Download or read book Prostanoids and Drugs written by B. Samuelson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the sixth in the series "The Prostaglandin System" assembles most of the lecture notes from the International School of Pharmacology on "Prostanoids and Drugs" that took place in Erice, Sicily, at the "Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture" on Sept 5-15, 1989. The course, which was a NATO Advanced Study Institute, comprised detailed discussion of basic metabolic pathways of arachidonic acid as well as their location in the everyday practice of clinical medicine. The current status of our knowledge on drugs affecting prostanoid metabolic pathways, and/or their functinal effects, together with the use of prostanoids as drugs, has been reviewed in depth by distinguished experts. In certain instances a few chapters might overlap with others to present divergent viewpoints of authors, for a better assessment of the complexity of eicosanoid biology. It is likely that as our knowledge of prostanoids in different diseases increases, new diseases may also be targets for drugs related to these lipid mediators. We hope that this boo~will encourage basic scientists and clinicians to pursue additional biomedical investigations along these lines of inquiry. Moreover we would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all the invited speakers not only for their important contributions before and during the course but also for their ability in creating an atmosphere in which all questions were legitimate and all lines of investigations were encouraged.

  • Author : P. K. Moore
  • Publisher : CUP Archive
  • Release : 1985-12-12
  • ISBN : 9780521278270
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Prostanoids written by P. K. Moore and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1985-12-12 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prostanoids are a group of fat-soluble compounds synthesised by almost every cell in the human body, and they are essential to the proper functioning of the organs. Interruption to the constant rate of formation and release of prostanoids may cause life-threatening conditions to develop, for example a deficiency may exacerbate or cause strokes, heart disease, diabetes and an excess is implicated in arthritis. The interest in the structure and functions of prostanoids is great and much research effort has been spent on elucidating facts about them. This book makes explicit the present knowledge on the subject, and emphasises the pharmacology, physiology and relevance to clinical conditions. It offers those studying pharmacology and physiology, particularly in preclinical medical courses, an up-to-date summary of this exciting group of substances.

Book Prostaglandins Chemical and Biochemical Aspects

Download or read book Prostaglandins Chemical and Biochemical Aspects written by S. M. M. Karim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second in a series of three books on advances in prostaglandin research. In recent years there has been an unparalleled interest in these compounds and as a result a vast amount of research data has accumulated since the publication of my earlier book in 1972. At that time it was possible to present a fairly comprehensive review of the various aspects of prosta glandin research in one volume. This is no longer possible and the contents are divided into three volumes; the first one dealing with prostaglandins and reproduction was published in October 1975; the present volume dealing with chemical and biochemical aspects of prostaglandin research, to be published in April 1976 and the third book dealing with physiological, pharmacological and pathological aspects of prostaglandin research wiII be published in May 1976. The authorship represents international scientists consisting of physiolo-. gists, pharmacologists, chemists, biochemists, veterinary scientists and obstetrician gynaecologists actively engaged in different areas of prosta glandin research. An attempt has been made to provide a total coverage of advances relating to prostaglandins. For the sake of completeness and continuity, material covered in the 1972 book is either briefly summarised or reference made to that edition. In recent years there have been notable advances in the chemical and biochemical aspects of prostaglandin research and these are discussed by various authorities in the chapters that follow.

Book Prostaglandins and the Kidney

Download or read book Prostaglandins and the Kidney written by Michael Dunn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June, 1981, we conducted a two day international symposium in Rome devoted to original scientific presentations on arachidonic acid metabolism in the kidney. Scientists from 20 countries were represented either in the general scientific program or in the poster presentation. This book does not represent the proceedings of this international gathering, but rather the edited manuscripts specifically prepared as sum maries of the scientific presentations. We feel that the timeliness and originality of the contributions as well as the need for a compilation of existing work on prosta glandins, thromboxane, and the kidney warrant this publication. The meetings would have been impossible without the generous and substantial support of the Italian government, the National Institutes of Health, United States Public Health Service, and Merck Sharp & Dohme International. Supplementary support was also received from Ciba Geigy S. p. A., Ente Fiuggi, Farmitalia Carlo Erba S. p. A., Glaxo Laboratori S. p. A., Hoechst Italia S. p. A., Leo Pharmaceutical Products, Pfizer Italiana S. p. A., Sigm? Tau S. p. A., Squibb S. p. A., The Upjohn Company, Wellcome Italia S. p. A., and Burroughs Wellcome Company. The efficient organization of the symposium was largely attributable to the superb efforts of Elisabeth Mutschlechner and Miki Scarinci of C.K. International, Rome. Linda Goldberg provided expert and invaluable editorial and secretarial assistance in the organization of this book. The book is divided into four major sections comprising: I.

Book Prostaglandins Leukotrienes and Other Eicosanoids

Download or read book Prostaglandins Leukotrienes and Other Eicosanoids written by Friedrich Marks and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-11-21 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polyunsaturated fatty acids are essential for human cell metabolism. As precursors of a very large and extremely versatile family of signaling compounds they play a key role in intracellular communication. Eicosanoids constitute one of the most abundant and prominent subfamilies of these fatty acid derivatives which are formed primarily along oxidative pathways. Prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and related eicosanoids have a modulatory function in mammalian cells and are responsible for tissue responses such as inflammation or wound repair. Increasing activity in eicosanoid research sheds new light on today's most common diseases including atherosclerosis, cancer, Alzheimer's, allergies, and rheumatic diseases. The recent advances already have far-reaching implications in medicine. This detailed account, written by leading experts, covers the ground-breaking developments in recent eicosanoid research. The topics span eicosanoid biogenesis, new aspects of their pathophysiology, for example their influence on the cardiovascular system, as well as the clinical application of synthetic eicosanoids and their antagonists. Researchers and students working in biochemistry or in pharmaceutical, physiological, medicinal and neurochemistry will value this informative introduction to one of the most rapidly developing fields in cell biology.

Book Prostaglandins in Cancer Research

Download or read book Prostaglandins in Cancer Research written by Enrico Garaci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arachidonic acid metabolites are known to playa regulatory role in a number of biological systems, in which they function as microenviron mental hormones and intracellular signal mediators. One of the most exciting areas of research of these compounds is the one that studies the relationship between prostaglandins and tumor cell growth and function. In the last few years there has been an extraordinary evolution of data on prostaglandins (and related compounds) and cancer. This vol ume is based on papers presented at the 1986 International Confer ence on Prostaglandins and Cancer organized by the Italian National Research Council and the II University of Rome, and held in Rome, Italy, in June, 1986. This Conference brought together oncologists and specialists in the areas of prostaglandin chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology, cellular and molecular biology to overview the actual state of knowledge on the role of eicosanoids in cancer and to focus on the key questions that need to be answered. The picture that comes out of this book describes a very complicated network of interactions between arachidonic acid metabolites and different as pects of the complex phenomenon "cancer". Eicosanoids participate in carcinogenesis initiation and promotion, and their relationship with tumor promoters and growth factors is well established. During cancer growth, different prostaglandins can have different roles in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation and in metastasis formation; meanwhile evidence is accumulating for a pos sible use of some of these compounds as antineoplastic agents.
