Book Children s Source Monitoring

Download or read book Children s Source Monitoring written by Kim P. Roberts and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2000-06-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many aspects of life which require us to distinguish between memories of different events, such as deciding whether you locked the door or only intended to lock the door. Source monitoring, or identifying the source of a particular memory (was the event experienced? related by someone else? or simply imagined?) is a cognitive skill that develops across the life span. In this book, the first to integrate research on children's source monitoring, readers will find an accessible overview of source-monitoring theory and findings from the research programs of leading investigators in this area. The programs of research cut across different methodologies (e.g., nomothetic, individual differences, clinical) and are applied to a wide range of issues in children's lives. Particular emphasis is placed on the effects of source monitoring on eyewitness memory and identification, learning and knowledge, and the development of a theory of mind.

Book Children s Source Monitoring and the Role of Attentional Focus at Encoding

Download or read book Children s Source Monitoring and the Role of Attentional Focus at Encoding written by Stacie L. Kovacs and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was an examination of how children's encoding focus at the time of an event affects later source monitoring decisions. Four- and 6-year-old children watched a video of two speakers making various statements. The children were directed to either focus on how they felt about what was being said (Emotional-self focus), how the speakers felt about what they were saying (Emotional-other focus), perceptual features about themselves (Perceptual-self focus), perceptual features about the speakers (Perceptual-other focus), or given no particular encoding directions (No-focus control). The results suggested that emotional processing during an event is more influential on source monitoring decisions than perceptual processing. Furthermore, the results indicate the mechanisms by which emotional processing affects later source judgments varies as a function of the direction of the focus (i.e., inward or outward). We also examined how changes in binding processes correspond to developments in source monitoring. Six-year-olds' binding performance and source monitoring scores were positively related.

Book Developmental Changes in Source Monitoring in Young Children

Download or read book Developmental Changes in Source Monitoring in Young Children written by Uta Kraus and published by Sudwestdeutscher Verlag Fur Hochschulschriften AG. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most amazing things in early development is how children find their way in their growing number of memories. How is it possible for example that a young child can vividly remember a specific dialog and the grips carried out during building a stone dam together with another child that has been met once before? In remembering such experiences, it is not only necessary to remember the specific event, its place, its course and the persons that were present, but it is also necessary to somehow remember who said what and who did what. In two experiments I examine how young children learn to differentiate between the person sources of their memories and what favorable conditions and factors are for such early source monitoring abilities. The book is addressed to everybody who is fascinated by the question of how young children differentiate between the sources of their memories.

Book excerpt: Children’s Thinking: Cognitive Development and Individual Differences, Seventh Edition by David Bjorklund remains the most comprehensive and current topical textbook available in cognitive development. The text presents up-to-date, thorough research studies and data throughout. Bjorklund expertly introduce readers to the concept of developmental function, which explains that healthy children can individually vary in their cognition as they develop. This concept is discussed throughout the text within the context of the typical progression of cognitive development through infancy and childhood. In addition, the text includes framework showing that, although some traits are established at birth, children’s cognitive development is also shaped by the physical and social environments that surround them throughout their formative years. The seventh edition has been updated to include current and extensive research, sociocultural coverage, evolutionary coverage of memory development, children’s development of prosocial cognition, moral development, and the concept of overimitation.

Book A Guide to Interviewing Children

Download or read book A Guide to Interviewing Children written by Claire Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children may be witnesses to crimes or accidents, or suspected victims of abuse or neglect, or they may be involved in some form of legal action such as custody cases. In these situations, they may need to be interviewed formally, and if this is not done properly, incorrect or inadequate information may be recorded or the child's position may not be correctly represented later in court. In cases of child abuse, the child may not be the only witness, and the quality of their verbal evidence is critical. A Guide to Interviewing Children is a practical guide the evidential interviewing techniques needed by a range of professionals: social workers, forensic psychologists, lawyers, police and teachers. It outlines basic techniques, explains how to deal with children of different ages (from pre-school to fifteen years), how to deal with parents, the particular issues of sexual abuse, handling multiple interviews of one child and so on. It is written for an international readership, and will be more practical and cover a broader range of contexts than the other titles currently available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Represents a scholarly and ambitious attempt to improve the quality of interviews received by the courts and minimize the risks of miscarriages of justice, for victims and defendants This book updates the previous review of research on children’s testimony—reexamining and readdressing how the quality of information provided by young witnesses is affected by the way they are questioned. Drawing upon both experimental and field studies conducted in different countries, it summarizes evidence supporting the effectiveness of the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Protocol and showcases the Protocol’s superiority over other current interviewing techniques for eliciting detailed and forensically useful content from child complainants. Written with both child protection professionals and researchers in mind, Tell Me What Happened: Questioning Children About Abuse offers advice and opinions drawn from actual investigative interviews as well as academic research. Its insightful chapters cover: children’s testimony; interview and questioning strategies; how investigators typically interview alleged victims; the NICHD Investigative Interview Protocols; the impact that following the Protocol has on interviews and children’s responses; interviewing victims under the age of six; interviewing children with developmental disabilities; using tools and props to complement the Protocol; training and maintaining good interviewing practices; and more. Provides a primary source of guidance practitioners and professionals involved in child protection Updates guidance for interviewers by adding consideration of emotional and motivational factors to better understand children’s behavior during interviews Integrates the substantial body of research published over the last decade and reflects upon questions that the field should continue to address Tell Me What Happened: Questioning Children About Abuse deserves to be read by all practitioners involved in child protection, whether as investigators, interviewers, judges, or lawyers.
