It began four years ago with a worldwide uptick of bacterial infections: meningitis in Frankfurt, cholera in Johannesburg, tuberculosis in New Delhi. Although the outbreaks spread aggressively and proved impervious to our drugs of last resort, public health officials initially dismissed them as unrelated. They were wrong. Antibiotic resistance soon roiled across the globe. Diseases long thought beaten came surging back. The death toll skyrocketed. Then New York City was ravaged by the most heinous act of bioterror the world had ever seen, perpetrated by a new brand of extremist bent on pushing humanity to extinction. Detective Jacob Gibson, who lost his wife in the 8/17 attack, is home caring for his sick daughter when his partner summons him to a sprawling shantytown in Central Park, the apparent site of a mass murder. Jake is startled to discover that, despite a life of abject squalor, the victims died in perfect health—and his only hope of finding answers is a twelve-year-old boy on the run from some very dangerous men.
Download or read book Even the River Starts Small written by Line 3 Storytelling Anthology Team and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even the River Starts Small is a collection of stories from the movement to stop construction of the Line 3 pipeline through northern Minnesota. The collection features anonymous writing, art, and photos spanning nearly a decade, and includes reflections on many of the diverse experiences that made up this grassroots resistance. There are hundreds of individual pieces of writing and visual art in the collection published in full color. Line 3 is a tar sands oil pipeline that threatens communities, land, and water along its route, as well as the future of our climate. In 2021, despite fierce resistance, Enbridge completed construction of Line 3. Anishinaabe water protectors led the fight, asserting their sovereignty to oppose construction of this extractive project through their lands. For the better part of a decade thousands of people in Minnesota and around turtle island joined together to try and stop construction with a wide range of tactics. After construction of the pipeline was complete, a group of young volunteer organizers from the movement set out to gather stories from the resistance to create a book that could be given to the movement as a gift. That team originally published Even the River Starts Small, the result of that project, in a limited distribution and gave away copies for free to people who were involved in resisting construction of Line 3. The book is now available for all through Haymarket Books.

After years of intense and meticulous preparation, which included paying off or killing all the right people on either side of the border, the cartel is ready to make its move. Before the U.S. government can seal the border, hundreds of thousands of cartel men infiltrate the country as far north as Phoenix. Enter Mac, a ten-year-old boy with unlimited potential and incredible gifts to offer the world. But these gifts stem from an unthinkable childhood; he was molded by cruel and neglectful parents in an effort to enhance his unparalleled capabilities. The harsh tests inflicted by his parents consist of a series of elaborate punishments, seemingly inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's quotation: "That, which does not kill us, makes us stronger." It is during one of these tests, stranded in the Mexican desert, that Mac stumbles upon an ancient codex by a pre-colonial Spanish philosopher, whose parched pages contain the secret to achieving a perfect utopian society out of a self-destructive mankind. Representing the inverse morality, the cartel will stop at nothing to destroy the codex and the child that holds it. The hunt is on. About the Author: Michael "Mac" Centuori is about to graduate from the University of Arizona with a degree in Latin American studies and a minor in Spanish. Raised in Phoenix, he now lives in Tucson. He is working on the sequel, The Throw Away Kids. Publisher's website: http: //www.sbpra.com/MichaelMacCentuori
Download or read book Bulletproof Fashion written by Barbara Sutton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of gun proliferation and persistent gun violence in the United States, a controversial security strategy has gained public attention: bulletproof fashion. This book examines concerns about security focusing on armored clothing and accessories for civilians. Available for children and adults, such ballistic products include colorful backpacks, elegant suits, sports jackets, feminine dresses, trendy vests, and medical lab coats. These products are paradigmatic of a "fashion of fear"—the practice of outfitting the body with apparel aimed at maximizing personal security. This fashion encourages the emergence of both a fortress body and an armored society. Sutton also explores the wider social factors influencing the bulletproof fashion phenomenon, including the inequalities associated with neoliberalism and the militarization of civilian life. The book sheds light on the role of emotions in relation to discourses and perceptions of security, and encourages feminist and sociological studies to pay attention to the linkages between security, bodies, and dress. It is ideal for students and scholars interested in security and gun violence, culture and politics, neoliberalism and consumption, and bodies and emotions.

Set in the year 2036 in Shillong Meghalaya, India, The Rupa-Khyriem family is at the height of their prestige and the father of the family at the height of his power in the state and the crown jewel of his success so far comes when he inaugurates the world’s tallest skyscraper in one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Three towers reaching for the stars all then connecting at the top relying on each other to stabilise their tall structure and the building itself seems more like a metaphor for the man’s rising status, with some predicting he could end up being the most powerful person in the country. But however a man with such stature is not someone without skeletons in his vast closet. His ultimate achievement may just stand the test of time but how should any man with such power react when his image, family structure and life start to crumble when the truth comes to light and the chicken comes home to roost? How much intelligence is too much intelligence? The idea of a love potion had existed for so long that it is hard to date its origin but what would happen when a young man in his attempt to find love and companionship unlocks the secret of making one? But intelligence also means having the ability to see and gaze into the future and what the young man sees with the power has unleashed into the world is human self destruction and in his epiphany he will have no part in it. What is done, is done, the only way forward now is to find the optimal way to make sure such powers do not come to light. In a fight between good and evil in a world jammed between those two planes, peace is only a temporary option. And Shimty is one police officer in the Shillong Metropolitan Police Homicide Unit who has to straddle two ways of doing things, either be the good officer she aspires to constantly be or break a few rules to get things done. But constantly seeing humans at their worst is not always a good thing. With the love potion in the air and a political juggernaut spiraling into destruction how can she do her job and keep her morals intact against such powers that can change the world around her that she would no lumber be able to recognise.
