Book Current Trends in Child Second Language Acquisition

Download or read book Current Trends in Child Second Language Acquisition written by Belma Haznedar and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008-07-09 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents recent generative research on the nature of grammars of child second language (L2) acquirers -- a learner population whose exposure to an L2 occurs between the ages of 4 to 8. The main goal is to define child L2 acquisition in relation to other types of acquisition such as child monolingual and bilingual acquisition, adult L2 acquisition, and specific language impairment. This comparative perspective opens up new angles for the discussion of currently debated issues such as the role of Universal Grammar in constraining development, developmental sequences in L2, maturational influences on the 'growth' of grammar, critical period effects for different linguistic domains, initial state and ultimate attainment in relation to length of exposure, and L1-transfer in relation to age of onset. These issues are explored using longitudinal, cross-sectional, and experimental data from L2 children acquiring a range of languages, including Dutch, English, French, and Greek.

Book Do Children Learn Second Languages Easier Than Adults A Comparative Analysis of Child and Adult Second Language Acquisition

Download or read book Do Children Learn Second Languages Easier Than Adults A Comparative Analysis of Child and Adult Second Language Acquisition written by Kevin Salzmann and published by . This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 2,3, University of Kassel (Institut fur Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Introduction to Second Language Acquisition, language: English, abstract: In the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA), researchers often get confronted with a controversial issue: Are children better second language learners than adults? Do they always outperform older learners? After a general introduction into the field of SLA, this term paper focuses on the relevance of age in second language learning. Theories of critical and sensitive periods during the learning process will be examined in order to emphasize that age has an important impact on effective SLA. Afterwards, specific differences in child and adult SLA will be taken into consideration; how do children acquire a second language and how is it different from the acquisition of an old- er person? By answering these questions differentiated it might be possible to come to a conclusion whether children or adults are better second language learners.

Book Second Language Acquisition and the Younger Learner

Download or read book Second Language Acquisition and the Younger Learner written by Jenefer Philp and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume of work highlights the distinctiveness of child SLA through a collection of different types of empirical research specific to younger learners. Characteristics of children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development distinguish their experiences from those of adult L2 learners, creating intriguing issues for SLA research, and also raising important practical questions regarding effective pedagogical techniques for learners of different ages. While child SLA is often typically thought of as simple (and often enjoyable and universally effortless), in other words, as “child’s play”, the complex portraits of young second language learners which emerge in the 16 papers collected in this book invite the reader to reconsider the reality for many younger learners. Chapters by internationally renowned authors together with reports by emerging researchers describe second and foreign language learning by children ranging from pre-schoolers to young adolescents, in home and school contexts, with caregivers, peers, and teachers as interlocutors.

Book Age as a Factor in Second Language Acquisition

Download or read book Age as a Factor in Second Language Acquisition written by Jasmina Murad and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, Free University of Berlin (Institute for English Linguistics), course: Second Language Acquisition, 23 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: One of the central questions that SLA has tried to answer is why learners of a non-native language (L2) evince such a high degree of interindividual variation in their final attainment relative to the L2 components and skills they have acquired. In order to offer a satisfactory response to this key issue, SLA researchers have posited the existence of a set of individual factors of a very different nature, such as aptitude, motivation, attitude, personality, and intelligence, among others, that might explain such variation. However, one of the most obvious potential explanations for the lack of success of L2 learners compared to L1 learners is that the acquisition of a foreign language begins at a later age than that of the mother tongue does. Thus, it has been prevalently assumed that age itself is a predictor of second language proficiency. This paper focuses on research which has been carried out on maturational constraints for SLA and hereby tries to find answers to various questions concerning age as a factor in SLA.

Book First and Second Language Acquisition

Download or read book First and Second Language Acquisition written by Jürgen M. Meisel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-07 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infants and very young children develop almost miraculously the ability of speech, without apparent effort, without even being taught - as opposed to the teenager or the adult struggling without, it seems, ever being able to reach the same level of proficiency as five year olds in their first language. This useful textbook serves as a guide to different types of language acquisition: monolingual and bilingual first language development and child and adult second language acquisition. Unlike other books, it systematically compares first and second language acquisition, drawing on data from several languages. Research questions and findings from various subfields are helpfully summarized to show students how they are related and how they often complement each other. The essential guide to studying first and second language acquisition, it will be used on courses in linguistics, modern languages and developmental psychology.

