Download or read book Bioinorganic Chemistry written by D.P. Kessissoglou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioinorganic chemistry is primarily concerned with the role of metal atoms in biology and is a very active research field. However, even though such important structures of metalloenzymes are known, as the MoFeCo of nitrogenase, Cu or Mn superoxide dismutase and plastocyanin, the synthetic routes to the modelling of such centers remains a matter of acute scientific interest. Other metalloenzymes, such as the Mn center of the oxygen evolving complex of PSII, are still the focus of in-depth examination, both spectroscopic and structural. Another area of concern is the interaction between drugs and metals and metal ion antagonism. Understanding the chemistry of metal ions in biological systems will bring benefits in terms of understanding such problems as biomineralization and the production of advanced materials by micro-organisms. The 29 contributions to Bioinorganic Chemistry: An Inorganic Perspective of Life give an excellent summary of the state of the art in this field, covering areas from the NMR of paramagnetic molecules to the use of lanthanide porphyrins in artificial batteries.

Download or read book The Role of Nonliving Organic Matter in the Earth s Carbon Cycle written by Richard G. Zepp and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1995-07-11 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonliving organic matter (NLOM) comprises the bulk of the organic carbon stored in the terrestrial biosphere and a major part of the organic carbon in the sea. Organic substances, which include litter, marine detritus, dissolved organic matter, and soil organic matter, have diverse effects on the Earth's biogeochemical processes and serve as a major reservoir of biospheric carbon, which can be transformed to carbon dioxide, methane, and other "greenhouse" gases. Given this broad spectrum of effects, efforts to adapt to or perhaps benefit from global change require a better understanding and an ability to predict the role of NLOM in the global environment. The overall objective of this volume is to provide experimental and modeling strategies for the assessment of the sensitivity of the global carbon cycle to changes in nonliving organic pools in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The discussions in this volume consider how best to characterize and quantify pools and fluxes of NLOM, the role of NLOM cycling on a global scale, human and climatic perturbations of interactions between NLOM and nutrients, and biological, chemical, and physical processes that control the production and degradation of NLOM, with an emphasis on processes that affect the persistence of NLOM in the environment. One of the most unique aspects of this volume is that it represents extensive exchanges between leading international scientists from both aquatic and terrestrial backgrounds. It will be of particular interest to organic geochemists, microbiologists, ecologists, soil scientists, agricultural scientists, marine chemists, limnologists, and modelers. Goal of this Dahlem Workshop: to devise experimental and modeling strategies for assessment of the sensitivity of the global carbon cycle to changes in nonliving organic pools.

Download or read book Hominatio written by M. Volkan Kisakürek and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2001 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical achievements in organic natural product synthesis can be recognized most clearly in the research accomplishments of Albert Eschenmoser. For example, his work on the chemical synthesis of vitamin B12 defined the frontier in organic natural product synthesis and profoundly influenced the science of organic chemistry. In addition to revealing the beautiful reaction pathways leading to compounds of great biochemical significance, Albert Eschenmoser has contributed innovative methods of outstanding utility for organic synthesis. Few individuals have so fundamentally influenced the science of organic chemistry as Albert Eschenmoser has. Over the years, a sizable fraction of Albert Eschenmoser′s work has been published in Helvetica Chimica Acta, hence the decision of the Editor to produce a special issue of the journal on the occasion of Albert Eschenmoser′s 75th birthday, celebrated on August 5, 2000. The highly impressive set of 67 original research papers submitted in response to the Editor′s invitation could not, for obvious technical reasons, be accommodated in a single issue and were thus divided over the August and September issues. The international reaction to this tribute has been so overwhelmingly enthusiastic that the two issues have been combined in this single volume for separate publication.
Download or read book Organic Geochemistry written by D. A. C. Manning and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science of organic Geochemistry bridges the gap between living and fossil organisms. It is concerned with the processes by which organic material changes after death, during sediment burial, diagenesis and maturation, to produce gas, liquid petroleum and coal. It is equally concerned with the way in which organic matter of geological origin enters the biosphere and interacts with living organisms. Applications of organic geochemistry to the petroleum industry include exploration (developing the ability to predict the occurrence of petroleum within a sedimentary basin) and production (predicting the response of reservoir rocks to interaction with organic-rich pore fluids) as well as in fingerprinting oil spills.
