Book China and the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries

Download or read book China and the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries written by Muhamad S. Olimat and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines China’s relations with member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council. It highlights the depth of China’s ties with the region bilaterally and multilaterally on a five-dimensional approach: political relations, trade relations, energy security, security cooperation, and cultural relations. Regarding each of these criteria, the GCC countries enjoy a strategic significance to China’s national security, vital interests, territorial integrity, sovereignty, regime survival, and economic prosperity. China has been an integral part of the political developments on the Arabian Gulf scene since the 1950s. Their bilateral ties have grown steadily since the Economic Reform Era, culminating in strategic partnership two decades later. China and its Arab Gulf partners have embarked on an ambitious economic cooperation that includes joint ventures in oil upstreaming and downstreaming, mammoth highway and railroad projects, construction projects, and above all, strategic security coordination in reference to security threats. Both sides are also engaged in a process of revival of the Silk Road within the Belt and the Road framework. Sino-Gulf bilateral trade relations reached $159,419.20 billion in 2014. The two sides aim to increase it to $600 billion by 2020, a goal within reach given the fact that they are concluding the China-GCC Free Trade Agreement, which will transform their bilateral ties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This handbook brings together a mix of established and emerging international scholars to provide valuable analytical insights as to how China's growing Middle East presence affects intra-regional development, trade, security, and diplomacy. As the largest extra-regional economic actor in the Middle East, China is the biggest source of foreign direct investment into the region and the largest trading partner for most Middle Eastern states. This portends a larger role in political and security affairs, as the value of Chinese assets combined with a growing expatriate population in the region demand a more proactive role in contributing to regional order. Exploring the effect of these developments, the expert contributors also consider the reverberations in great power politics, as the U.S.A., Russia, India, Japan, and the European Union also have considerable interests in the region. The book is divided into four sections: historical and policy context state and regional case studies trade and development international relations, security and diplomacy"--

Book The Dynamics of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Chinese Aspiration in the Arabian Gulf

Download or read book The Dynamics of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Chinese Aspiration in the Arabian Gulf written by Jasim Ali Eissa Alzaabi and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The GCC countries enjoy deep relations with the west [sic] ,while recently increasingly engaged with China. However, the region could be affected by Sino-American competition as the economic and strategic interests of external powers come into play at a time. Therefore, this confluence will affect the political, economic, and security environment of the Arabian Gulf at both the international and regional levels. China is one of the key participants in the competition for influence in the Arabic Gulf region, that consider as the richest in oil and gas.The bilateral cooperation between China and GCC states has witnessed a remarkable development in recent years, spanning a wide range of interests. This led to delivering the following research questions: What is the dynamic of GCC - CHINA relations? How can the GCC countries play a vital role in the Chinese belt and road initiative (BRI)? How does a geostrategic competition in the Indo-Pacific -BRI will influence the Arabic Gulf region's political, economic, and security? Sino-Gulf relations began in the 1970s and flourished after the establishment of the Gulf Cooperation Council in 1981, where the United Arab Emirates established diplomatic relations with China in 1984, followed by Qatar in 1988, Bahrain in 1989 and Saudi Arabia in 1990. In fact, Saudi Arabia established diplomatic and commercial relations with China in 1939. This relation were short-lived because of the Communist Party's domination of power in China, where the relations between the two countries ceased in 1949 and resumed again in 1990. At present, China is the main investor and business partner of several GCC States, where several agreements have been signed with GCC in concerned of political, economic and security perspectives. Therefore, their bilateral relations are on the rise and interest in trade, technology, and investment cooperation, as well as explore GCC markets. China seeks to revive the Silk road, a trade route that runs through 56 countries and builds a bridge between the three continents. Moreover, the Arabian Gulf is one of the most important areas to execute the Belt and Road Iniative (BRI), although it is not on the official map of the initiative. Government and private companies such as banks and financial institutions have also begun efforts to boost the initiative's position in the Arabian Gulf, especially in the oil sector, while China's energy needs are expected to rise to 14.2 million barrels per day (bpd). The GCC countries could find the opportunity to join a new wave of globalization and explore the new global marketplaces through Belt and Road initiative, because of their status as major energy suppliers. furthermore, [sic] the BRI will encourage GCC to diversify their economic structures and reduce oil dependency as the main source of their economy's prosperity. China has not indicated its desire for a military presence in the Arabic Gulf region as a challenge to US military power, but with its growing regional interests along with the ambitions of the Belt and Road Initiative, makes the stability of the Middle East and the Arabian Gulf region in particularly, a strategic concern for China. The GCC countries recognize the importance of Asia by adopting "Look East" policy in recrystallizing its external relations towards the East as a preferred partner, in particular after 9/11, as well as economic factors. In fact, the repercussions of the 9/11 attacks still plague the political landscape between the GCC and the West. However, the GCC foreign policy has created a regional and international balance, seeking through it to resolve disputes by peaceful means and employ all diplomatic, economic and human capabilities to achieve its national goals. This study aims to understand the nature of the development of Sino-GCC bilateral relations and both party aspirations to achieve their interests, considering regional and international changes.

