Book Chemistry in America 1876 1976

Download or read book Chemistry in America 1876 1976 written by A. Thackray and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an outgrowth of our interest in the history of modern chemistry. The paucity of reliable, quantitative knowledge about past science was brought home forcibly to us when we undertook a research seminar in the comparative history of modern chemistry in Britain, Germany, and the United States. That seminar, which took place at the University of Pennsylvania in the spring of 1975, was paralleled by one devoted to the work of the "Annales School". The two seminars together catalyzed the attempt to construct historical measures of change in aspects of one science, or "chem ical indicators". The present volume displays our results. Perhaps our labors may be most usefully compared with the work of those students of medieval science who devote their best efforts to the establish ment of texts. Only when acceptable texts have been constructed from fragmentary and corrupt sources can scholars move on to the more satisfying business of making history. So too in the modern period, a necessary pre liminary to the full history of any scientific profession is the establishing of reliable quantitative information in the form of statistical series. This volume does not offer history. Instead it provides certain element- indicators -- that may be useful to individuals interested in the history of American chemistry and chemical industry, and suggestive for policy.

Book The Public Image of Chemistry

Download or read book The Public Image of Chemistry written by Joachim Schummer and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stem cells have the ability to differentiate into cells that are found throughout the body. This fundamental property of stem cells suggests that they can potentially be used to replace degenerative cells within the body, and regenerate the functional capacity of organ systems that have deteriorated because of disease or aging. This authoritative textbook provides an overview of the latest advances in the field of stem cell biology, spanning topics that include nuclear reprogramming, somatic cell cloning, and determinants of cell fate; embryonic stem cells for hematopoietic and pancreatic repair; adult stem cells for cardiovascular, neural, renal, and hepatic repair; and manufacturing of stem cells for clinical use.

Book Nobel Lectures in Chemistry 2006 2010

Download or read book Nobel Lectures in Chemistry 2006 2010 written by Bengt Nordén and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mentioned as the second prize area in his will, Chemistry was the most important science for Alfred Nobel's own work. The development of Nobel's inventions as well as the industrial processes he employed were based upon chemical knowledge. This volume is a collection of the Nobel lectures delivered by the prizewinners, together with their biographies and the presentation speeches for the period 2006 2010. Each Nobel lecture is based on the work for which the laureate was awarded the prize. List of prizewinners and their award citations: (2006) Roger D Kornberg for his studies of the molecular basis of eukaryotic transcription; (2007) Gerhard Ertl for his studies of chemical processes on solid surfaces; (2008) Osamu Shimomura, Martin Chalfie and Roger Y Tsien for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein, GFP; (2009) Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas A Steitz and Ada E Yonath for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome; (2010) Richard F Heck, Ei-ichi Negishi and Akira Suzuki for palladium-catalyzed cross couplings in organic synthesis.

Book Stabilizers for Photographic Silver Halide Emulsions Progress in Chemistry and Application

Download or read book Stabilizers for Photographic Silver Halide Emulsions Progress in Chemistry and Application written by Gunther Fischer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability is one of the most important performances required for silver halide photographic materials. In 1935, Dr. E. 1. Birr introduced the concept of the stabilization ofphotographic emulsions for the first time by inventing a most effective stabilizer, 4-oxo-6-methyl-l,3,3a,7-tetraazaindene (TAl). Dr. Birr's monograph Stabilization ofPhotographic Silver Halide Emulsions was published in 1974,and accepted as a reliable reference book by many photographic scientists and engineers. Since then, silver halide photographic materials have been greatly improved and expanded through active and continual development of various kinds of technologies. Especially, extensive efforts have been made to develop photographic materials with high sensitivity and rapid processing, which rely upon the stability ofphotographic emulsions under various conditions. Thus, the concept and technologies of stabilization ofphotographic silver halide materials have been expanded so extensively that many photographic scientists and engineers eagerly want a reliable, new reference book on the stabilization of photographic emulsions. Dr. Gunther Fischer is one of the most experienced and eminent scientists and engineers in the field of the stabilization of photographic materials with expanded concept. He has been involved in research on the stabilization of pho tographic emulsions since 1964 when he joined the Technical Scientific Laboratory in the Research and Development Department of the Photo Film Company Agfa Wolfen formerly headed by Dr. Birr, whom he succeeded in that position. I was deeply impressed by his fruitful and elaborate achievements in these fields.
