Book excerpt: Excerpt from China's Claims at the Peace Table Among all the powers of the world, great and small, now gathering at the Paris Conference, China endorses the plan of the League of Nations most unhesitatingly and wholeheartedly. Immediately after the announcement of the proposed League Constitution, China, throughout the length and breadth of the Republic, entertains but one sentiment, that, hereafter a new order of nationalism and internationalism based on right and justice is to reign in the world, and by this new order, China hopes to get an honorable place among the family of nations, which she is legally and morally entitled to, and by which she will be able not only to realize her material development without molestation from outside, but also to render greater and better services to mankind at large. This universal sentiment of China has been voiced by both her government and people. From Peking and from elsewhere, cables of congratulation have been forwarded to President Wilson, the founder of the League, with messages of appreciation and pledges of support for the newly organized international federation. Dr. V. K. Wellington Koo, one of China's delegates at Paris, and one of the members on the committee of the drafting of the League Constitution, has repeatedly declared China's strong and firm stand for the League, in the council meetings as well as in the plenary sessions. Why does China have such an undivided and overwhelming enthusiasm and faith in the League? China endorses the League of Nations, because she agrees with the ideals and principles involved, in her heart, not merely in words. Book excerpt: China’s emergence in Africa is the most significant development for the continent since at least the end of the Cold War. Of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, China is also the largest contributor in terms of troop numbers to United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (UNPKO). While China’s potential to be a force for change in Africa is undeniable, there are wildly varied and sometimes unrealistic expectations in both the West and Africa of China’s role in Africa. A more detailed and nuanced understanding of Chinese motivations in its African engagement is necessary, in order to work effectively with China for African peace, security and development. With Liberia, Darfur and South Sudan as case studies, Kuo comprehensively examines the "Chinese peace" and places it within the context of the liberal peace debate. He does so using primary sources translated from the original Chinese, as well as interviews conducted in Mandarin with Chinese policymakers, academics, diplomats as well as Chinese company managers and businessmen working in Liberia and South Sudan. He also traces and analyses the Chinese discourse of peace, from traditional Chinese political philosophy, through Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping to post-reform and the Xi Jinping era.

For at least five millennia people have been borrowing and lending at interest.
