T-jump/FTIR spectroscopy and SMATCH/FTIR spectroscopy are new diagnostic techniques that were designed for this project. They enable a film of material to be heated at a high rate in such a manner as to simulate a thin volume element of the surface during combustion. The semiglobal thermal decomposition reactions and the first strongly exothermic secondary reaction of important oxidizers and monopropellants were identified. The compounds studied were nitramine (CL-20, HMX, RDX, DNNC), ammonium salts (AP, AN, ADN), and azide polymers (GAP, BAMO).

Book excerpt: The book is intended to serve as a primer to combustion. It has been the author's experience that too many scientists with interests in com bustion phenomena have very limited knowledge of the field as a whole. For example, many chemists who have acquired a deep understanding of the mechanism of branching-chain reactions in closed vessels are completely uninformed about the importance of such processes in flames or detonation waves. This is a severe limitation because the essential feature of all combustion phenomena is that they arise as a result of the interplay of physical and chemical processes and a complete understanding can result only if aspects of mechanical engineering and fluid mechanics are taken into account. The aim of this text is to provide the basic principles which form the background to all combustion phenomena. It is based on a course given to postgraduate students in chemistry at the University of Essex and it is the author's hope that it can be read by final-year undergraduates and research personnel in a wide range of disciplines. The major problem for the author has been that of selection. Because the book is intended to be short, many topics of interest have been omitted and, since decisions as to content have been entirely arbitrary, many readers will disagree with the choice. The author has tried to adhere to certain principles in making the selection.

Book excerpt: This research program was devoted to the study of high-nitrogen compounds that have been of worldwide interest as gas generators, explosives, and propellants. The focus was specifically on substituted tetrazole and furazan ring compounds. The Russian FLAME database reveals that many of these compounds have high burning rates. In the United States these compounds are of interest to AFRL, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the Thiokol Corporation as highly energetic materials. The research program required synthesis of most of the compounds, flash pyrolysis studies to identify and quantify the gaseous products, vibrational spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography to determine the structural details, and density functional theory computations. All of this work was aimed at fundamental understanding the energetic behavior of these compounds. The research program has resulted in the awarding of two M.S. degrees in chemistry, the submission of five manuscripts, and presentation of the work at several conferences.
