Book excerpt: I was there. I saw what you did. Blaise I wasn’t supposed to be there that night, but my friend Sienna talked me into going to the party in Land’s End so she could spy on her boyfriend. While hiding out in the woods, we witnessed an unspeakable crime. And we did everything wrong afterward. Connections run deep in our small town. I was pressured into keeping my mouth shut, even though every part of me objected. I assumed I’d always do the right thing in any situation. I was wrong about that and a lot of other things. I was wrecked by what I saw and how the victim was treated by kids I’d known all my life. I’ve been sick over it ever since, even as I moved on, far away from the town where I was raised. Fourteen years later, I learn that the guy who committed that unspeakable crime is running for Congress, and something in me snaps. I can’t bear the weight of that knowledge for another second. Finally, I report what I saw, and all hell breaks loose for me and others who were at that long-ago party. Some of them will do whatever it takes to keep the truth from coming to light…even if they have to kill me. In the midst of an epic battle, a new love gives me the strength to stay strong, to fight for my life and to right a terrible wrong. Content warning: A sexual assault storyline may be upsetting to some readers. Reviews for In the Air Tonight: "An unforgettable page-turner where love and justice collide in a breathtaking tale of courage and redemption. Marie Force masterfully weaves suspense and romance, taking you on a journey to find love in the most unexpected places.” ~ Bestselling author Sawyer Bennett “WOW. This five-star read just became one of my favorite reads of 2024!! With its scintillating storyline and cast of memorable small-town characters, this bingeable edge-of-your-seat read captivated me from the very start.” ~ juliereads_alot “This was such a riveting story! The writing flowed so well between all the characters and dual timelines. I loved getting a viewpoint from every character and seeing how this difficult situation affected each and every one of them. I could really feel the emotions of the characters throughout and was brought to tears by the end. This is such a heavy topic but written so well I could not put it down. And the romantic storyline—swoon! I highly recommend this one for fans of romantic suspense!” ~ 5 stars, Jennifer Horton on Goodreads “With multiple POVs, a split timeline, a small-town setting, and a heinous crime, Marie Force’s newest book is sure to be a crowd-pleaser among thriller-lovers.” ~ bookstilbedtime “I am a huge fan of Marie Force and love her books. This book is no exception, yet it is very different from her usual books. A horrendous event. Understandable and gut wrenching reactions from everyone. I love how the author used multiple POV’s to tell this story. I was totally invested; at times appalled and wanting to cry and at other times angry. I couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting (yes, it was 2am before I finished). Kudos to the author!” ~ 5 stars, Karen on Goodreads “Ya’ll, this is one bombshell of a book. It’s a short, fast, intense read, and it hits you hard and in all the feels.” ~ 5 stars, Dea Farrel on Goodreads “This was such a riveting story! Book Trapped in a Happy Life

Download or read book Trapped in a Happy Life written by Michael F. Duffy and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trapped in a Happy Life by Michael F. Duffy In his memoirs, Trapped in a Happy Life, Michael F. Duffy reflects fondly and funnily upon his formative years in Philadelphia. Between the dangerous games played in the streets of his neighborhood to the terror he endured at the hands of nuns in school – it’s a wonder that he survived to tell any of these tales, but we’re glad he did. As he moves into adulthood, Duffy tells heartwarming tales of “My Beloved Wife” (abbreviated MBW for time’s sake), and skewers everyone from Donald Trump to overenthusiastic clappers at concerts. But even his most barbed remarks are tinged with an endearing humor that keeps the reader hooked.

Book Chiropractic Medicine

Download or read book Chiropractic Medicine written by Robert Hartmann McNamara and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its very beginning, chiropractic medicine has faced challenges about the scientific validity of the treatment and the credibility of its practitioners. Since those early years, many of these criticisms have remained, but legislation, licensure, and litigation have created an environment where chiropractic care is allowed in all 50 states, and licenses are required of all chiropractors who wish to practice medicine. The implementation of the Affordable Care Act has changed the way insurance companies provide reimbursement for services by medical providers. With a greater emphasis on administratively documenting how and in what ways a particular form of treatment actually improves a patient’s health, coupled with a greater level of restriction on the types of services medical providers can offer without justification and authorization, many medical providers, including chiropractors, have had to re-examine the services they provide and how they operate. This study attempts to explore the life of chiropractors in light of all the historical and current changes taking place within the medical profession. It also seeks to understand the external and internal threats posed to chiropractors, with an eye towards understanding how and in what ways the future of medicine will impact the chiropractic profession. Despite the projected growth of job opportunities for chiropractors between 2014 and 2024, which, according to the U.S. Department of Labor is occurring at a much faster than average trajectory than other professions (U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, 2015), given the costs involved in completing chiropractic training (which can exceed $200,000) coupled with the low salary (recent data from the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics shows that the median salary for a chiropractor is $64,440 per year), along with the challenges of sustaining an individual practice (most chiropractors are self-employed in solo practice), these obstacles are formidable ones. This is particularly true in light of the recent development of large chiropractic chains such as the Joint, that offer spinal and neck adjustments at a fraction of the cost of a traditional provider. This ethnographic study consisted of systematic observation and interviews of 40 chiropractors in South Carolina from Fall 2016 to Fall 2017. Additionally, interviews were conducted with staff members, patients, and other medical providers, such as physicians, physical therapists, massage therapists, and representatives from the insurance industry about their understanding and experiences with chiropractic medicine. Phone interviews were also conducted with seven deans and provosts at chiropractic colleges around the country. In total, over 100 interviews and informal conversations occurred during the course of the project. All identifiers of participants and chiropractic colleges in the study were removed to ensure anonymity. Instead, pseudonyms were created that were known only by the author of the study. Additionally, data from the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation was obtained to document changes in the number of chiropractors who are no longer in practice in the state between 2016 and 2017.

Download or read book Milked written by Ruth Conniff and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling portrayal by the veteran journalist of the lives of farming communities on either side of the U.S.-Mexico border and the surprising connections between them “Conniff brings her skills and insights to a particularly urgent project: moving beyond the polarizing politics of our current era, and taking a deeper look at how people who have been pitted against each other can forge bonds of understanding.” —E.J. Dionne Jr., co-author of 100% Democracy Winner of the Studs and Ida Terkel Award In the Midwest, Mexican workers have become critically important to the survival of rural areas and small towns—and to the individual farmers who rely on their work—with undocumented immigrants, mostly from Mexico, accounting for an estimated 80 percent of employees on the dairy farms of western Wisconsin. In Milked, former editor-in-chief of The Progressive Ruth Conniff introduces us to the migrants who worked on these dairy farms, their employers, among them white voters who helped elect Donald Trump to office in 2016, and the surprising friendships that have formed between these two groups of people. These stories offer a rich and fascinating account of how two crises—the record-breaking rate of farm bankruptcies in the Upper Midwest, and the contentious politics around immigration—are changing the landscape of rural America. A unique and fascinating exploration of rural farming communities, Milked sheds light on seismic shifts in policy on both sides of the border over recent decades, connecting issues of labor, immigration, race, food, economics, and U.S.-Mexico relations and revealing how two seemingly disparate groups of people have come to rely on each other, how they are subject to the same global economic forces, and how, ultimately, the bridges of understanding that they have built can lead us toward a more constructive politics and a better world.
