Download or read book Sulfur Reduction of Illinois Coals Vol 1 written by Roy John Helfinstine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sulfur Reduction of Illinois Coals, Vol. 1: Washability Studies The potential reduction in sulfur (and ash) that can be obtained with a coal can be determined by making float - and sink (washability) tests with the coal in a laboratory. As described in more detail later in this report, this process is essentially one of determining the weight percentages and chemical compositions of the material that is collected from liquid baths of different specific gravities The percentage of coal that floats is commonly called recovery, and the mater ial that sinks is often called reject. A commercial preparation plant cannot provide as precise a separation of float - and sink products as that obtained in the laboratory. Book Specific Gravity Studies of Illinois Coal Classic Reprint

Download or read book Specific Gravity Studies of Illinois Coal Classic Reprint written by Merle L. Nebel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specific Gravity Studies of Illinois Coal The Object of this bulletin is to present the results of a study of (1) the effect of moisture upon the specific gravity of coal, and (2) the methods of determining the specific gravity of coal. The commercial aspects of the problem are discussed, and values are given for the specific gravity of coal from many of the mining districts of the State of Illinois. The specific gravity of bright and dull coal is also considered. The investigation was carried on under the direction of Professor H. H. Stock of the University of Illinois, who suggested the problem and whose advice and criticism were of great value. Experiments were conducted in the laboratories of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois, and field trips were made to the Vermilion county coal field, where samples of coal were collected from a number of mines. Other samples were obtained from various sources. The author is indebted to Professor E. A. Holbrook of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois for assistance in securing sam ples of coal and for valuable suggestions and criticisms during the prog ress of the work; and also to Professor S. W. Parr of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Illinois, and Mr. Fred H. Kay, of the Illinois State Geological Survey, for advice. Book Fuel Tests With Illinois Coals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fuel Tests With Illinois Coals Classic Reprint written by L. P. Breckenridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fuel Tests With Illinois Coals The Work of the department of Applied Chemistry has not only supplemented the work relating to boiler trials by furnish ing the composition and heating value of the coals used in these trials, but it has also examined and tested a large number of Illi nois coals not yet tested under boilers. In connection with this subject this department has perfected several new devices very useful to chemists and engineers, designed for making the ordin ary determinations of the heating values and composition of coals. The Parr calorimeter, one of these devices, has found ready sale among the operators of many of the power plants of the country as well as among the consulting chemists and fuel experts. It is expected that a separate bulletin will soon be published setting forth in detail many of the new methods which have been devel oped by this department, and giving the complete results of its investigations relating to Illinois coals. It is hoped that the tables of the Chemical composition and heating values of Illinois coals, which form a part of this bulletin, will furnish engineers and manufacturers with useful information in this important field. With the above somewhat general statement in explanation of the character of this bulletin, it may now be advisable to refer more in detail to the special features which are intended to be brought out in the following pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tests of Washed Grades of Illinois Coal The stratigraphy of the seam mined in Vermilion county has been questioned for various technical reasons. The same seam characteristics as are found in Seam No. 7 mined in Williamson, Franklin and Jackson counties are, however, present, although the chemical properties of coals from the two seams show sharp differentiations. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Survey of the Coking Properties of Illinois Coals Illinois coals from all the mining areas and all the commercially mined seams in the state have been evaluated for their ability to produce both chemical and metallurgical coke. They have been coked both by themselves and in blends, and it has been found that many of these coals that are not suitable for metallurgical coke because of their ash and sulfur content might be used to produce chemical coke where these impurities are not too critical. Book An Engineering Study of the Coals on the Chicago Market Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Engineering Study of the Coals on the Chicago Market The samples of coal for analysis were very kindly presented to the writer by the City Vuel Co., since purchased by the Peabody Coal Co., whose yards are located at Wentworth Avenue and 4oth Street., Chicago. The samples were takeh from the different coal piles around the yards one warm day in February and were quite wet from.the melted snow so that it was thought advisable to allow them to stand for a couple of Weeks before grinding for analysis, in order that any undue moisture Which might have been absorbed by the coal during its exposure to the snow and water, might dry out normally. Although it is preferable to take large samples and quarter them down to the amount desired for analysis, it was not done in this case owing to lack of working and storage space. However, two or three small lumps having as near the average composition of the pile as c uld be told by inspection, were taken, and the state and district from which each.coal came noted. The most of the sawples taken came from Illinois, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, in Which states, by the way, the largest share of the coal of t the United States is mined. In 1900, Pennsylvania ranked first in coal production, Illinois second, and West Virginia third. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition of the Ash of Illinois Coals Table 1 is a tabulation of analyses and sample descriptions assembled from the analytical files of the Survey. The table is arranged by the counties from which the coal samples were collected. Where available, analyses of ashes from face samples are shown first, followed by analyses of various prepared products. Since the analyses for each county represent samples of coals of different size, gravity, etc. And since coal preparation influences the ash composition, it is not possible to arrive at reliable county averages. Download or read book Stockpiling Illinois Coal for Coke Classic Reprint written by Harold Wesley Jackman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stockpiling Illinois Coal for Coke A critical study of the weathering tests made it apparent that the production of unsatisfactory coke was related closely to reduction in fluidity of the coal blend being coked. It occurred to us that if Illinois coal were to be blended with coals of higher fluidity than the Pocahontas. No. 3, the blend might retain sufficient fluidity to produce good coke even after the Illinois coal had started to weather.
