Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Happy Holidays! We say Merry Christmas in our home and office, but we recognize that not everyone celebrates the same way. We hope whatever holiday you celebrate, you will enjoy it! With that said, we have a number of selections in our holiday issue. LeRue Press, in October, November and December is releasing a number of new titles. It kept us hopping these last few months. Don’t miss our backlist titles too. They are still as good as ever. We want to give thanks this holiday season to our veterans without whom we could not celebrate the freedom of the press and our many other freedoms in our world. We need to do our due diligence to keep those freedoms; Washington and power can get out of hand; it’s up to us, the people, to keep them in check. Off my soapbox now, our 4th Annual Book Blast is November 16th. If you’re reading this after that date, don’t fret, we’ll have another one in 2014 in November. Sean Savoy will be in attendance. He has a great follow up to our September issue about Banned Books Week in this issue (p.4). Ken Roberts always keeps us up to date on the stock market. You can read his column on page 5. Check out the upcoming workshops we’re presenting (p. 19) for consumers (automotive), business (motivational) and authors (all the how to’s you could need to know). Read about books, music, movies, art and more in each issue of The LeRue Review. Till next month...Keep reading and writing! -Janice Hermsen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the great rush was on to find the mother lode. Was it gold? The federal government offered a bonus reward of $10,000 for anyone finding ten tons of ore containing 10% uranium oxide or U308. The quest for uranium deposits expanded into many areas of the western United States. Weekend prospectors using their Geiger Muller counters were seen in almost any geologic environment. One prospector, Neil E. McNeice, spotted a rusty colored hill and decided to check it with his "counter" for any radiation. After changing the batteries in his counter because it showed radiation on the entire hillside, McNeice and the Lucky MC became a part of history.

Download or read book Hubris written by Michael Isikoff and published by Crown. This book was released on 2007-05-29 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real story behind the investigation of Iraq, and the basis for the MSNBC documentary of the same name hosted by Rachel Maddow Filled with news-making revelations that made it a New York Times bestseller, Hubris takes us behind the scenes at the White House, CIA, Pentagon, State Department, and Congress to show how George W. Bush came to invade Iraq--and how his administration struggled with the devastating fallout. Hubris connects the dots between Bush's expletive-laden outbursts at Saddam Hussein, the bitter battles between the CIA and the White House, the fights within the intelligence community over Saddam's supposed weapons of mass destruction, the outing of an undercover CIA officer, and the Bush administration's misleading sales campaign for war. Written by veteran reporters Michael Isikoff and David Corn, this is an inside look at how a president took the nation to war using faulty and fraudulent intelligence. It's a dramatic page-turner and an intriguing account of conspiracy, backstabbing, bureaucratic ineptitude, journalistic malfeasance, and arrogance.

Download or read book Hidden Costs of Energy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-05-26 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the many benefits of energy, most of which are reflected in energy market prices, the production, distribution, and use of energy causes negative effects. Many of these negative effects are not reflected in energy market prices. When market failures like this occur, there may be a case for government interventions in the form of regulations, taxes, fees, tradable permits, or other instruments that will motivate recognition of these external or hidden costs. The Hidden Costs of Energy defines and evaluates key external costs and benefits that are associated with the production, distribution, and use of energy, but are not reflected in market prices. The damage estimates presented are substantial and reflect damages from air pollution associated with electricity generation, motor vehicle transportation, and heat generation. The book also considers other effects not quantified in dollar amounts, such as damages from climate change, effects of some air pollutants such as mercury, and risks to national security. While not a comprehensive guide to policy, this analysis indicates that major initiatives to further reduce other emissions, improve energy efficiency, or shift to a cleaner electricity generating mix could substantially reduce the damages of external effects. A first step in minimizing the adverse consequences of new energy technologies is to better understand these external effects and damages. The Hidden Costs of Energy will therefore be a vital informational tool for government policy makers, scientists, and economists in even the earliest stages of research and development on energy technologies.
