Excerpt: The S-300 is a series of Russian long range surface-to-air missile systems produced by NPO Almaz, all based on the initial S-300P version. The S-300 system was developed to defend against aircraft and cruise missiles for the Soviet Air Defence Forces. Subsequent variations were developed to intercept ballistic missiles. The S-300 was jointly produced by Almaz with Samsung Group of South Korea since 1993. The S-300 system was first deployed by the Soviet Union in 1979, designed for the air defense of large industrial and administrative facilities, military bases, and control of airspace against enemy strike aircraft. The project-managing developer of the S-300 is Russian Almaz corporation (government owned, aka "KB-1") which is currently a part of "Almaz-Antei" Air Defense Concern. S-300 uses missiles developed by MKB "Fakel" design bureau (a separate government corporation, aka "OKB-2"). The S-300 is regarded as one of the most potent anti-aircraft missile systems currently fielded. Its radars have the ability to simultaneously track up to 100 targets while engaging up to 12. S-300 deployment time is five minutes. The S-300 missiles are sealed rounds and require no maintenance over their lifetime. An evolved version of the S-300 system is the S-400 (NATO reporting name SA-21), entering limited service in 2004. Numerous versions have since emerged with different missiles, improved radars, better resistance to countermeasures, longer range and better capability against short-range ballistic missiles or targets flying at very low altitude. There are currently three main variations. Two S-300-PM missile TEL and a 'Flap Lid' radarThe S-300P (transliterated from...

Excerpt: The Hongqi-61 (Hongqi = Hong Qi,, meaning Red Flag or Red Banner) is the first generation Chinese SARH guided surface-to-air missile (SAM). It is classified by Chinese as a low-to-medium air defense missile, and the series includes both land-based and ship-born versions, and an anti-radiation version and air-to-air version (designated as PL-11) have also been developed. The naval and anti-radiation versions have been retired from Chinese service but PL-11, the air-to-air version and HQ-61A, the land-based mobile version are still currently in limited service with the Chinese military. In August, 1965, Chinese Central Military Commission (CMC) issued the request to develop a medium range SAM. The 25th Research Institute of the 2nd Academy of the Chinese Defense Ministry (CDM) was tasked to do the feasibility study. A month later, in September, 1965, the plan was rapidly finalized and the project was code named Project Hongqi-41 ( 4l, Hongqi = Hong Qi, or, meaning Red Flag or Red Banner). Preliminary design work begun in the same month, and in January, 1966, the plan formally became a national project, and the missile was designated as Hongqi-61 (HQ-61), to reflect the time of its creation and the technologies of 1960's. By March, 1966, design was in full swing by the 25th Research Institute. In 1967, CMC changed the project to a ship-born SAM due to the urgent Chinese need of fleet air defense, and the primary contractor was changed from the 25th Research Institute of the 2nd Academy of CDM...

Book A New Direction for China s Defense Industry

Download or read book A New Direction for China s Defense Industry written by Evan S. Medeiros and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2005-12-19 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1980s, a prominent and consistent conclusion drawn from research on China's defense-industrial complex has been that China's defense-production capabilities are rife with weaknesses and limitations. This study argues for an alternative approach: From the vantage point of 2005, it is time to shift the focus of current research to the gradual improvements in and the future potential of China's defense-industrial complex. The study found that China's defense sectors are designing and producing a wide range of increasingly advanced weapons that, in the short term, are relevant to a possible conflict over Taiwan but also to China's long-term military presence in Asia. Part of a larger RAND Project AIR FORCE study on Chinese military modernization, this study examines the current and future capabilities of China's defense industry. The goals of this study are to 1.

