Download or read book What Is Race written by Joshua Glasgow and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across public discourse, in the media, politics, many branches of academic inquiry, and ordinary daily interactions, we spend a lot time talking about race: race relations, racial violence, discrimination based on race, racial integration, racial progress. It is fair to say that questions about race have vexed our social life. But for all we speak about race, do we know what race is? Is it a social construct or a biological object? Is it a bankrupt holdover from a time before sophisticated scientific understanding and genetics, or can it still hold up in biological, genetic, and other types of research? Most fundamentally, is race real? In this book, four prominent philosophers and race theorists debate how best to answer these difficult questions, applying philosophical tools and the principles of social justice to cutting-edge findings from the biological and social sciences. Each presents a distinct view of race: Sally Haslanger argues that race is a socio-political reality. Chike Jeffers maintains that race is not only political but also, importantly, cultural. Quayshawn Spencer pursues the idea that race is biologically real. And Joshua Glasgow argues that either race is not real, or if it is, it must be real in a way that is neither social nor biological. Each offers an argument for their own view and then replies to the others. Woven together, the result is a lively debate that opens up numerous ways of understanding race. Above all, it is call for sophisticated and principled discussion of something that significantly permeates our lives.

Book excerpt: “Storylines and twists abound. But action is secondary to atmosphere: Onuzo excels at evoking a stratified city, where society weddings feature ‘ice sculptures as cold as the unmarried belles’ and thugs write tidy receipts for kickbacks extorted from homeless travelers.” —The New Yorker When army officer Chike Ameobi is ordered to kill innocent civilians, he knows it is time to desert his post. As he travels toward Lagos with Yemi, his junior officer, and into the heart of a political scandal involving Nigeria’s education minister, Chike becomes the leader of a new platoon, a band of runaways who share his desire for a different kind of life. Among them is Fineboy, a fighter with a rebel group, desperate to pursue his dream of becoming a radio DJ; Isoken, a 16–year–old girl whose father is thought to have been killed by rebels; and the beautiful Oma, escaping a wealthy, abusive husband. Full of humor and heart, Welcome to Lagos is a high–spirited novel about aspirations and escape, innocence and corruption. It offers a provocative portrait of contemporary Nigeria that marks the arrival in the United States of an extraordinary young writer.

Book excerpt: Set in the ancient kingdom of Nri, now Igbo land in modern day Nigeria, Ikedinobi is a bush hunter, warrior and successful wrestler. When the Dibia, the chief priest of Iruwelle and voice of the gods, tells him about his great but unknown destiny buried in a land far away from theirs, the young man sets off for the land of the spirits to retrieve the Okwute-a stone analogous to the highly disputed philosopher's stone. However, what Ikedinobi does not understand is that his quest to retrieve the Okwute is a challenge to his Chi-a person's guardian and personal god according to Igbo spirituality. Okwute, which translates to stone or rock in the Igbo language, is a play about searching, self-discovery and realization. I hope you enjoy reading it!
Download or read book Asagba written by Ifeoha Azikiwe and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-08-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His life is eventful as it is remarkable. He is a legend, an icon of all ages, a visionary born with royal blood in his spine and silver spoon to scoop. At a time blacks were regarded as sub-human, he suffered racial prejudice in Europe. Back home as a university lecturer, he was placed on a miserable salary, 60% less than his foreign counterparts. He rejected the offer, but driven by patriotism, he worked assiduously for nine months without pay. And he won the battle. Professor Joseph Chike Edozien was implicated at the outset of the Nigerian civil war, targeted as a culprit but smuggled out through the rough terrain of the Camerouns to Paris, France. The war changed his focus and made him a refugee. However, he remained undaunted. His professorial portfolio at hand, Edozien proceeded to the prestigious MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. From there he moved to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Chike Edoziens educational attainments span through Africa, Europe, America and Asia with far-reaching global impact on humanity. The first Nigerian and African dean of the faculty of medicine, University of Ibadan, Edozien won international laurels in medical education and research, capped with a bibliography of 45 citations. And from the ivory towers of Chapel Hill, he ascended the coveted throne as the 13th Asagba of Asaba. The nonagenarian deprecates the vices that impede Nigerias greatness; the twin devil of bribery and corruption, tribalism, lack of national consciousness, over-concentration of power and resources at the centre, and above all, absence of true federalism. He paints a gloomy picture of a nation wallowing in utter backwardness, and regrets that we have lost our traditional values completely, with Christianity at the base of our collective ethical decadence.

Download or read book African Centered Education written by Kmt G. Shockley and published by Myers Education Press. This book was released on 2020-07-31 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together leading scholars and practitioners to address the theory and practice of African-centered education. The contributors provide (1) perspectives on the history, methods, successes and challenges of African-centered education, (2) discussions of the efforts that are being made to counter the miseducation of Black children, and (3) prescriptions for—and analyses of—the way forward for Black children and Black communities. The authors argue that Black children need an education that moves them toward leading and taking agency within their own communities. They address several areas that capture the essence of what African-centered education is, how it works, and why it is a critical imperative at this moment. Those areas include historical analyses of African-centered education; parental perspectives; strategies for working with Black children; African-centered culture, science and STEM; culturally responsive curriculum and instruction; and culturally responsive resources for teachers and school leaders.
