Download or read book Poceza M madzulo written by Julius Chongo and published by University of Zambia Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julius Chongo is a household name in Zambia, a celebrated Chewa poet and raconteur, renowned for adapting and creating a popular radio drama of oral prose and poetic narratives known in Chewa or Njanga as ?Poceza M?Madzulo'. The serial ran for ten years between 1966 and 1976 and became a hit amongst both rural and urban Zambians. The stories, which mix realism and illusion, were adapted from the storytelling tradition, and the story theatre performance tradition of the Chewa and Njanja speaking peoples of Northern Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia, as an effort to keep this tradition alive. In the same spirit, the stories have been transcribed and translated into English for a new generation. Although not intended for the written medium, the stories convey much of Chongo's idiom, originality and aesthetic devices. The corpus of stories and their translations are thus a valuable contribution to an understanding of Zambian oral literature in indigenous languages, and as a means of communicating these cultures. Further the work is an important effort to address the underdeveloped area of publishing in indigenous languages and literature in Zambia, a prerequisite for the nurturing of local cultural identity.

Book Multilingualism and Education in Africa

Download or read book Multilingualism and Education in Africa written by Ruth W. Ndung’u and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a must-read for every language teaching professional and researcher working in a multilingual context. Multilingualism and Education in Africa: The State of the State of the Art is an up-to-date exploration and wide-ranging review of the symbiotic relationship between multilingualism and education in Africa. The African continent is rich in languages. Most of her inhabitants are multilingual and many of the nations have embraced multilingual education. This book examines multilingualism in education from three broad perspectives: multilingualism and language in education policy in Africa; multilingualism as an educational resource in Africa; and attitudes and challenges of multilingualism and education in Africa. The book’s nineteen chapters discuss these three perspectives from East, West, Central and South Africa. All the contributors are leading authorities in multilingualism and education. The chapters combine a wide range of viewpoints based on theoretical, empirical and personal experiences. The reader is left with a deeper understanding of the unique features of multilingualism and education in Africa that have seldom been addressed by those who experience them first-hand. The book demonstrates successful practices in multilingualism and education; showing how African nations have determined what works for them without ignoring challenges such as policies on paper, attitudes towards African languages and limited resources. The benefits of multilingual education override the challenges. The book’s extensive coverage makes it an important resource for scholars and policy makers in the field of multilingualism and education. Overall, this book represents an important contribution to an important subject in education globally. The editors have provided an introductory overview to the book and commentaries on the three sections.

Book Town Nyanja a learner s guide to Zambia s emerging national language

Download or read book Town Nyanja a learner s guide to Zambia s emerging national language written by Andrew Gray and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first practical guide to Nyanja language as it's actually spoken in modern, urban Zambia. For too long, visitors to the Zambian capital Lusaka have arrived with phrasebooks and dictionaries of traditional Nyanja, the kind spoken in Malawi and Eastern Province, only to find themselves laughed at or misunderstood. Zambians living in town today don't speak that kind of Nyanja. Their language has evolved. This Nyanja isn't 'pure', it isn't standardised, and it's only just beginning to be written down. But if you want to actually communicate with the people of Lusaka in their own language - on the street, on the bus, in the market or elsewhere - this is the Nyanja you need. The book includes an introduction to Nyanja sounds and grammar, over 300 useful everyday words and phrases, and A-Z Nyanja-English and English-Nyanja vocabulary."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: In this accessible ethnography of a small town in northern Mozambique, everyday cultural knowledge and behaviors about food, cooking, and eating reveal the deeply human pursuit of a nourishing life. This emerges less through the consumption of specific nutrients than it does in the affective experience of alimentation in contexts that support vitality, compassion, and generative relations. Embedded within central themes in the study of Africa south of the Sahara, the volume combines insights from philosophy and food studies to find textured layers of meaning in a seemingly simple cuisine.

Book The Syntax of Chichewa

Download or read book The Syntax of Chichewa written by Sam Mchombo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book provides a detailed description of the major syntactic structures of Chichewa. Assuming no prior knowledge of current theory, it covers topics such as relative clause and question formation, interactions between tone and syntactic structure, aspects of clause structure such as complementation, and phonetics and phonology. It also provides a detailed account of argument structure, in which the role of verbal suffixation is examined. Sam Mchombo's description is supplemented by observations about how the study of African languages, specifically Bantu languages, has contributed to progress in grammatical theory, including the debates that have raged within linguistic theory about the relationship between syntax and the lexicon, and the contributions of African linguistic structure to the evaluation of competing grammatical theories. Clearly organised and accessible, The Syntax of Chichewa will be an invaluable resource for students interested in linguistic theory and how it can be applied to a specific language.
