moral stakes of a novel—and controversial—form of religious freedom.

Book The Pursuit of God in the Company of Friends

Download or read book The Pursuit of God in the Company of Friends written by Richard C. Lamb, Jr. and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2010-03-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You were not meant to walk alone. Many of us struggle to forge deep relationships with God and other people. Modern society has isolated us as rugged individuals, deceiving us into thinking we can make it through life on our own. Individualism has likewise shaped the pattern of Christian discipleship, privatizing faith and separating us from fellow believers. But we come to know God best when others help us on the way. And our friendships develop best when we seek after God together. What would it look like to pursue God not by ourselves but in the company of friends? According to the model of the New Testament, spiritual transformation takes place in the context of Christian community. By unpacking the Gospel narratives of Jesus' ministry with his disciples, Richard Lamb demonstrates how discipleship develops within the shared community life of groups of Christians. He explores a range of topics--such as spiritual friendship, hospitality, leadership, service, conflict, forgiveness and mission--in light of Christian community. Engaging stories from real-life experience show how people can form one another spiritually when their lives are tumbled against one another. If you long for more of God, deeper friendships or both, this book will help you on the journey. Discover the transforming power of discipleship in community. Join the pursuit of God in the company of friends.

Book Our Father s Business

Download or read book Our Father s Business written by Tina Williams-Koroma and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subtitle of this book is "Pick up the Mission, Then Drop the Mic." This book walks you through the life of Christ with a primary focus on the book of Luke in the Bible. It provides wisdom from Jesus' life as He lived out Our Father's business. Although this book is divided by topic, it largely maintains the chronology of events as they are captured in the book of Luke. The inspiration for this book came as result of many personal experiences. Being about our Father's business is bigger than any title in life. Professionally, I am an entrepreneur, an adjunct instructor, an attorney, a board director and officer, and many other titles. Personally, I am a wife, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a poet, an athlete. We all have many titles, but above all of these, there is a business, a mission, we have each been assigned to carry out. This book is written to remind and encourage you and me to "pick up the mission, then drop the mic." Picking up the mission refers to "bear[ing] [your] cross, and com[ing] after [Christ]." Dropping the mic refers to when a speaker or artist is on a stage, and says something so profound and final, leaving nothing else to be said afterwards. This is how our lives should be lived "" with such profundity that when our time on this earth is over, we can say, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith," our physical death being our "drop the mic" moment. The specific challenges we face in deciding to answer God's call on our lives will be different for each of us. Some of the most difficult decisions will be choices between good (our plans) and best (God's plans for us). It is my prayer that you read this book and "pick up the mission" so that at the end of your life, you can "then drop the mic!" Click here to access the author's website!