Book Strengthening China s and India s Trade and Investment Ties to the Middle East and North Africa

Download or read book Strengthening China s and India s Trade and Investment Ties to the Middle East and North Africa written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China and India's spectacular economic rise over the last two decades has accelerated their trade and investment flows with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), particularly with the oil-producing countries. And while these flows are still small, China and India's presence in the region is on the rise. This report focuses on the following questions: what have been evolution and the impact of MENA's trade and investment relations with China and India? what actions can be taken to maximize the benefits from these relations and to enhance MENA's international integration? The main findings indicate that the region as a whole has benefited from the rise of China and India in terms of better terms of trade, significant increases in oil and gas exports, and cheaper imports. However, producers of industrial goods have been negatively-and in a few cases severely-affected by competition with the two Asian countries in both third and domestic markets. While China and India are investing more in MENA, they are contributing very little to job creation or to the transfer and diffusion of technology. Faster growth in the two Asian countries-and the associated higher demand for energy-will increase revenues from oil and the difficult choices associated with their management. For the labor-abundant, non oil-producing countries, competition with China and India will increase. But the lack of competitive manufacturing industries and services, the insufficient attention given in the past to building technological capabilities and promoting openness and entrepreneurship are constraining their ability to respond to competition. They need to accelerate productivity to tackle unemployment, especially among youth. This may require the broader institutional changes seen in China and India-suggesting the importance of a pragmatic reform agenda that can accelerate productivity, trade, and investment in the region.

Book China s Relations with the Gulf Monarchies

Download or read book China s Relations with the Gulf Monarchies written by Jonathan Fulton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As China's international political role grows, its relations with states outside of its traditional sphere of interests is evolving. This is certainly the case of the Gulf monarchies of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, which together comprise the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). China's levels of interdependence with these states has increased dramatically in recent years, spanning a wide range of interests. What motivating factors explain the Chinese leadership's decision to forge closer ties to the GCC? Why have GCC leaders developed closer ties to China, and what kind of role can China be expected to play in the region as levels of interdependence intensify? This book uses neoclassical realism to analyse the evolution of Sino-GCC relations. Examining the pressures that shaped China's policy toward the Gulf monarchies, it demonstrates that systemic considerations have been predominant since 1949, yet domestic political considerations were also always an important consideration. Relations are examined across diplomatic and political interactions, trade and investment, infrastructure and construction projects, people-to-people exchanges, and military and security cooperation. This book will appeal to scholars in the fields of International Relations and International Political Economy, as well as area specialists on China, the Gulf, the Gulf Monarchies, and those working on foreign policy issues.