Book Chinese Armed Forces Order of Battle Radars and Surface to Air Missile SAM sites

Download or read book Chinese Armed Forces Order of Battle Radars and Surface to Air Missile SAM sites written by Jaidev Jamwal and published by Jaidev Jamwal. This book was released on with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is the second part of a series I’m writing on ORBAT of Chinese Armed Forces. It covers Chinese Radar and long range Surface To Air Missile sites. Most f these units are quite easy to spot on most earth imaging services like Google Earth and their locations hardly ever change or do so over the course of a few months or even years. So this is one low hanging fruit I am finishing with earlier. This monograph contains a list of 490+ Radar, 200+ long ranged SAMs and related units marked and located on the map. Links for Google Earth maps are provided. One issue with this data is dated ORBAT (Order of Battle) which is based on old and partial information. There is a fair bit of information available about some of the Chinese forces after the reforms of 2017. But I haven’t been able to find any updated and reliable source of information about how the Radar and SAM units have been reorganised. While going through this document, you’ll find a few missing columns and some marked with symbol ^. It just means that the information presented there is a best guess or based on unreliable information. I hope to cover the missing parts and add some more information in the final release, a few months from now. You can find more details and other parts of this series on my website at: https://jjamwal.in/yayavar/order-of-battle-of-chinese-armed-forces/ Early access at Patreon, https://www.patreon.com/jjamwal. Book Russia s Contribution to China s Surface Warfare Capabilities

Download or read book Russia s Contribution to China s Surface Warfare Capabilities written by Paul Schwartz and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The provision of advanced Russian military technology has been critical for the development of China’s anti-access/area-denial (A2AD) capability. This study focuses on one aspect of the relationship, namely Russia’s contribution to the PLA Navy’s surface and anti-surface warfare capabilities. Following a discussion of the role of the fleet in China’s A2AD strategy, the author examines in depth the specific warships, anti-ship missile systems, and air defense systems that Russia has been providing. Next, he considers specifically how Russian technology has translated into new military capability for China’s maritime forces. Finally, he offers a projection of the likely future direction of Russian assistance in this area. While China has made enormous progress in developing its indigenous defense production capability, this report makes the case that Russian defense assistance has been, is, and will likely continue to be important for the development of China’s surface warfare capabilities and its A2AD project more broadly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 Missile Defense Review - January 2019 According to a senior administration official, a number of new technologies are highlighted in the report. The review looks at "the comprehensive environment the United States faces, and our allies and partners face. It does posture forces to be prepared for capabilities that currently exist and that we anticipate in the future." The report calls for major investments from both new technologies and existing systems. This is a very important and insightful report because many of the cost assessments for these technologies in the past, which concluded they were too expensive, are no longer applicable. Book Chinese Anti Ship Ballistic Missile ASBM Development

Download or read book Chinese Anti Ship Ballistic Missile ASBM Development written by Andrew S. Erickson and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM), the DF-21D, has reached the equivalent of Initial Operational Capability. Although it probably has been deployed in small numbers, additional challenges and tests remain. This study examines the ASBM’s capability and history, showing how the DF-21D meets multiple priorities in Chinese defense modernization and in the national security bureaucracy, as well its implications for the United States. The ASBM’s physical threat to U.S. Navy ships will be determined by the development of associated systems and organizations, which currently limit data fusion and coordination in the complex task of identifying a U.S. aircraft carrier in the open ocean. Still, the ASBM poses a direct threat to the foundations of U.S. power project in Asia and will undermine the U.S. position, unless efforts to counter its political-military effects are taken.

Book A Low visibility Force Multiplier

Download or read book A Low visibility Force Multiplier written by Dennis M. Gormley and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's military modernization is focused on building modern ground, naval, air, and missile forces capable of fighting and winning local wars under informationized conditions. The principal planning scenario has been a military campaign against Taiwan, which would require the People's Liberation Army (PLA) to deter or defeat U.S. intervention. The PLA has sought to acquire asymmetric "assassin's mace" technologies and systems to overcome a superior adversary and couple them to the command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems necessary for swift and precise execution of short-duration, high-intensity wars. A key element of the PLA's investment in antiaccess/area-denial (A2/AD) capabilities is the development and deployment of large numbers of highly accurate antiship cruise missiles (ASCMs) and land-attack cruise missiles (LACMs) on a range of ground, air, and naval platforms. China's growing arsenal of cruise missiles and the delivery platforms and C4ISR systems necessary to employ them pose new defense and nonproliferation challenges for the United States and its regional partners. This study surveys People's Republic of China (PRC) ASCM and LACM programs and their implications for broader PLA capabilities, especially in a Taiwan scenario.
