Book China s Refusals of Food Imports

Download or read book China s Refusals of Food Imports written by U S Dept of Agriculture and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is adopting stricter food safety measures that apply to both imported and domestically produced food. This study is the first to compile and analyze China's refusals of imported food in order to assess regulatory compliance problems identified by inspectors at the Chinese border. China rejected less than 1 percent of imported food shipments from all countries and regions during 2006-19. The rate of refusal varies from year to year. Some potential exporters may be deterred from selling to China due to risks of heightened scrutiny at certain times, strict requirements for documentation and labeling, and standards that may require reformulation of products. The European Union (EU) had the largest number of refusals of any exporter, mainly because its food exports to China are predominantly processed and packaged products, which China refuses more frequently. China's refusal rate of U.S. foods was slightly less than the average for all countries and regions.

Book Imports from China and Food Safety Issues

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FDA¿s increased attention to food imports from China is an indicator of safety concerns as imported food becomes more common in the U.S. Addressing safety risks associated with these imports is difficult because of the vast array of products from China, China¿s weak enforcement of food safety standards, its heavy use of ag. chem., and environ. pollution. FDA refusals of food shipments from China suggest recurring problems with ¿filth,¿ unsafe additives, labeling, and vet. drug residues in fish and shellfish. Chinese authorities try to control food export safety by certifying exporters and the farms that supply them. However, monitoring such a wide range of products for the different hazards is a difficult challenge for Chinese and U.S. officials. Ill.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This impressive report compilation contains the testimony of ten renowned experts at a hearing in 2018 investigating China's food policies and how they affect the United States. It examined China's food security and agricultural trade policy, China's investment in food resources abroad, the impact of China's biotechnology policies on U.S. firms and farmers, and export opportunities for U.S. food and agricultural firms in China. It also probed food safety challenges in China and how the United States should respond to food safety and market conditions in China. In addition, there is an issue brief from May 2019 about China's African swine flu outbreak and its implications for U.S. food safety and trade. A swine flu outbreak has significantly reduced China's hog population. The impact is expected to result in increased U.S. pork exports to China but decreased exports of animal feed products like soybeans and sorghum. China's poor food safety regulations and inspection systems contributed to the spread of the ASF virus.Panel I: China's Food Security Policies and U.S.-China Trade in Agriculture * 1. Joseph Damond Executive Vice President for International Affairs, Biotechnology Innovation OrganizationAs the United States' third largest provider of food imports, even small food safety risks in China could affect thousands of U.S. consumers. We saw a vivid example of this in 2006 and 2007 when adulterated Chinese pet treats killed almost 2,000 U.S. cats and 2,220 U.S. dogs. More recently in 2017 more than 600 Canadians contracted norovirus from frozen Chinese raspberries, including many children and senior citizens who are more sensitive to the virus's effect. The United States can learn from outbreaks like these as the U.S. and Canada import similar products from China and U.S. citizens were similarly affected by Chinese imports in 2016. Chinese food imports carry several risks that must be adequately managed. First, China's industrial development has left much of its air, soil, and water heavily polluted and this contamination has found its way into Chinese crops. Second, China has thousands of small-scale food producers who don't often follow proper food safety procedures. Finally, while China has made progress in reforming the legal framework behind its food safety regime, implementation of this framework has been frustrated by a dearth of qualified Chinese inspectors.

Book The Economics of Agricultural and Wildlife Smuggling

Download or read book The Economics of Agricultural and Wildlife Smuggling written by Peyton Ferrier and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States bans imports of certain agricultural and wildlife goods that can carry pathogens or diseases or whose harvest can threaten wildlife stocks or endanger species. Despite these bans, contraband is regularly uncovered in inspections of cargo containers and in domestic markets. This study characterizes the economic factors affecting agricultural and wildlife smuggling by drawing on inspection and interdiction data from USDA and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and existing economic literature. Findings reveal that agricultural and wildlife smuggling primarily include luxury goods, ethnic foods, and specialty goods, such as traditional medicines. Incidents of detected smuggling are disproportionately higher for agricultural goods originating in China and for wildlife goods originating in Mexico. Fragmentary data show that approximately 1 percent of all commercial wildlife shipments to the United States and 0.40 percent of all U.S. wildlife imports by value are refused entry and suspected of being smuggled.

Book Case Studies in Food Policy for Developing Countries Institutions and international trade policies

Download or read book Case Studies in Food Policy for Developing Countries Institutions and international trade policies written by Per Pinstrup-Andersen and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The food problems now facing the world-scarcity and starvation, contamination and illness, overabundance and obesity-are both diverse and complex. What are their causes? How severe are they? Why do they persist? What are the solutions? The authors of the more than sixty international case studies contained in these books approach the food system with a multidisciplinary perspective. In three volumes that serve as valuable teaching tools, they call upon the wisdom of disciplines including economics, nutrition, sociology, anthropology, environmental science, medicine, and geography to create a holistic picture of the state of the world's food systems today. The authors focus in on specific cases from all corners of the globe to cover topics including drought and soil conservation; land allocation and cooperative marketing efforts; and food safety measures and advertising policies. In documenting past successes and failures, these case studies provide a valuable foundation for future research and efforts to create truly successful and sustainable food policy."--Pub. desc.

Book America s Environmental Report Card second edition

Download or read book America s Environmental Report Card second edition written by Harvey Blatt and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-02-25 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible overview of the most important environmental issues facing the United States, with new and updated material. Americans are concerned about the state of the environment, and yet polls show that many have lost faith in both scientists' and politicians' ability to solve environmental problems. In America's Environmental Report Card, Harvey Blatt sorts through the deluge of conflicting information about the environment and offers an accessible overview of the environmental issues that are most important to Americans today. Blatt has thoroughly updated this second edition, revising and adding new material. He looks at water supplies and new concerns about water purity; the dangers of floods (increased by widespread logging and abetted by glacial melting); infrastructure problems (in a new chapter devoted entirely to this subject); the leaching of garbage buried in landfills; soil, contaminated crops, and organic food; fossil fuels; alternative energy sources (in another new chapter); controversies over nuclear energy; the increasing pace of climate change; and air pollution. Along the way, he outlines ways to deal with these problems—workable and reasonable solutions that map the course to a sustainable future. America can lead the way to a better environment, Blatt argues. We are the richest nation in the world, and we can afford it—in fact, we can't afford not to.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook for students in the health and social sciences covers the basics of linear model methods with a minimum of mathematics, assuming only a pre-calculus background. Numerous examples drawn from the news and current events with an emphasis on health issues, illustrate the concepts in an immediately accessible way. Methods covered include linear regression models, Poisson regression, logistic regression, proportional hazards regression, survival analysis, and nonparametric regression.
