Book China s Intercourse With Korea From the Xvth Century to 1895

This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China's Intercourse With Korea From the Xvth Century to 1895 In the following pages I have endeavoured to explain with the aid of official Chinese publications and writings of Chinese holding official positions, or well situated to know whereof they wrote, the nature of Korea's relation to China from the end of the fourteenth century to the conclusion in 1876 of the treaty of Kang-hua between Japan and Korea, which marks the beginning of a new era in the history of the latter country, its entry into the family of nations. Prior to the Kang-hua treaty the nature of Korea's relation to China was a puzzle to Western nations. They were told, at one and the same time, that Korea, "though a vassal and tributary state of China, was entirely independent as far as her government, religion, and intercourse with foreign states were concerned," a condition of things hardly compatible with our ideas of either absolute dependence or complete independence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's Man in Korea is the story of America's initial involvement in Korea as told through the private family letters of U.S. Navy ensign George Clayton Foulk, Washington's representative in Seoul in the mid-1880s. "The Hermit Kingdom," as Korea was known, was no ordinary diplomatic posting at this time. Emerging from centuries of self-imposed isolation, Korea was struggling to establish itself as an independent nation amid the imperial rivalries of China, Japan, England, and Russia; anti-foreign violence remained a simmering threat; the Korean government was a hotbed of intrigue and factional strife, its monarch King Kojong casting about for help. Foulk, fluent in Korean and the foremost western expert on the country, was an astute observer of this country's transformation. In his private letters, published here for the first time, Foulk recounts his struggle to represent the U.S. and to help Korea in the face of State Department indifference.

North Korea, however, continues to harbor a deep resentment of the United States and its southern neighbor and maintains the fifth largest standing army in the world, situated just north of the world’s most fortified demarcation line at the 38th parallel.
