Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children of Wild Australia All the time I have been writing this little book I have been wishing I could gather you all around me and take you with me to some of the places in far away Australia where I myself have seen the little black children at their play. You would understand so much better all I have tried to say. It is a bright sunny land where those children live, but in many ways a far less pleasant land to live in than our own. The country often grows very parched and bare, the grass dies, the rivers begin to dry up, and the poor little children of the wilderness have great difficulty in getting food. Then perhaps a great storm comes and a great quantity of rain falls. The rivers fill up and the grass begins to grow again, but myriads of ies follow and they get into the children's eyes and perhaps blind some of them, and the mosquitoes come and bite them and give them fevers sometimes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book in Gerald Durrell's Corfu Trilogy: a bewitching account of a rare and magical childhood on the island of Corfu, which was the inspiration for the Masterpiece PBS series The Durrells in Corfu. When the unconventional Durrell family can no longer endure the damp, gray English climate, they do what any sensible family would do: sell their house and relocate to the sunny Greek isle of Corfu. My Family and Other Animals was intended to embrace the natural history of the island but ended up as a delightful account of Durrell’s family’s experiences, from the many eccentric hangers-on to the ceaseless procession of puppies, toads, scorpions, geckoes, ladybugs, glowworms, octopuses, bats, and butterflies into their home.

Book This One Wild and Precious Life

Download or read book This One Wild and Precious Life written by Sarah Wilson and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen in USA Today's hottest releases and The Washington Post's 10 New Books Spotlight “Sarah Wilson is a force of nature – quite literally. She has taken her pain and grief about our sick and troubled world and alchemized it into action, advocacy, adventure, poetry, and true love.” — ELIZABETH GILBERT Wake up and reclaim your one wild and precious life. New York Times bestselling author Sarah Wilson shows you how in this radical spiritual guidebook, the book we need NOW. Many of us are living with the sense that things are not right with the world and are in a state of spiritual PTSD. We have retreated, morally and psychologically; we are experiencing a crisis of disconnection—from one another, from our true values, from joy, and from life as we feel we are meant to be living it. Sarah Wilson argues that this sense of despair and disconnection is ironically what unites us—that deep down, we are all feeling that same itch for a new way of living. Drawing on science, literature, philosophy and the wisdom of some of the world’s leading experts, and her personal journey, Wilson offers a hopeful path forward to the life we love. En route, she shows us how to wake up and reconnect with life using “wild practices” that include: · Hike. Embrace the “walking cure” as great minds throughout history have. · Go to your edge. Do what scares you and embrace discomfort daily. · #Buylesslivemore. Break the cycle of mindless consumption and get light with your life. · Become a soul nerd. Light up your intellect with the arts. · Get “full-fat spiritual”. Have an active practice and use it to change the world. · Practice wild activism. Through sustained, non-violent protest we can create our better world. The time has come to boldly, wildly imagine better. We are being called upon, individually and as a society, to forge a new path and to find a new way of living. Will you join the journey?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fur Facts The question is often asked is trapping cruel, and the answer from anyone who knows wildlife is unhesitatingly it is not. Agnes Laut, who is probably one of the best informed women on wild animal life in the country, has pointed out that there is less cruelty in trap ping than there is in the slaughter house. Anyone need only go into the wilds to at once realize that natural wild life is more cruel by far than the most careless and thoughtless hunter. To begin with there is hardly such a thing as natural death in the wilds. The weak fall victims to the strong. The weasel hunts the rabbit and kills indiscriminately; the fox hunts the weasel and so on through the en tire list; and if fur bearing animals did not multiply with such ter rific rapidity they would soon exterminate one another. To give an idea of the rapidity with which wild animals multiply, a number of years ago a settler in Australia, whose home had been in England, decided to have a pair of rabbits sent over to Australia as pets for his children. Previous to this time there were no rabbits in Australia and the rabbit was not a native of the soil. The pair of rabbits which this English immigrant had sent over from the old country was the beginning of the Australian Rabbit. In due time the rabbits had a litter of young. Some of the young were given to neighbor as pets for their children. Finally some of them left the barn yard and took up their home in the wilds. This was the beginning of the wild rabbit in Australia. There was no other wild life to destroy them with the result that they multiplied so rapidly that in a compara tively short number of years they overran the country. It became necessary for the Australian Government to build hundreds of miles of rabbit-proof fences to protect farms and ranches from their de predations. Their number ran into the millions and no headway seemed to be made against them. The pest, however, turned out to be a profit for the reason that their fur is valuable, the hair being used in the making of felt, most of our felt hats being made from Australian rabbit skins. The finer grades of skins are used for furriers' purposes for making low-priced furs. And are known in the trade as dyed coney.
