Download or read book The Backwater Sermons written by Jay Hulme and published by Canterbury Press. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jay Hulme is an award-winning transgender poet, performer, educator and speaker. In late 2019, his fascination with old church buildings turned into a life-changing encounter with the God he had never believed in, and he was baptised in the Anglican church. In this new poetry collection, Jay details his journey through faith and baptism during an unprecedented world-wide pandemic. As he finds God in the ruined factories and polluted canals of his home city, Jonah is heckled over etymology, angels appear in tube stations, and Jesus sits atop a multi-story car park. Cathedrals are trans, trans people are cathedrals, and amidst it all God reaches out to meet us exactly where we are. Jay’s poetry explores belief in the modern world and offers a perspective on queer faith that will appeal not only to Christians, but young members of the LGBT+ community who are interested in faith but unsure of where to start.
Download or read book Misquoting Jesus written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When world-class biblical scholar Bart Ehrman first began to study the texts of the Bible in their original languages he was startled to discover the multitude of mistakes and intentional alterations that had been made by earlier translators. In Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman tells the story behind the mistakes and changes that ancient scribes made to the New Testament and shows the great impact they had upon the Bible we use today. He frames his account with personal reflections on how his study of the Greek manuscripts made him abandon his once ultraconservative views of the Bible. Since the advent of the printing press and the accurate reproduction of texts, most people have assumed that when they read the New Testament they are reading an exact copy of Jesus's words or Saint Paul's writings. And yet, for almost fifteen hundred years these manuscripts were hand copied by scribes who were deeply influenced by the cultural, theological, and political disputes of their day. Both mistakes and intentional changes abound in the surviving manuscripts, making the original words difficult to reconstruct. For the first time, Ehrman reveals where and why these changes were made and how scholars go about reconstructing the original words of the New Testament as closely as possible. Ehrman makes the provocative case that many of our cherished biblical stories and widely held beliefs concerning the divinity of Jesus, the Trinity, and the divine origins of the Bible itself stem from both intentional and accidental alterations by scribes -- alterations that dramatically affected all subsequent versions of the Bible.

Book excerpt: About the book: Do you ever look at people who call themselves Christians, and wonder about the lack of Christlikeness in them? Download or read book Wanted written by Richard David Cross and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 1999-05-31 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After leading a life of crime from a young age, a man finds God and a whole new life as a Christian minister in this inspirational memoir. In this riveting autobiography, the author, the son of alcoholic parents, reveals that he committed his first crime at the age of nine. At eleven years of age, he stabbed a student at school, and by the time he was twenty-five years old, Richard David Coss had served almost nine years behind bars. He had accumulated thirty-two arrests, twenty-eight convictions, and a reputation with the FBI as a “dangerous and incorrigible” criminal. Bored with the monotony of cell life and looking for a diversion, Coss wandered into a meeting of Christian businessmen and fellow inmates at the prison chapel. One of the men introduced himself and sat with Coss. Before Coss knew it, his anger and hatred had become irrelevant. What counselors, psychologists, sociologists, correction officers, special schools, threats, and prison had been unable to do in sixteen years was accomplished in a mere fifteen minutes. After an awakening desire to change, Coss faced his situation, discovered hope, and transformed his life. While still in prison, his influence resulted in changing the lives of other inmates. He was released in 1971. In the years that followed, he experienced his share of gains and losses, yet no loss was as severe as that suffered on April 19, 1995—the day of the Oklahoma City bombing. Coss, a grandfather at the time, described that day as “the worst day of my life.” Yet he and his remaining family survived with the support of each other and the strength of their faith.
Download or read book God s Gift to You written by Ithurburn Fred Ithurburn and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman Catholic Church's Eucharist should be open to anyone, regardless of whether or not that person has been baptized, is sinful or follows another religion. That's because Jesus Christ invites everyone to his banquet. But not all people feel the same as Fred Bert Ithurburn, a layperson who has written more than 200 letters to Pope Benedict XVI. He's still waiting for a response, but he isn't giving up on spreading the message of acceptance first brought to the world by Jesus. Just think how different the world would be if the early church fathers understood and applied the New Covenant properly, assuring a continued Gift of Eucharist to everyone. Jews might have accepted the more inclusive religion as a continuation of their own, and Mohammed might have felt welcome at a table where he was equally loved. The Greek and Roman Catholics would find no dispute, and no crusade would have sacked Constantinople. And that would have just been the beginning. In this sequel to God's Gift to You, you'll read some of the author's letters to the pope and decide for yourself the true meaning of the Eucharist.

Download or read book Jesus Manifesto written by Leonard Sweet and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2010-05-30 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Manifesto presents a fresh unveiling of Jesus, seeking to restore the supremacy and sovereignty of Christ in a world—and a church—that has lost sight of Him. Christians have made the gospel about so many things—things other than Christ. Religious concepts, ideas, doctrines, strategies, and methods that begin to eclipse the beauty, the glory, and the reality of the Lord Jesus Himself. We know a lot about our Lord, but we don't know Him very well. We know a lot about trying to be like Jesus, but very little about living by His indwelling life. Jesus Manifesto provides clarity on the most important points of our faith. It is a prophetic call to restore the supremacy and sovereignty of Christ in a world and church that has lost sight of Him. This manifesto emphasizes ten crucial areas of restoring the supremacy of Jesus Christ, noting: Christians don’t follow Christianity; they follow Christ Christians don't proclaim themselves; they proclaim Christ Christians don’t point people to core values; they point people to the Cross Christians don't preach about Christ; they preach Christ Read this book to see your Lord like you've never seen Him before and restore the sovereignty of Jesus in your life.
Download or read book Jesus Pope Francis and a Protestant Walk into a Bar written by Paul Rock and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pope Francis has taken the world by storm, captivating Catholics, Protestants, and non-Christians alike. Sneaking out of the Vatican at night, washing the feet of inmates, and taking selfies with young fans is certainly unlike any religious leader we've seen in a while, and some of the religious establishment is uneasy about it. The revitalization Francis is bringing to the Catholic Church is not without precedent, however. Jesus had a similar effect in his day, drawing crowds with his humility, kindness, and wisdomâ€"even as he drew the disapproval of established religious leaders. The things that have brought Francis such media attention are the same things that made Jesus so peculiar and attractive in his day. Thoughtful examination of Jesus' example and legacy, as well as an honest look at the similarities and differences between Catholic and Protestant faith, invites reflection on the heart of Christianity and how we relate to our fellow Christians. Readers will discover the power of heartfelt joy, radical love, and passion for justice to shake people out of religious complacency and into dynamic, contagious faith. Jesus, Pope Francis, and a Protestant Walk into a Bar looks at what is universal among Christians, what is unique to Catholics and Protestants, and how all Christians can practice understanding and cooperation across differences. Perfect for individual or group use, discussion questions are also included to encourage further thought and conversation.
