This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clock of the Passion 4 Invocation of Jesus and Mary 6 Fruits of Meditation on the Passion of Jesus Christ 9 Chapter I 18 Chapter II 30 Chapter III 42 Chapter IV 50 Chapter V 59 Chapter VI 73 Chapter VII 83 Chapter VIII 97 Chapter IX 111 Chapter X 119 Chapter XI 127 Chapter XII 140 Chapter XIII 154 Chapter XIV 168 Chapter XV 185 Chapter XVI 195 FRUITS OF MEDITATION ON THE PASSION OF JESUS CHRIST. 1. The Lover of souls, our most loving Redeemer, declared that He had no other motive in coming down upon earth to become man, than to enkindle in the hearts of men the fire of His holy love: "I am come to cast fire on earth; and what will I but that it be kindled" (St. Luke 12:49). And oh, what beautiful flames of love has He not enkindled in so many souls, especially by the pains that He chose to suffer in His death, in order to prove to us the immeasurable love which He still bears to us! Oh, how many souls, happy in the Wounds of Jesus, as in burning furnaces of love, have been so inflamed with His love, that they have not refused to consecrate to Him their goods, their lives and their whole selves, surmounting with great courage all the difficulties which they had to encounter in the observance of the Divine law, for the love of that Lord who, being God, chose to suffer so much for the love of them! This was just the counsel that the Apostle gave us, in order that we might not fail, but make great advances in the way of salvation: "Think diligently upon Him who endureth such opposition from sinners against Himself, that you be not wearied, fainting in your minds" (Heb. 12:3). 2. Wherefore St. Augustine, all inflamed with love at the sight of Jesus nailed on the Cross, prayed thus sweetly: Imprint, O Lord, Thy Wounds in my heart, that I may read therein suffering and love: suffering, that I may endure for Thee all suffering; love, that I may despise for Thee all love. Write, he said, my most loving Saviour, write on my heart Thy Wounds, in order that I may always therein behold Thy sufferings and Thy love. Yes, because, having before my eyes the great sufferings that Thou, my God, didst endure for me, I may bear in silence all the sufferings it may fall to my lot to endure; and at the sight of the love which Thou didst exhibit for me on the Cross, I may never love or be able to love any other than Thee. 3. And from what source did the saints draw courage and strength to suffer torments, martyrdom and death, if not from the sufferings of Jesus crucified? St. Joseph of Leonessa, a Capuchin, on seeing that they were going to bind him with cords for a painful incision that the surgeon was to make in his body, took into his hands his crucifix and said, 'Why these cords? Why these cords? Behold, these are my chains - my Saviour nailed to the Cross for love of me. He through His sufferings constrains me to bear every trial for His sake.' And thus he suffered the amputation without a complaint; looking upon Jesus, who, "as a lamb before his shearers, was dumb and did not open His mouth" (Isaias 53:7). Who, then, can ever complain that he suffers wrongfully, when he considers Jesus, who was "bruised for our sins"? (Is. 53:5.) Who can refuse to obey, on account of some inconvenience, when Jesus "became obedient unto death"? (Phil. 2:8.) Who can refuse ignominies, when they behold Jesus treated as a fool, as a mock king, as a disorderly person; struck, spit upon on His face and suspended upon an infamous gibbet?

Book excerpt: Christians know that God loves them, but can easily feel that he is perpetually disappointed and frustrated, maybe even close to giving up on them. As a result, they focus a lot—and rightly so—on what Jesus has done to appease God’s wrath for sin. But how does Jesus Christ actually feel about his people amid all their sins and failures? This book draws us to Matthew 11, where Jesus describes himself as “gentle and lowly in heart,” longing for his people to find rest in him. The gospel flows from God’s deepest heart for his people, a heart of tender love for the sinful and suffering. These chapters take readers into the depths of Christ’s very heart for sinners, diving deep into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encouraging readers with the affections of Christ for his people. His longing heart for sinners comforts and sustains readers in their up-and-down lives.