Book The Gulf Cooperation Council at Forty

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of the GCC countries—Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—are undergoing historic socio-economic transitions. They are facing enormous strains on public finances and challenging economic outlooks, due to fluctuating oil prices, demographic pressures, high unemployment rates, and a lack of economic diversification. These countries also are likely to feel the rising impact of climate change, and global policies to deal with it, over the coming decades. In addition, seemingly unstoppable shifts in the long-standing international order, notably the rise of China and uncertainties about U.S. leadership, have potentially serious implications for the Middle East and beyond. This by noted scholars and experts considers the key trends shaping Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries--Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirate-- ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic, to climate change, economic disruptions, demographics and other domestic concerns, and shifts in the global order. The book’s chapters address such questions as: How will global megatrends impact the GCC? How can GCC states adjust and diversify their economies to meet the dual challenges of fluctuating oil prices and climate change? How can these states adjust their labor markets to absorb and support women and youth? How will inter GCC disagreements impact the region moving forward? And how will GCC relations with international actors shift in the coming years? This timely book, with its comprehensive analyses and policy recommendations, will be of interest to a wide range of readers interested in the GCC region, including policymakers, academics, and researchers at think tanks and nongovernmental organizations.

Book Growth in Economic Relations of China and India with the GCC Countries

Download or read book Growth in Economic Relations of China and India with the GCC Countries written by Nader Habibi and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oil-rich Arab countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have rapidly expanded their economic relations with Asian countries recently, particularly China and India. The main reason behind this development is that the regions complement each other in several dimensions. China and India are the fastest-growing, oil-consuming nations in the world, while GCC countries have the largest proven deposits of oil and gas. The GCC is interested in China and India as reliable oil customers over the long-run and the latter look at the GCC as reliable suppliers of oil and gas. The two regions are also attracted to each other because both are enjoying strong economic growth and offer many investment opportunities to the other. It is expected that GCC economic relations with China and India will grow stronger in the coming decades and serve as a good example of South-South economic cooperation for other developing countries.

Book The Arab States of the Gulf and BRICS

Download or read book The Arab States of the Gulf and BRICS written by Tim Niblock and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) relates to BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) is, in the light of the growing strength and importance of this organisation and the countries which comprise it, of critical importance. The GCC countries have fast-growing economies, and they share some of the attributes and concerns of BRICS countries. The issue is not simply how the GCC countries handle their relations with the individual BRICS countries, but more importantly how they relate to an alternative structure of coordination and perhaps power in the global order. Their established links and alliances may no longer be enough to satisfy either their economic needs or their security concerns. The objective of this book is to examine the commonalities and the differences in economic and political interest between the BRICS countries and the GCC countries, so as to assess the potential for cooperation and collective action. Whether the GCC could itself become a part of BRICS is also worth consideration. While the focus is on the GCC, the GCC's relations with BRICS countries have been, and will continue to be, closely affected by the wider Gulf dimension--the state of their relations with Iran and Iraq, and the manner in which BRICS countries relate to those two countries.

Book The Arab Gulf s Pivot to Asia

Download or read book The Arab Gulf s Pivot to Asia written by N. Janardhan and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades the relations between the countries of the Gulf and Asia have expanded beyond the economic domain to include political and even security arrangements. While oil and non-oil trade are still the fulcrum of their association, 'strategic' partnerships are fast becoming the norm. The contributors of this book argue that, along with economic diversification, the Gulf countries have also diversified their foreign policies, especially with China, India, Japan and South Korea, among others. Together with Russia, this could eventually alter the current US-centric security paradigm. This opens up the prospect for a 'collective' security architecture in the Gulf, which is key to regional and global stability.

Book Growing Economic Interdependence of China and the Gulf Cooperation Council

Download or read book Growing Economic Interdependence of China and the Gulf Cooperation Council written by Michael Thorpe and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The six nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have approximately 40 percent of total proven oil reserves as well as 23 percent of the world's gas reserves. Although rising oil revenues have led to greater outward investment flows, there is also a growing need for significant expansion of the domestic energy sector's capacity. Meanwhile, China's sustained economic boom has resulted in China emerging as the world's second largest consumer and importer of oil, with close to 40 percent of its import demand presently sourced from the GCC. This share will grow significantly in the future. Commercial relations between the GCC and China have to date been dominated by energy-related bilateral investment flows and China's oil imports. Although this will continue to be a central feature, trade and investment links in non-energy areas will further broaden and deepen the relationship. China's relationship with the USA in terms of energy is also emerging as a major issue. Rather than being competitors, a mutual dependence on stable and secure supplies from the GCC highlights the need for a cooperative relationship.
