Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Chippenham I foresaw the probability that, as the Jackson Papers had left the County, their very existence would soon be forgotten; I therefore proposed to myself to cull out of the Canon's Memorabilia, manu script and printed, those facts which had reference of immediate interest to Chippenham, and to frame a narrative which I might supplement by my own reading and observation. Download or read book Unity and Loyalty written by Ray Alder and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1915 the Chippenham Red Cross Convalescent Hospital opened in response to rapidly increasing numbers of wounded men returning from the battlefields of the Great War. This book follows events in Chippenham, a relatively small north Wiltshire town, that led to the opening of the Hospital. It describes in detail the people of the district who gave so many hours to care for the patients and make them feel welcome in the town. Inevitably there is sadness but also joy, the recurring theme is of a 'Happy Home Hospital'. The Hospital changed the lives of both staff and patients and this book follows some of those changes after the Armistice. Profusely illustrated in colour, the book derives from a highly successful exhibition mounted by staff and volunteers of Chippenham Museum and, although concerned principally with the hospital, it chronicles many other apects of the town and its people through a devastating war.
Download or read book Threads Through Time written by Sheila Rowbotham and published by Penguin (Non-Classics). This book was released on 1999 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has changed in the women's movement since the early 1970s. Since that time, Sheila Rowbotham has observed and commented on women's changing roles from both a personal and a historical perspective. Here she gathers nearly a quarter of a century of these writings. Among them are a reflection on writing history with a subjective awareness of class, gender, and race; a personal essay on growing up as a subversive in the conformist 1950s; and a look at how self-image was addressed in the early years of women's liberation. Interwoven throughout these essays are the threads of Rowbotham's compassionate wisdom as she encourages us to remember the past, care about each other, and pay attention to our own lives.

Download or read book History and English in the Primary School written by Pat Hoodless and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-22 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes to the primary curriculum over recent years have widened choice for all, yet the current wave of thinking seems determined to retreat 'back to basics'. This vibrant volume examines the many ways in which history can include and complement the teaching of English, to the greater benefit of both. Enthusiastic practitioners explain how lively classroom activities can influence the level of children's literacy, which means that the importance of the basics is recognised without compromising on the choice of subjects open to children. History emerges as a wonderful tool for exploring not only language and literature, but also as a way of stimulating the imagination and encouraging talk. The contributors here are all passionate about this vital link between two complementary subject areas and will convincingly win you over. The book is an invaluable companion for the student teacher, primary teacher and teacher educator.
Download or read book Wiltshire written by Nikolaus Pevsner and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From prehistoric Stonehenge and Avebury to railway age Swindon, the rolling countryside of Wiltshire encompasses every aspect of English building. Thirteenth-century Salisbury cathedral is set in a spacious close, within a planned medieval town, which boasts Georgian delights such as Mompesson House. Towns and villages range from Marlborough with its sweeping High Street to the exceptional Lacock, in the shadow of its abbey's remains, remodelled as an eighteenth-century Gothick fantasy. The great country houses include some of the finest in England: Palladian Wilton, with which Inigo Jones was involved, Stourhead set in its evocative classical landscape, the elegant eithteenth-century Bowood and the mellow Bath stone of Corsham Court.