Book The Vicarious Sacrificial Atoning Death of Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Vicarious Sacrificial Atoning Death of Jesus Christ written by Steven Scherrer and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christians seek the meaning behind the death of Jesus Christ. In The Vicarious, Sacrificial, Atoning Death of Jesus Christ, author Fr. Steven Scherrer explores the impact of Jesus crucifixion and the benefits that we receive from his death. This collection of Biblical essays, garnered from sermon messages, looks at the mystery of the crucifixion from a variety of scripturally based points of view. These essays reflect on many aspects: [How Christs death establishes, upholds, and fulfills Gods law [How Christs death differs from that of all the martyrs [How profoundly Christ suffered [How Christ suffered the just punishment due to our sins [How Christs death ransoms us from death The Vicarious, Sacrificial, Atoning Death of Jesus Christ seeks to integrate Jesus atoning death into a personalistic understanding of the Trinity and explore its benefits to us. It comes as an affirmation of the New Testament doctrine that Jesus death was both vicarious and sacrificial, and that it saves those who believe in him from their sins, justifying, and making them into a new creation, resplendent in Gods sight.

Book The Passion and the Death of Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Passion and the Death of Jesus Christ written by St. Alphonsus De Ligouri and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Two things,” say Cicero, “make us know a lover-that he does good to his beloved, and that he suffers torment for him; and this last is the greatest sign of true love.” God has indeed already shown His love to men by many benefits bestowed upon him; but His love would not have been satisfied by only doing good to man, as says St. Peter Chrysologus, if He had not found the means to prove to him how much He loved him by also suffering and dying for him, as He did by taking upon Him human flesh. Saint Alphonsus says also of Jesus: “That is the hour of the lvoer, in which he suffers for the object beloved: because suffering for the beloved is the most fit way of discovering the lvoe of the lover, and of captivating to ourself the love of the beloved.” We are beloved by God and He showed this through His holy Passion! Further on we read: “St. Denis, the Areogapite, says that love always tends toward union with the object beloved. And because food becomes one thing with him who eats it, therefore our Lord would reduce Himself to food, in order that, receiving Him in Holy Communion, we might become of one substance with Him.” This work contains meditations on the Passion for each day of the week and for the last fifteen days of Lent. Much time is devoted to a consideration of the various events of the Passion and drawing wonderful resolutions from them. Saint Alphonsus quotes Saint Thomas Aquinas as says: “Devotion consists in being read to accomplish in ourselves whatever God demands of us.” And we also read: “Yes, Lord, all grown-up persons who are saved must either be martyrs in blood or martyrs in patience, in conquering the assaults of hell and the inordinate desires of the flesh. Bodily pleasures send enumerable souls to hell, and, therefore, we must resolve with courage to despise them. Let us be assured that either the soul must tread the body under foot, or the body the soul.” Saint Alphonsus quotes Saint Teresa as saying: “He who drags the cross along with ill-will feels its weight, however small it is; but he who willingly embraces it, however great it is, does not feel it.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Christ Died for Our Sins, Jarvis J. Williams argues a twofold thesis: First, that Paul in Romans presents Jesus' death as both a representation of, and a substitute for, Jews and Gentiles. Second, that the Jewish martyrological narratives in certain Second Temple Jewish texts are a background behind Paul's presentation of Jesus' death. By means of careful textual analysis, Williams argues that the Jewish martyrological narratives appropriated and applied Levitical cultic language and Isaianic languageto the deaths of the Torah-observant Jewish martyrs in order to present their deaths as a representation, a substitution, and as Israel's Yom Kippur for non-Torah-observant Jews. Williams seeks to show that Paul appropriated and applied this same language and conceptuality in order to present Jesus' death as the death of a Torah-observant Jew serving as a representation, a substitution, and as the Yom Kippur for both Jews and Gentiles. Scholars working in the areas of Romans, Pauline theology, Second Temple Judaism, atonement in Paul, or early Christian origins will find much to stimulate and provoke in these pages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schleiermacher’s preaching constituted a substantive part of his academic and pastoral life, and provides a foray into his thought that is both accessible and inspiring. In the form of the sermon, we discover Schleiermacher’s theology at work in the context of the worship life of the community—especially important for this progenitor of liberal theology. Schleiermacher’s Passion sermons are especially interesting, given that contemporary interpreters of his thought generally assume that his interest in the cross is attenuated, at best. Yet, in these sermons we discover him thinking through his theology of community, atonement, history, creation, and Scripture in the face of the death of the Redeemer. The sermon, in sum, is the principal means by which the God-consciousness of the Redeemer is communicated to the community to the end that we come to believe in the One who died for the sake of the world. Jesus’ Life in Dying contains nine sermons preached on the topic of the cross and suffering of Jesus, as well as an extended introduction by the editors, locating these pastoral labors within Schleiermacher’s larger theological project.

