This book was released on 2008 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) programme of work was established in 2003 to address difficulties in poor training and indifferent career prospects experienced by some doctors at Senior House Officer (SHO) level and by many of those in Staff Grade and Associate Specialist (SAS) posts. A new Foundation programme was introduced in 2005, the Specialty Training system was reformed and the SHO grade scrapped in 2007. As a result of inadequate preparation during the implementation of the reforms, in 2007 the MMC programme plunged into crisis. The new centralised recruitment system, the Medical Training Application Service (MTAS), proved highly unpopular with both candidates and assessors. A major inquiry, led by Sir John Tooke, examined the 2007 crisis and called both for major changes to the structure of training and for the creation of a new body, NHS Medical Education England, to oversee medical education. The Committee's investigation finds that a divided and inappropriate governance structure, flawed project and risk management and poor communication with junior doctors were the most serious failings. Co-ordination between the Department of Health and the Home Office on restricting medical migration was inadequate. These practical shortcomings were responsible for some of the direct causes of the 2007 crisis, including the defective application form and other aspects of the short-listing process, the unsafe computer system and the failure to limit the number of applications from overseas doctors. The leadership shown by the Department of Health was inadequate. The Chief Medical Officer chose not to take on a clear leadership role and thus did not accept responsibility for the 2007 crisis. The Committee makes a number of recommendations for change and improvement to achieve a more flexible training system, and calls on the Department to address policy issues relating to the wider medical workforce.

Book Postgraduate Medical Education and Training

Download or read book Postgraduate Medical Education and Training written by Anne Hastie and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an exploration of how the higher functions of the brain can be investigated, evaluated and, possibly, explained. A central theme throughout the book is rationality, since issues requiring rational evaluation confront many people everyday though emotional factors are often more influential in determining action. The book looks at various questions: is it possible to understand what is going on in someone else's mind?; why do people who are known very well often react irrationally, in a totally different way to what is expected?; what are emotions, beliefs, feelings and desire? Throughout, episodes from history involving famous artists and politicians are used - Gladstone and Lincoln, Bach and Graupner, Austen and Dickens - all providing useful examples to illustrate how rationality can provide an insight into the feeling self.

Book Review Body on Doctors and Dentists Remuneration Thirty seventh Report 2007

Download or read book Review Body on Doctors and Dentists Remuneration Thirty seventh Report 2007 written by Review Body on Doctors' and Dentists' Remuneration and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review covers 185,000 doctors and dentists in the United Kingdom. The Review Body does not see any major cause for concern in recruitment and retention. The economic background suggests a period of difficulty and restraint. The Consumer Prices Index will exceed the 2 per cent inflation target, and the Retail Prices Index stood at 4.1 per cent in January. The Review Body outlines the conflicting submissions made to it by the professional bodies and the health departments and the NHS. Following careful appraisal of the assumptions behind the spending plans, the main recommendation is that all salaried members of the Body's remit group should receive the same basic increase of 2.2 per cent. Other recommendations are made on: whether independent contractor general medical practitioners (GMPs) should be within the remit; GMP registrars entering training placements; GMP trainers' grant; doctors engaged in sessional work for community health services; London weighting; seniority payments.

Book Careers Beyond Clinical Medicine

Download or read book Careers Beyond Clinical Medicine written by Heidi Moawad and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Career changes are becoming common among professionals in recent years. Many physicians may want to change direction, but often do not know whether it is the right thing to do or if pursuing a career outside of clinical practice would achieve their professional goals. Doctors have the training and education to contribute to society in many beneficial ways in addition to traditional clinical practice. Yet, there is no formal mapped-out route for doctors who want to pursue alternative careers, which is where Careers Beyond Clinical Medicine comes in. Doctors at any stage, from early in training to mid-career, to nearing retirement, can use Careers Beyond Clinical Medicine to clearly evaluate the issues involved when considering a career change. This book shows physicians how they can serve society and patients in innovative ways, and make a notable impact on health care delivery, policy and quality when they use their medical background in a non-traditional career pursuit. The numerous unadvertised opportunities for physicians are explored and a step-by-step route with practical advice for finding the best career is described. Recent advances in healthcare technology, medical science, patient education require physicians to play new roles that have not traditionally been well-defined. Doctors can innovate and have a long-term productive impact on healthcare in the United States and throughout the world if they learn to seize the non-traditional career opportunities available to physicians, or even create a new way to fill a void in health care. Careers Beyond Clinical Medicine helps illuminate that path.
