Book Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are

Download or read book Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are written by Frans de Waal and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller: "A passionate and convincing case for the sophistication of nonhuman minds." —Alison Gopnik, The Atlantic Hailed as a classic, Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are? explores the oddities and complexities of animal cognition—in crows, dolphins, parrots, sheep, wasps, bats, chimpanzees, and bonobos—to reveal how smart animals really are, and how we’ve underestimated their abilities for too long. Did you know that octopuses use coconut shells as tools, that elephants classify humans by gender and language, and that there is a young male chimpanzee at Kyoto University whose flash memory puts that of humans to shame? Fascinating, entertaining, and deeply informed, de Waal’s landmark work will convince you to rethink everything you thought you knew about animal—and human—intelligence.

Book Why Chimpanzees Can t Learn Language and Only Humans Can

Download or read book Why Chimpanzees Can t Learn Language and Only Humans Can written by Herbert S. Terrace and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, the behavioral psychologist Herbert S. Terrace led a remarkable experiment to see if a chimpanzee could be taught to use language. A young ape, named “Nim Chimpsky” in a nod to the linguist whose theories Terrace challenged, was raised by a family in New York and instructed in American Sign Language. Initially, Terrace thought that Nim could create sentences but later discovered that Nim’s teachers inadvertently cued his signing. Terrace concluded that Project Nim failed—not because Nim couldn’t create sentences but because he couldn’t even learn words. Language is a uniquely human quality, and attempting to find it in animals is wishful thinking at best. The failure of Project Nim meant we were no closer to understanding where language comes from. In this book, Terrace revisits Project Nim to offer a novel view of the origins of human language. In contrast to both Noam Chomsky and his critics, Terrace contends that words, as much as grammar, are the cornerstones of language. Retracing human evolution and developmental psychology, he shows that nonverbal interaction is the foundation of infant language acquisition, leading up to a child’s first words. By placing words and conversation before grammar, we can, for the first time, account for the evolutionary basis of language. Terrace argues that this theory explains Nim’s inability to acquire words and, more broadly, the differences between human and animal communication. Why Chimpanzees Can’t Learn Language and Only Humans Can is a masterful statement of the nature of language and what it means to be human.

Book Dancing with Elephants

Download or read book Dancing with Elephants written by Lee Kohn and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not the end of Jake and Theo. Their adventures are just beginning. As the author, I have fully enjoyed my two leading characters. Some people might call them foulmouthed, womanizing alcoholics, but whatever you may think of them, they are real human beings true to themselves. I’m moving on to other writings for a while, but by no means am I abandoning my detectives. As of now, I have several books in the beginning stage, one of them being a children’s book. Don’t laugh. There are people out there who said I would never write a book at all, that I lack the skills. True, my grammar sucks, putting it mildly, but I didn’t let that stop me. I have never had an editor. My daughter helped me with this one, and I did meet a few people on the way who lent me support and a hand or two. I wish I had a dollar for every book I gave away to people who never even opened a page. This does not make me angry; it just makes me stronger. If my books seem to read differently or awkwardly, then you most likely don’t know that they should read a little like a screenplay. That’s because they were all written as screenplays and meant to be turned into films. I kind of like it that way. Most authors write 100 pages of story and 300 pages of description. I, on the other hand, like 300 pages of story and 100 pages of description. Leave description to the reader’s imagination. I’m going to take a much needed rest for now, but keep an eye out for me. I’m not going away for long, I assure you of that. By the way, if you’re all wondering what Jake O’Malley really looks like, check out Armand Assante’s latest works on film or just go back and watch the Emmy award winning film, Gotti. That’s my Jake!

Book THE WIMP CHIMP

    Book Details:
  • Author : T K Noell
  • Publisher : T K Noell
  • Release : 2024-03-22
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 590 pages

Download or read book THE WIMP CHIMP written by T K Noell and published by T K Noell. This book was released on 2024-03-22 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chance discovery was the impetus for this book. I had a cerebral aneurysm, was incapacitated for awhile, and had time to amuse myself on the internet. I discovered serendipitously that chimps, our closest genetic relatives, couldn’t float. Chimps only live in Africa, and we have a common ancestor. So by extension, we must have been living with them in the beginning and probably separated from them by crossing some watery barrier there. The rest of the book all came as a result of this realization, and over the course of several years I believe I've discovered the answer to those age old questions, where did we come from, and how did we come to be? The ebook is best viewed in colour.

Book Along the Routes to Power

Download or read book Along the Routes to Power written by Martin Pütz and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume grew out of the 30th International LAUD Symposium, held on April 19–22, 2004 at the University of Koblenz-Landau in Landau, Germany. The conference, "Empowerment through Language", was centrally concerned with the concept of power and/or empowerment as observed in the status and use of language(s) and their speakers in bilingual and multilingual communities. The book discusses the theoretical issues inherent in the relation between language and power, the empowerment strategies involved in language policy and language planning situations, and the issue of language endangerment in Africa, i.e., the fate of minority languages and their speakers and the sociopolitical factors perpetuating their exclusion from access to knowledge and skills. The volume constitutes a collection of papers by prominent linguists from many countries who explore the exciting interdisciplinary area of language, power, and linguistic empowerment. Broadly speaking, the papers focus on the theoretical and sociolinguistic problems related to the role of power in language policy and language planning situations in multilingual settings, language choices, code switches, and associated topics. Thus, the aim of the volume is to open up language policy and language planning issues as observed in multilingual contexts (nations, institutions, other settings, and domains) to the wider community of critical sociolinguistics by concentrating on the relationship between language and power. More particularly, it offers a decidedly sociolinguistic perspective to the study of language and power, which likewise has been tackled from other perspectives in the areas of sociology and political science. This interdisciplinary relationship is important both for linguistics and for the sociology of language. In this way, the book is an important contribution to general linguistics, sociolinguistics, minority issues in multilingual settings as well as the social sciences. In honor of his upcoming 80th birthday (2006) , Fishman's colleagues and former students are preparing five volumes by him or about him, this being one of them.