Book Dying and Rising with Christ

Download or read book Dying and Rising with Christ written by Robert C. Tannehill and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-10-10 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Part I Tannehill presents a thorough exegetical analysis of Rom 6, 7:1-6; Gal 2:19-20, 5:24-25, 6:14-15; II Cor 5:14-17; and of the baptismal passages in Colossians and Ephesians. . . . In Part II Tannehill discusses those text which employ the motif in the interpretation of the present Christian existence. In this context, the motif is related to ethical action, to suffering, and to 'transformation.' . . . The exegesis of the texts leads to two main observations. It is Paul's eschatology which provides the key to understanding the relation between dying with Christ as a past even and as a present experience of the Christian believer. Furthermore, 'Although rising with Christ is a necessary part of the motif of dying and rising with Christ, it is not the apect which gives this motif its importance for Paul. . . . It is when Paul wishes to bring out the participation of the believer in Christ's 'death' that this motif has a special function in his thought' (pp. 130f.). . . . I want to underline that the author has presented us with a piece of solid scholarship which must especially be appreciated because so little of this type of exegtical analysis of Pauline texts is available in the English language. --Hans Dieter Betz 'Journal of Biblical Literature' Robert C. Tannehill is Professor of New Testament Emeritusat Methodist Theological School in Ohio. He is also the author of 'The Sword of His Mouth, 'The Shape of Luke's Story, ' and the forthcoming 'The Shape of the Gospel.'

Book Christ Crucified

  • Author : Klaas Schilder
  • Publisher : Sovereign Grace Publishers,
  • Release : 2001-11
  • ISBN : 1589602552
  • Pages : 560 pages

Download or read book Christ Crucified written by Klaas Schilder and published by Sovereign Grace Publishers,. This book was released on 2001-11 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These superb works are without equal in modern literature. Schilder ''brings the reader into touch with the spiritual and temporal forces which converged during the Passion Week. He is careful to keep Christ central, and he blends in a masterful way this culmination of our Lord's earthly life with historical facts and psychological realities'' (Cyril Barber, The Minister's Library). Schilder was a noted Dutch scholar of the early twentieth century. The three volumes of this work were translated by Henry Zylstra. They first appeared in 1937. The three volumes cover three aspects of the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus Christ. They are entitled: Christ Crucified, Christ in His Suffering, and, Christ On Trial. In The Minister's Library, Cyril Barber states: ''Theologically accurate, abounds in suggestive insights, and provides exegetical illumination for a score of Easter sermons. It is a classic treatment on the passion of Christ. [It} deserves a place in every pastor's library. [The three volumes} cover the night of His betrayal to His condemnation . . . [it is] a learned, accurate treatment.'' That says a lot about this unique, very important work. It is simply indispensable to the understanding and feeling of the power of the passion of Christ. To put it into the words of the Apostle Paul, all should feel as he did, ''[Oh that I might] ''be found in Him . . . to know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, having been conformed to His death, if somehow I may attain to a resurrection out of the dead'' (Philippians 3:9-11). Through the guidance and inspiration of God the Holy Spirit Schilder has captured the drama and the pathos of Christ's ordeal, and yet also passes on to the reader the triumph and the exultation of Christ as He completes His voluntary submission to the Father's will: ''Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but You prepared a body for Me. You did not delight in burnt offering and sacrifices concerning sins. Then I said, Lo, I come in the heading of the Book it was written concerning Me, to do Your will, O God'' (Psalm 39:6-9; Heb. 10:5-7). No child of God is completely mature until he or she has gone to Gethsemane and followed the trail of Christ as He approached the hour when He must endure unspeakable humiliation, pain, and the suffering of momentary loss of the Father's presence with Him. It is no wonder that He sweat blood at the prospect, for He was not ignorant of what He must go through in order to provide salvation for His sheep: ''The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep'' (John 10:11). No one will better draw you down to the depths of this drama, a scene which only one Person could have endured, than Schilder. You will not be the same after you have followed Christ through these stirring looks that Schilder gives you - you will be a better Christian, by far. This is a Best Set in Print. Schilder was a man of many gifts, without any doubt. Anyone who has read his writings, even some of them, will readily acknowledge that he possessed the ability to look at various theological questions in different ways and to express his ideas in sometimes eloquent ways which were often fresh and new. 560 pages, blue hard cover

