Book Cheat Mountain Or Unwritten Chapter of the Late War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cheat Mountain Or Unwritten Chapter of the Late War Classic Reprint written by Joseph G. Carrigan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cheat Mountain, or Unwritten Chapter of the Late War Perhaps no greater injustice has been clone to any portion of the Confederate troops than to the officers and men composing the Eighth and Sixteenth Regiments of Tennessee Infantry, by writers of Confederate history, in failing to recite their memorable campaign in the mountains of Northwestern Virginia, in the fall and winter of 1861. The long silence of history, whatever may have been the cause, has induced the writer to make an effort to rescue from oblivion the heroic deeds and sufferings of those noble men. It may be true, however, that the real and true facts connected with this particular campaign or service have never been told, and hence the whole chapter, to call it such, is about to pass away unnoticed and unwritten. Over twenty-four years have now passed away since these two regiments made one of the most wonderful and daring campaigns over those mountains ever made by any troops in this or any other country. The soldiers who engaged or participated in these marches and great hardships are rapidly passing away, falling one by one, until but few remain to bear testimony to the sufferings endured by them and their comrades during their eventful struggles on Cheat Mountain. Book excerpt: “In all the vast collection of books on the American Civil War there is no book like this one,” says Bruce Catton. Never before has such a stunning body of facts dealing with the war been gathered together in one place and presented in a coherent, useful, day-by-day narrative. And never before have statistics revealed human suffering of such heroic and tragic magnitude. The text begins in November, 1860, and ends with the conclusion of hostilities in May, 1865, and the start of reconstruction. It is designed to furnish the reader not only with information, but to tell a story. Here, in addition to the momentous events that are a familiar part of our history, the daily entries recount innumerable lesser military actions as well as some of the other activities and thoughts of men great and unknown engaged in America’s most costly war: · May 5, 1864—a private in the Army of Northern Virginia writes at the beginning of the Battle of the Wilderness, “It is a beautiful spring day on which all this bloody work is being done.” · May 6, 1864—Gen. Lee rides among his men and is shouted to the rear by his protective troops. · April 30, 1864—Joe David, five-year-old son of the Confederate President, dies after a fall from the high veranda of the White House in Richmond. · April 14, 1865—President Lincoln’s busy day includes a Cabinet meeting where he tells of his recurring dream of a ship moving with great rapidity toward a dark and indefinite shore; that night Mr. Lincoln attends a performance of a trifling comedy at Ford’s Theatre, “Our American Cousin”.

Book Robert E Lee

Download or read book Robert E Lee written by Ron Field and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-20 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beloved by his soldiers and respected by his enemies, Robert E. Lee is undoubtedly the most popular general in American history to fight on the losing side. This book takes an in-depth look at this southern gentleman as a strategist and a tactician, covering all of his most important victories and defeats. Although courted by Lincoln, Robert E. Lee could not fight against his native Virginia and joined the Confederacy. After assuming command of the Army of Northern Virginia, Lee ran off a string of shocking victories that left the North reeling. However, on two separate occasions, Lee led invasions into the North and both ended in defeat, first at Antietam and then at Gettysburg. Encompassing the huge body of research surrounding General Lee and presenting it with numerous photographs and newly commissioned artwork, this book provides a complete understanding of Lee as a battlefield commander.
