It analyses the evolution of the role of local governments in Chinese foreign policy since the opening of China’s economy in 1978, showing how the provinces initially competed with each other, and how the central government was forced to react, developing more centralised policies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first comprehensive account of Chinese higher education during the modern period examines the first hundred years of the development of universities in China, with special emphasis on the cultural patterns that shaped them in ways that differed from the development of Western universities. The first chapter compares Chinese and Western traditions of higher education and sets the Chinese experience in the wider historic framework of imperialism and colonialism. The rest of the volume traces the development of Chinese universities chronologically, with three main themes explored in each period: the knowledge map, or the struggle to develop a modern curriculum; the gender map or issues around the participation of women as students and teachers in modern higher education; and the geographical map, or the efforts to ensure that modern higher education became accessible throughout the whole country. The periods covered by the volume are the republican (1911-1949), the socialist period (1949-1976), the reform decade (1978-1990), and the movement toward mass higher education in the 1990s. Book From Dependence to Autonomy

Download or read book From Dependence to Autonomy written by P.G. Altbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an example of an international editorial enterprise. The two editors, located in the United States and Singapore, coordinated a team of authors in ten countries. Linked by common concerns, the lengthy process of preparing such a complex volume proved to be a pleasantly cooperative task - proof that there is a kind of invisible college of colleagues working on similar topics in different countries. This book is also an indication that scholars from the Third World and the industrialized nations can work together in a spirit of equality and understanding. This project has an interesting origin. It was first discussed at a conference on ASEAN - American higher education held in Malaysia in 1985, sponsored by the Regional Institute for Higher Education and Development, then headed by V. Selvaratnam and funded by the Asia Foundation and the Lee Foundation. At the time, geographical coverage was to be limited to the ASEAN nations. We also sought external funding, without success, to assist us in developing the project. Due to lack of funding, the project languished for a year. When one of our original participants, Andrew Gonzales of the Philippines, produced an essay, we decided to proceed without funding. We also decided to add several additional key Asian nations that we felt would provide additional analytic scope to the book. The result of this somewhat unusual collaborative effort is this volume.

Book excerpt: According to the World Health Organization air pollution is one of the most important environmental risk to health, influencing the burden of disease such as stroke, heart disease, lung cancer but also chronic and acute respiratory diseases, including bronchial asthma. For years, WHO has also been alarming about the enormous number of premature deaths that are attributed each year to exposure to air pollution. It is estimated that air pollution is responsible for over 7 million human lives, of which over 4 million are attributed to the exposure to ambient (outdoor) air pollutants. Therefore, it is a leading factor determining the global scale of morbidity and mortality not only due to serious diseases of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems or neoplastic diseases, but also significantly affects the reduced quality of life, usually associated with disability caused by chronic disease.

Book Schooling for Sustainable Development in Chinese Communities

Download or read book Schooling for Sustainable Development in Chinese Communities written by John Chi-Kin Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-29 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the academic foundations, trends and traditions of environmental education for sustainable development principally in Chinese contexts. It highlights contexts and case studies that illuminate recent Chinese initiatives. It includes case studies of green schools and reports on recent initiatives in school-based ESD curriculum development programmes in China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The book concludes with an overview chapter that points to likely future developments. The assumption underpinning the book is that experiences gained in such a major country as China will be of real interest to geographical and environmental educationists, professional educators and teachers elsewhere. Not only will it generate interest and create greater awareness but also it is hoped that these experiences will provide a platform for scholarly exchange and contribute insights on education policy and curriculum changes across Asian-Pacific communities in an increasingly globalised world.
