Book Asian Traditions of Meditation

Download or read book Asian Traditions of Meditation written by Halvor Eifring and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meditation has flourished in different parts of the world ever since the foundations of the great civilizations were laid. It played a vital role in the formation of Asian cultures that trace much of their heritage to ancient India and China. This volume brings together for the first time studies of the major traditions of Asian meditation as well as material on scientific approaches to meditation. It delves deeply into the individual traditions while viewing each of them from a global perspective, examining both historical and generic connections between meditative practices from numerous historical periods and different parts of the Eurasian continent. It seeks to identify the cultural and historical peculiarities of Asian schools of meditation while recognizing basic features of meditative practice across cultures, thereby taking the first step toward a framework for the comparative study of meditation. The book, accessibly written by scholars from several fields, opens with chapters that discuss the definition and classification of meditation. These are followed by contributions on Yoga and Tantra, which are often subsumed under the broad label of Hinduism; Jainism and Sikhism, Indian traditions not usually associated with meditation; Buddhist approaches found in Southeast Asia, Tibet, and China; and the indigenous Chinese traditions, Daoism and Neo-Confucianism. The final chapter explores recent scientific interest in meditation, which, despite its Western orientation, remains almost exclusively concerned with practices of Asian origin. Until a few years ago a major obstacle to the study of specific meditation practices within the traditions explored here was a widespread scholarly orientation that prioritized doctrinal issues and sociocultural contexts over actual practice. The contributors seek to counter this bias and supplement concerns over doctrine and context with the historical study of meditative practice. Asian Traditions of Meditation will appeal broadly to readers interested in meditation, mindfulness, and spirituality and those in the emerging field of contemplative education, as well as students and scholars of Asian and religious studies.

This book was released on 2020-12-27 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mindfulness meditation disciplines are deeply rooted in the Far East's cultural past, and yet they are now being widely taught and researched in the modern West. What is more, when these differing perspectives on the same spiritual territory come together from opposite ends of the globe, their ways can interweave harmoniously - allowing for a new greater synthesis, or Way, to manifest. 'Mindfulness and Traditional Chinese Zen Arts' takes you on a journey into and through that broader landscape - into the heart of secular mindfulness and ancient Chinese Zen philosophy - by demystifying four traditional Chinese Zen arts that are more than 1000 years old. The author, Tristan Petts, a qualified British secular mindfulness meditation instructor, has spent two decades painstakingly searching for and practicing traditional mindful arts under authentic masters. Now, after having taught mindfulness and Chinese Zen arts alongside one another in the Far East for many years, he is committed to sharing the insights that he has gathered along that Way. Written in the simple, clear, modern scientific language of western secular mindfulness, this book holds the potential to delight, inspire, and enlighten anyone interested in world arts, mindfulness, Chinese Zen philosophy, or eastern practical spirituality in general.

Download or read book Classical Chinese Medicine written by Liu Lihong and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2019-04-19 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English edition of Liu Lihong’s milestone work is a sublime beacon for the profession of Chinese medicine in the 21st century. Classical Chinese Medicine delivers a straightforward critique of the politically motivated “integration” of traditional Chinese wisdom with Western science during the last sixty years, and represents an ardent appeal for the recognition of Chinese medicine as a science in its own right. Professor Liu’s candid presentation has made this book a bestseller in China, treasured not only by medical students and doctors, but by vast numbers of non-professionals who long for a state of health and well-being that is founded in a deeper sense of cultural identity. Oriental medicine education has made great strides in the West since the 1970s, but clear guidelines regarding the “traditional” nature of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) remain undefined. Classical Chinese Medicine not only delineates the educational and clinical problems faced by the profession in both East and West, but transmits concrete and inspiring guidance on how to effectively engage with ancient texts and designs in the postmodern age. Using the example of the Shanghanlun (Treatise on Cold Damage), one of the most important Chinese medicine classics, Liu Lihong develops a compelling roadmap for holistic medical thinking that links the human body to nature and the universe at large.

This English version of Robinet's work is more than a simple translation.Taoist Meditation presents a significantly expanded edition of the original French text which includes up-to-date bibliographies of Robinet's work and other Western scholarship on Taoism, additional illustrations, and a newly compiled list of textual citations.
