Book Cholinergic Ligand Interactions

Download or read book Cholinergic Ligand Interactions written by D. J. Triggle and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cholinergic Ligand Interactions presents the papers read at a symposium held at the State University of New York at Buffalo, 25-26 May 1970. The recent purification and crystallization of acetylcholinesterase together with real progress in the purification of receptor components indicated the desirability of organizing a symposium to discuss not only these aspects but also the structural bases for cholinergic ligand interaction with these macromolecules, the conformational changes involved with ligand binding, the quantitation of cholinergic ligand binding sites, and the roles of acetylcholinesterase and its isozymes in muscle disease. The volume contains nine chapters and begins with a study on possible conformational changes in acetylcholinesterase. This is followed by separate chapters on the subunits of acetylcholinesterase; in vitro studies with the cholinergic receptor of the eel electroplax; identification and isolation of acetylcholine receptors; assay and properties of essential (junctional) cholinesterases of the rat diaphragm; and structural variations in cholinergic ligands. Subsequent chapters deal with ligand interactions at the muscarinic receptors and changes in cholinesterases isozymes during normal and dystrophic muscle development.

Book Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors

Download or read book Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors written by Jean-Pierre Changeux and published by ODILE JACOB PUBLISHING CORP. This book was released on 2005-09-08 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acetylcholine nicotinic receptor is among the most studied receptors in neuroscience. Involved in muscle contraction and a wide variety of other neurological functions, including the processing of nicotine, it was the first receptor to be isolated and observed at the molecular level, providing a major research pathway for scientists working in neuroscience, biochemistry, pharmacology, and behavioral science. This book describes four decades of scientific research that inform our current understanding of this receptor. Jean-Pierre Changeux and Stuart J. Edelstein played important roles in pioneering research on the acetylcholine nicotinic receptor and on allosteric proteins, and here they reveal the complete scientific trajectory of that research. They begin with a historical perspective, describing how several fields converged around a single receptor and then explain the initial receptor purification and characterization. Subsequent chapters trace the investigations into various aspects of receptor structure and function, including the chemical structure of the binding site, the identity and properties of the ion channel, and the mechanism of signal transmission. In the final portion of the book, Changeux and Edelstein discuss recent studies on the three-dimensional structure of the receptor molecule and share their novel understanding of inherited diseases such as congenital myasthenia and epilepsy. They also address the integration of the receptor into its synaptic membrane environment and its distribution, physiology, and regulation in brain functions and cognition. Richly illustrated and lucidly written, this book provides an exceptional opportunity for scientists and students to follow a historic advance in our knowledge of molecular mechanisms and the workings of the brain.

Book The Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor

Download or read book The Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor written by Francisco J. Barrantes and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-08-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different techniques from various disciplines have made possible the analysis of the structure and the multiplicity of functions performed by ligand- and voltage-gated ion channels and receptors. This book covers one of the fastest growing fields in the molecular neurosciences - that of the ligand-gated ion channels (LGIC). Future trends, which are analyzed in each chapter, encompass the likely strategies for decoding structure-function relationships of the receptor molecule, the establishment of the differences in ionic selectivity and the mechanisms of permeability through the pore, and the possible use of genetic kindredness between actylcholine receptors of different species for the diagnosis of new genetic diseases.
