It is mountainous, thickly forested, nourished by massive rainfall, has massive rivers, has a diverse wildlife, inhabited a number of forest dwellers called tribes who cherished environmentalist ethos. The region has been experiencing environmental depletion which was a result of colonial policies, exploitation of its ecological and mineral resources, large scale trans-border immigration and settlement of people, establishment of the plantation industry through deforestation and the dependence of the dairy industry on grazing and other factors. This books depicts the precariousness of the environmental situation and traces the history and politics of such degeneration with a view to raise the consciousness of the people of the region towards their environment and save it from further aggravation.

Book Elementary Hydrology

Download or read book Elementary Hydrology written by Vijay P. Singh and published by Pearson. This book was released on 1992 with total page 1000 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students are exposed to hydrology for the first time primarily through this course, and students taking the course have not had an opportunity to be exposed to hydrologic jargon before. And, in most cases this course may be the only course the students may have in hydrology in their undergraduate schooling. Therefore, this hydrology course must be at an elementary level, present basic concepts of hydrology, and develop a flavor for application of hydrology to the solution of a range of environmental problems. It is these considerations that motivated the writing of this book.

Book excerpt: "Sacramento and the lower Sacramento Valley are blessed with a mild climate and an abundance of sunshine the year-round. The summers are virtually cloudless with warm, dry days and mild, pleasant nights. During the winter "rainy season" (November through February), over half the total annual precipitation falls, yet rain in measurable amounts occurs only about 10 days monthly during the winter. Mountains surround the Sacramento Valley to the west, north and east. The Sierra Nevada snowfields are only 70 miles east of Sacramento and usually provide a plentiful supply of water to the valley streams during the dry season. Because of the shielding influence of the high mountains, winter storms reach the valley in a modified form. However, torrential rain and heavy snow frequently fallen the western Sierra slopes, the southern Cascades, and to a lesser extent, the Coastal Range. As a result, flood conditions occasionally occur along the Sacramento River and its tributaries. Excessive rainfall and damaging wind storms are rare in the valley"--Page 1