Book Child Second Language Acquisition

Download or read book Child Second Language Acquisition written by Sonia Rocca and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the first books in child second language acquisition (SLA), this book focuses on the core area of tense-aspect morphology, reporting on three L1-Italian children learning L2 English vs. three L1-English children learning L2 Italian. An innovative longitudinal/bidirectional research design, where two languages represent both source and target, show effects of language transfer in learners that, because of their age, still have potential to become native-speakers of the target. An unusual feature of this book is that relevant studies of acquisition of L2 Italian, some heretofore only in Italian, are reviewed, incorporated into the study and made available to a more general audience. Though the main focus is on child SLA, crucial comparisons to both first language acquisition vs. adult SLA are presented. This approach will thus be of interest more generally to readers in first and second language acquisition and child development.

Book The Way of the Linguist

Download or read book The Way of the Linguist written by Steve Kaufmann and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005-11 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Way of The Linguist, A language learning odyssey. It is now a cliché that the world is a smaller place. We think nothing of jumping on a plane to travel to another country or continent. The most exotic locations are now destinations for mass tourism. Small business people are dealing across frontiers and language barriers like never before. The Internet brings different languages and cultures to our finger-tips. English, the hybrid language of an island at the western extremity of Europe seems to have an unrivalled position as an international medium of communication. But historically periods of cultural and economic domination have never lasted forever. Do we not lose something by relying on the wide spread use of English rather than discovering other languages and cultures? As citizens of this shrunken world, would we not be better off if we were able to speak a few languages other than our own? The answer is obviously yes. Certainly Steve Kaufmann thinks so, and in his busy life as a diplomat and businessman he managed to learn to speak nine languages fluently and observe first hand some of the dominant cultures of Europe and Asia. Why do not more people do the same? In his book The Way of The Linguist, A language learning odyssey, Steve offers some answers. Steve feels anyone can learn a language if they want to. He points out some of the obstacles that hold people back. Drawing on his adventures in Europe and Asia, as a student and businessman, he describes the rewards that come from knowing languages. He relates his evolution as a language learner, abroad and back in his native Canada and explains the kind of attitude that will enable others to achieve second language fluency. Many people have taken on the challenge of language learning but have been frustrated by their lack of success. This book offers detailed advice on the kind of study practices that will achieve language breakthroughs. Steve has developed a language learning system available online at: www.thelinguist.com.

Book Individual Differences in Second Language Learning

Download or read book Individual Differences in Second Language Learning written by Peter Skehan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the way in which learners differ from one another is of fundamental concern to those involved in second-language acquisition, either as researchers or teachers. This account is the first to review at book length the important research into differences, considering matters such as aptitude, motivation, learner strategies, personality and interaction between learner characteristics and types of instruction.

Book Are Children Better at Learning Languages than Adults

Download or read book Are Children Better at Learning Languages than Adults written by M. Amira and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2023-03-20 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2021 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,5, Trinity College Dublin (Centre for Language and Communication Studies), course: Language, the Individual and Society, language: English, abstract: The assumption that children are better at learning languages than adults is neither new nor resolved and provides a constant space for debate in the field of linguistic research. The role of age in language acquisition is a contested and complex topic and the question whether children are better language learners provides a broad basis for discussion and reflects general beliefs that persist concerning language learning. However, this question is too general and must be narrowed down in order to stay within the realm of a realistic focus and to develop a reasonable argument. Therefore, I will investigate this question on the basis of age effects with a particular focus on second language acquisition. This essay discusses positions coming in for and against the assertion that children are better language learner than adults. In order to access the problematic of this question, we are going to take a look at common beliefs on age effects in second language acquisition. In the following analyses, the common “the younger, the better” belief is discussed, in combination with related SLA myths. In this context, the role of internal and external factors on SLA and in what way they impact bilingual outcome is taken into consideration. On the basis of this knowledge, particular differences in language acquisition for younger and older learners emerge, which demonstrate the complexity and range of language development. Next, we will approach various perspectives on the notion of the involvement of a biological variable that determines or influences language proficiency and whether this variable creates a biological advantage for children in language acquisition.

Book Second Language Learning Before Adulthood

Download or read book Second Language Learning Before Adulthood written by Vanessa De Wilde and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have looked into the role of individual differences in second language learning and found that differences between learners in areas such as language aptitude, language learning motivation and exposure to the language influence second language learning. Most of this research concerned adults. Far fewer studies have addressed the role of individual differences in second language learning of young learners. As second language learning programmes tend to start earlier than before and children are nowadays frequently exposed to a foreign language in social settings such as online games and social media, studying the role of individual differences in young learners can contribute both to SLA-theories and to evidence-based L2 education. This book discusses recent findings concerning the role of individual differences in language learning in young learners. The chapters in the book concern different topics linked to internal individual differences such as language aptitude, motivation, attitude and external individual differences such as exposure and type of instruction, the relative contribution of internal and external factors to language learning, and the interplay between the two types of individual differences.
