Book Prizing Children s Literature

Download or read book Prizing Children s Literature written by Kenneth B. Kidd and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children's book awards have mushroomed since the early twentieth-century and especially since the 1960s, when literary prizing became a favored strategy for both commercial promotion and canon-making. There are over 300 awards for English-language titles alone, but despite the profound impact of children’s book awards, scholars have paid relatively little attention to them. This book is the first scholarly volume devoted to the analysis of Anglophone children's book awards in historical and cultural context. With attention to both political and aesthetic concerns, the book offers original and diverse scholarship on prizing practices and their consequences in Australia, Canada, and especially the United States. Contributors offer both case studies of particular awards and analysis of broader trends in literary evaluation and elevation, drawing on theoretical work on canonization and cultural capital. Sections interrogate the complex and often unconscious ideological work of prizing, the ongoing tension between formalist awards and so-called identity-based awards — all the more urgent in light of the "We Need Diverse Books" campaign — the ever-morphing forms and parameters of prizing, and scholarly practices of prizing. Among the many awards discussed are the Pura Belpré Medal, the Inky Awards, the Canada Governor General Literary Award, the Printz Award, the Best Animated Feature Oscar, the Phoenix Award, and the John Newbery Medal, giving due attention to prizes for fiction as well as for non-fiction, poetry, and film. This volume will interest scholars in literary and cultural studies, social history, book history, sociology, education, library and information science, and anyone concerned with children's literature.

Book excerpt: The 21st century Australian classroom reflects our growing and changing population: it's more diverse than ever. Children from marginalised and minority backgrounds are very often at greatest risk of poor academic outcomes, yet are still largely invisible in the resources used in our schools, including the literature through which students learn to communicate, understand, and express ideas. This invisibility doesn't just impact considerably on academic development - it may also have long-term social and emotional impact. As our schools and communities become more diverse, teachers need supportive strategies, informed by clear evidence, to build equitable classrooms. This book outlines a guide for teachers in creating a learning environment that is underpinned by diverse and inclusive literature - and won't add further layers of complexity to their daily workloads. This critical text explores the research and evidence-based best instructional practice to assist teachers to select and use literature with children as they implement the Australian Curriculum. In doing so, teachers can create citizens with a strong sense of identity, social justice and sense of place in the world and achieve equitable outcomes for all children. It features thought-leaders in this arena and provides practical, tangible actions for teachers to take back to their classrooms immediately.

WINNER: 2022 Australian Book Industry Awards Picture Book of the Year (Ages 0–6)WINNER: 2022 Educational Publishing Awards Australia Primary Educational Picture Book WINNER: 2022 Karajia Award for Children's Literature WINNER: 2022 Speech Pathology AustraliaBook of the Year 5 to 8 Years For thousands and thousands of years, Aboriginal people lived in the land we call Australia. The land was where people built their homes, played in the sun, and sat together to tell stories. When the white people came, they called the land Terra Nullius. They said it was nobody's land. But it was somebody's land. Somebody's Land is an invitation to connect with First Nations culture, to acknowledge the hurt of the past, and to join together as one community with a precious shared history as old as time. Adam Goodes and Ellie Laing's powerful words and David Hardy's pictures, full of life, invite children and their families to imagine themselves into Australia's past - to feel the richness of our First Nations' history, to acknowledge that our country was never terra nullius, and to understand what 'welcome to our country' really means. 'In Somebody's Land, [the creators] repeat a vital message in the hope that every reader closes the book knowing that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the traditional custodians of the land on which we live.' The Age 'The story of Somebody's Land is simple, rhythmic and lyrical but it also packs a punch.'Australian Women's Weekly 'This is honest, lively and vital reading for the whole family.'The Big Issue 'This book should be in every school library so parents and teachers can read it to their children and begin an important discussion.'Good Reading 'Somebody's Land really stands out as a book of meaning and education not just for Indigenous kids to learn but non-Indigenous to learn and understand the history of this country. And it soothes my soul.' Karajia Award for Children's Literature judge Bunna Lawrie 'This series is one of the most significant publications available to help our young children understand and appreciate the long-overdue recognition of our First Nations people in schools.'Barbara Braxton, Teacher Librarian

Book A Mother s Offering to Her Children

Download or read book A Mother s Offering to Her Children written by Lady long resident in New South Wales and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Written when our ancestors had a strong faith in the worth of facts as educative agents, and many educators believed that children's books should not only be morally improving, but should also set an example by offering only plain truth rather than mendacious flights of fancy. It gives a rare and authentic glimpse of life in the early years of Australia using the "catechism" technique which was much used for most of the nineteenth century, particularly in works aiming to disseminate knowledge. Within its limitations, the book does repesent a real attempt to communicate to children some of qualities of the Australian scene, and, within the self-imposed constraints of "truth", to offer relevant stories of high adventure." -- Introduction.
