Book Chebyshev Type Quadrature and Zeros of Faber Polynomials

Download or read book Chebyshev Type Quadrature and Zeros of Faber Polynomials written by Arnoldus Bernardus Jacobus Kuijlaars and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "To any probability measure [mu] on [-1,1] we associate a sequence of polynomials F[subscript n](z) which are Faber polynomials of a univalent function F(z) on [absolute value of z]> 1. If the zeros of F[subscript n](z) are in [absolute value of z] 1 then there exists a Chebyshev type quadrature formula [formula] which is exact for all polynomials f(t) up to degree n-1. For the Jacobi measures [formula] the function F(z) can be expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions. Using this expression it is proved that the zeros of the associated Faber polynomials are in [absolute value of z]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every book on numerical analysis covers methods for the approximate calculation of definite integrals. The authors of this book provide a complementary treatment of the topic by presenting a coherent theory of quadrature methods that encompasses many deep and elegant results as well as a large number of interesting (solved and open) problems. The inclusion of the word ``theory'' in the title highlights the authors' emphasis on analytical questions, such as the existence and structure of quadrature methods and selection criteria based on strict error bounds for quadrature rules. Systematic analyses of this kind rely on certain properties of the integrand, called ``co-observations,'' which form the central organizing principle for the authors' theory, and distinguish their book from other texts on numerical integration. A wide variety of co-observations are examined, as a detailed understanding of these is useful for solving problems in practical contexts. While quadrature theory is often viewed as a branch of numerical analysis, its influence extends much further. It has been the starting point of many far-reaching generalizations in various directions, as well as a testing ground for new ideas and concepts. The material in this book should be accessible to anyone who has taken the standard undergraduate courses in linear algebra, advanced calculus, and real analysis.

Book Chebyshev type Quadrature on Multidimensional Domains

Download or read book Chebyshev type Quadrature on Multidimensional Domains written by Jacob Korevaar and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "Quadrature formulas with equal coefficients for interval and circle are combined to obtain Chebyshev-type quadrature formulas (relative to ordinary area or volume measure) for 'product domains'. Upper bounds for the minimal number N = N(p) of nodes required for polynomial exactness to degree p readily follow. Lower bounds are obtained by projecting onto certain subsets of lower dimension and other means. The precise order of N(p) is determined for square, cube, cylindrical surface, disc and cylinder, while upper and lower bounds for the order are found for sphere and ball. Improving recent results of Bajnok and Rabau, the authors describe so-called spherical t-designs (Chebyshev-type quadrature formulas of degree t for the sphere with distinct nodes) consisting of O(t3) points."

Book Theory of Birkhoff Interpolation

Download or read book Theory of Birkhoff Interpolation written by Ying Guang Shi and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpolation by polynomials is a very old subject. The first systematic work was due to Newton in the seventeenth century. Lagrange developed his formula only a little later. In 1878 Hermie introduced so called Hermite interpolation. In 1906 Birkhoff published the first paper on lacunary (or Birkhoff) interpolation whose information about a function and its derivatives is irregular. It turns out that the Birkhoff interpolation problem is very difficult. The reasons are: the solvability of the problem is equivalent to non-singularity of the coefficient matrix of higher order, which of course is not easy to determine in general; should the solvability of the problem be known, it is difficult to get an explicit representation of the solution; although an explicit representation of the solution in some special cases can be acquired, it is usually complicated and is hard to study. This book is largely self-contained. It begins with the definitions and elementary properties of Birkhoff interpolation, to be followed by the formulating of the fundamental theorems for regularity and comparison theorems; also investigated are fundamental polynomials of interpolation in details. Interpolation follow.

Book Encyclopaedia of Mathematics

Download or read book Encyclopaedia of Mathematics written by Michiel Hazewinkel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 743 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.

Book Approximation Theory and Approximation Practice Extended Edition

Download or read book Approximation Theory and Approximation Practice Extended Edition written by Lloyd N. Trefethen and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a textbook on classical polynomial and rational approximation theory for the twenty-first century. Aimed at advanced undergraduates and graduate students across all of applied mathematics, it uses MATLAB to teach the field’s most important ideas and results. Approximation Theory and Approximation Practice, Extended Edition differs fundamentally from other works on approximation theory in a number of ways: its emphasis is on topics close to numerical algorithms; concepts are illustrated with Chebfun; and each chapter is a PUBLISHable MATLAB M-file, available online. The book centers on theorems and methods for analytic functions, which appear so often in applications, rather than on functions at the edge of discontinuity with their seductive theoretical challenges. Original sources are cited rather than textbooks, and each item in the bibliography is accompanied by an editorial comment. In addition, each chapter has a collection of exercises, which span a wide range from mathematical theory to Chebfun-based numerical experimentation. This textbook is appropriate for advanced undergraduate or graduate students who have an understanding of numerical analysis and complex analysis. It is also appropriate for seasoned mathematicians who use MATLAB.

Book Chebyshev type Quadrature for Analytic Weights on the Circle and the Interval

Download or read book Chebyshev type Quadrature for Analytic Weights on the Circle and the Interval written by Arnoldus Bernardus Jacobus Kuijlaars and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "We give a sharp asymptotic bound on the number of nodes needed for Chebyshev-type (= equal weight) quadrature of degree p for measures on [-1,1] of the form w(t)/([pi square root of 1-t2])dt, where w is positive on [-1,1] and analytic in a neighborhood of [-1,1]. This bound is derived from a corresponding bound for Chebyshev-type quadrature for analytic weights on the unit circle. In addition, we present some results on Chebyshev-type quadrature on certain algebraic curves."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polynomials are useful mathematical tools. They are simply defined and can be calculated quickly on computer systems. They can be differentiated and integrated easily and can be pieced together to form spline curves. After Weierstrass approximation Theorem, polynomial sequences have acquired considerable importance not only in the various branches of Mathematics, but also in Physics, Chemistry and Engineering disciplines. There is a wide literature on specific polynomial sequences. But there is no literature that attempts a systematic exposition of the main basic methods for the study of a generic polynomial sequence and, at the same time, gives an overview of the main polynomial classes and related applications, at least in numerical analysis. In this book, through an elementary matrix calculus-based approach, an attempt is made to fill this gap by exposing dated and very recent results, both theoretical and applied.

Book Multivariate Approximation and Splines

Download or read book Multivariate Approximation and Splines written by Günther Nürnberger and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the refereed papers which were presented at the interna tional conference on "Multivariate Approximation and Splines" held in Mannheim, Germany, on September 7-10,1996. Fifty experts from Bulgaria, England, France, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Switzerland, Ukraine, USA and Germany participated in the symposium. It was the aim of the conference to give an overview of recent developments in multivariate approximation with special emphasis on spline methods. The field is characterized by rapidly developing branches such as approximation, data fit ting, interpolation, splines, radial basis functions, neural networks, computer aided design methods, subdivision algorithms and wavelets. The research has applications in areas like industrial production, visualization, pattern recognition, image and signal processing, cognitive systems and modeling in geology, physics, biology and medicine. In the following, we briefly describe the contents of the papers. Exact inequalities of Kolmogorov type which estimate the derivatives of mul the paper of BABENKO, KOFANovand tivariate periodic functions are derived in PICHUGOV. These inequalities are applied to the approximation of classes of mul tivariate periodic functions and to the approximation by quasi-polynomials. BAINOV, DISHLIEV and HRISTOVA investigate initial value problems for non linear impulse differential-difference equations which have many applications in simulating real processes. By applying iterative techniques, sequences of lower and upper solutions are constructed which converge to a solution of the initial value problem.
