Book excerpt: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a preventable health problem that has multiple effects on the family, including the youngest member of the family, the child. For many years children were not recognized as having detrimental consequences of IPV. Now that it is recognized that children suffer from the negative effects of IPV, it is important to examine how and when exposure to IPV is associated with the development of children. This study uses the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study to examine the socioemotional development of children exposed to IPV from birth to 9 years old. Using structural equation modeling, latent growth curve models were conducted to analyze internalizing and externalizing problems at age 3, 5, and 9. Children who were exposed to IPV, whether it be a violent and controlling or a controlling only relationship, had more internalizing and externalizing problems. Also, the earlier and longer the child was exposed to IPV, the more socioemotional problems the child had. Identifying the critical time period of externalizing and internalizing problems for children exposed to IPV is crucial for intervention techniques and child victims' long-term development. Every child should be able to develop to their fullest potential, by targeting intervention efforts at those critical time points, it could allow for children to live up to their full promise.

Book excerpt: Children who have been exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) experience a wide variety of short-term social adjustment and emotional difficulties. While children are affected at all ages, less is known about the long-term consequences of IPV exposure at younger ages. This study examined the impact of early IPV exposure (i.e., between birth and age 3), IPV exposure over time, and IPV severity on the development of children's prosocial skills and aggressive behavior. Additionally, the effect of maternal warmth and maternal depression over time on IPV-exposed children's social behavior trajectories was examined. Secondary data analysis was conducted using the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW), a national longitudinal study designed to assess outcomes of children who have been abused or neglected. Latent growth curve modeling was used while controlling for maternal demographics, maternal substance use, household characteristics, and child maltreatment. The more frequently children were exposed between birth and the age of 3 the more aggressive behavior problems were exhibited by age 8 compared to nonexposed children. When examining IPV exposure across time, IPV exposure was associated with increases in preschool age children's aggressive behavior and decreases in school age children's prosocial skills. Longer durations of exposure to severe forms of IPV were significantly related to higher aggressive behavior over time. Higher levels of maternal warmth were a significant predictor of increased prosocial skills over time while maternal depression was a significant indicator of increased aggressive behavior over time. Understanding the developmental period of when IPV exposure has the greatest effect on children's development may provide insight into when to intervene before problem behaviors become more pervasive. Results from this study suggest that assessments conducted by social worker clinicians need to account for the child's age when IPV exposure began and the nature of exposure (i.e., duration and level of severity). Interventions should be targeted towards those children who are exposed when they are 3 years or younger, who have experienced longer duration or severe forms of IPV exposure, and who have mothers who are currently depressed or exhibiting low levels of maternal warmth.

Book excerpt: Controlling for fixed effects, child abuse and household income, partner violence was associated with significantly higher levels of externalizing behavior, internalizing behavior and drinking. Given these effects, this paper then investigates some theoretical mechanisms that may cause the relationship between intimate partner violence and child outcomes. Using fixed effects mediation models, anxiety, depression, parenting and the age of exposure were found to partially mediate the effects of intimate partner violence on externalizing behavior. Partner violence may thus occasion increases in child anxiety and depression and decreases in parenting skills, resulting in increased externalizing behavior. In addition, the impact of intimate partner violence on externalizing appears to be more severe for older children. The author suggests that policy makers and clinicians seeking to ameliorate the effects of intimate partner violence on child externalizing behavior focus on helping the child to cope with anxiety and depression and assisting parents to develop and maintain parenting skills.

The accumulated data on co-occurrence also provide strong evidence that prevention and intervention should be organized around the full context of individuals’ experiences, not narrowly defined subtypes of violence. Managing the flood of new research and practice innovations is a challenge, however. New means of communication and integration are needed to meet this challenge, and the Web of Violence is intended to contribute to this process by serving as a concise overview of the conceptual and empirical work that form a basis for understanding the interconnections across forms of violence throughout the lifespan. It also offers ideas and directions for prevention, intervention, and public policy. A number of initiatives are emerging to integrate the findings on co-occurrence into research and action. The American Psychological Association established a new journal, Psychology of Violence, which is a forum for research on all types of violence. Sherry Hamby is the founding editor and John Grych is associate editor and co-editor of a special issue on the co-occurrence of violence in 2012. Dr. Hamby also is a co-investigator of the National Survey of Children’s Exposure to Violence (NatSCEV), which has drawn attention to polyvictimization. Polyvictimization is a focus of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Defending Childhood Initiative and has recently been featured in calls for grant proposals by the Office of Victims of Crime and National Institutes for Justice.

This paper uses a unique UK longitudinal child development survey to study the relationship between verbal and physical abuse experienced by mothers and children's development up to the age of seven. Estimating production functions for cognitive, social, and socio-emotional skills we find that exposure during pre-school years has a quantitatively important negative effect on socio-emotional skills among toddlers and negatively affects cognitive and social skills after age three. The estimated impact on cognitive development is consistent with measures of cognitive skills based on school-based tests.