Download or read book Not Ashamed of the Gospel written by Morna D. Hooker and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-10-08 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convinced that Christ's crucifixion cannot be interpreted in isolation from his resurrection, Morna Hooker here gives a comprehensive and inspiring survey of the New Testament's teaching about the death of Christ. By looking closely at the great variety of images and metaphors employed in the writings of Paul and in Mark, Matthew, Luke-Acts, John, Hebrews, 1 Peter, 1 John, and Revelation, Hooker discusses the different ways in which the authors of the New Testament searched for, and then discovered, meaning in the death and resurrection of Christ. Hooker shows that the concept of substitutionary atonement does not take us far enough in understanding the profound truth, taught especially by Paul, that Christ became what we are in order that we might become what he is. He took his place as one of us and died our death in order that we might be identified with him both in his death and in his resurrection. She also demonstrates in meaningful new ways that the message of the cross - the message that lies at the heart of the gospel - is as relevant, and as disturbing, to the present generation as it was to its first hearers. Provocative, at times even controversial, this volume will be highly stimulating to readers who are prepared to take a fresh look at the New Testament evidence.

Book The Passion and Death of Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Passion and Death of Jesus Christ written by Liguori and published by . This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Alphonsus Liguori, the Prince of Moral Theologians, asks, "from what source did the saints draw courage and strength to suffer torments, martyrdom, and death, if not from the sufferings of Jesus crucified?" His answer: the passion and death of Jesus Christ. In The Passion and Death of Jesus Christ, St. Alphonsus asks the most important questions Catholics can ask themselves in prayer, especially when we encounter suffering. Who can ever complain that he suffers wrongly when he considers Jesus, who was bruised for our sins? Who could love any other object besides Jesus when they see Him dying in the midst of so many sufferings and insults, in order to captivate our love? Who can refuse to obey, on account of some inconvenience, when Jesus became obedient unto death? Saint Alphonsus provides profound and rich reflections, affections, discourses, and meditations on the events surrounding Our Lord's passion and death. He brings these to the everyday struggles and sufferings of even the modern reader. As Catholics, we strive to see the world the way that God sees the world. He makes real the events surrounding the ultimate event that brought about our eternal salvation. Saint Alphonsus states, "All the saints cherished a tender devotion towards Jesus Christ in his Passion; this is the only means by which they sanctified themselves." If we want to be saints, we must embrace the cross, and we can understand better what this means through the guidance and wisdom in this book.

Book Christ the Suffering Servant

  • Author : Douglas Wirth
  • Publisher : Winepress Publishing
  • Release : 2013-03
  • ISBN : 9781414123615
  • Pages : 80 pages

Download or read book Christ the Suffering Servant written by Douglas Wirth and published by Winepress Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his three years of itinerant ministry, Jesus is unstoppable: no human, natural, or demonic force can stand against his will. But from the moment of his arrest in Gethsemane, Jesus seems like a pawn in the hands of his adversaries. He falls virtually silent as they parade him through Jewish and Roman trials, crowds who call for his crucifixion and Roman soldiers who taunt and beat him. His non-resistance to the insults and injustices perpetrated against him seems inexplicable, even to his closest companions. After his resurrection, his disciples would recognize him as the Suffering Servant -"He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth" (Isaiah 53:7a). The Passion Narratives in the four gospels, written from the perspective of Jesus' fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies such as those in Isaiah, provide us a picture of the Suffering Servant. "Servant songs" chronicle the task prepared for the coming Messiah: To suffer punishment for the iniquities of others To give his life as a ransom for many The Suffering Servant prophecies are key to making sense of how Jesus viewed the events of Passion Week. They provide insight and understanding as to how the gospel writers portray the atoning death of Christ. Christ the Suffering Servant, a six-week Bible study/devotional, will help you prepare your heart and mind for the mystery and meaning of Christ's sacrifice. Doug Wirth holds teaching degrees from the University of Michigan and Western Michigan University. His writing credentials include numerous Bible studies and the two-volume set on the Gospel of Mark, Evangelion. Doug and his wife, Connie, reside in historic Marshall, Michigan.
