Book excerpt: Space missions in the movies can seem elegant and straight-forward. Most are anything but! This book takes a personal journey into the labyrinth that a space-mission concept must travel through before a mission blasts off into deep space. Here is the story of the Rossi X ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), an Earth-orbiting NASA observatory meant to study X-ray emitting celestial objects. The technical and bureaucratic hurdles facing this mission are described with humor and wry personal anecdotes. And the pay-off? Sixteen years of successful observations resulting in critical new insight into black holes and neutron stars.

Book The Little Book of Black Holes

Download or read book The Little Book of Black Holes written by Steven S. Gubser and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dive into a mind-bending exploration of the physics of black holes Black holes, predicted by Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity more than a century ago, have long intrigued scientists and the public with their bizarre and fantastical properties. Although Einstein understood that black holes were mathematical solutions to his equations, he never accepted their physical reality—a viewpoint many shared. This all changed in the 1960s and 1970s, when a deeper conceptual understanding of black holes developed just as new observations revealed the existence of quasars and X-ray binary star systems, whose mysterious properties could be explained by the presence of black holes. Black holes have since been the subject of intense research—and the physics governing how they behave and affect their surroundings is stranger and more mind-bending than any fiction. After introducing the basics of the special and general theories of relativity, this book describes black holes both as astrophysical objects and theoretical “laboratories” in which physicists can test their understanding of gravitational, quantum, and thermal physics. From Schwarzschild black holes to rotating and colliding black holes, and from gravitational radiation to Hawking radiation and information loss, Steven Gubser and Frans Pretorius use creative thought experiments and analogies to explain their subject accessibly. They also describe the decades-long quest to observe the universe in gravitational waves, which recently resulted in the LIGO observatories’ detection of the distinctive gravitational wave “chirp” of two colliding black holes—the first direct observation of black holes’ existence. The Little Book of Black Holes takes readers deep into the mysterious heart of the subject, offering rare clarity of insight into the physics that makes black holes simple yet destructive manifestations of geometric destiny.

Book Black Hole Chasers

Download or read book Black Hole Chasers written by Anna Crowley Redding and published by Feiwel & Friends. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Black Hole Chasers, award-winning investigative journalist Anna Crowley Redding presents the riveting true story of one of the most inspiring scientific breakthroughs of our lifetime—the Event Horizon Telescope team's reveal of the first image of a super massive black hole. In April 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope Team unveiled the first ever image of a super massive black hole. This inspiring scientific breakthrough took years of hard work, innovative thinking, and a level of global cooperation never seen before. The challenge was immense. The goal was impossible. They would need a telescope as big as the earth itself. The technology simply didn’t exist. And yet, a multi-national team of scientists was able to show the world an image of something previously unseeable. Based off extensive research and hours interviews with many of the team's ground-breaking scientist, physicists, and mathematicians, Black Hole Chasers is a story of unique technological innovation and scientific breakthroughs, but more importantly, it's a story of human curiosity and triumph.

Book The Chase for Zero Gravity

Download or read book The Chase for Zero Gravity written by Rolf Sjöström and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, an explanation is provided to the driving force behind the four natural forces; gravitational force, magnetism, and the two types of intra-atomic nuclear forces. The consistent and coherent theory, sought by scientists working on the field, paves also the way to a logical explanation for the forces behind electricity, and for those we call for chemical bonds. In the latter, an explanation to something that controls the formation of all molecules - why atoms try to have 8 electrons on their outer shell - is provided. Because everything is "connected", we get also an explanation to phenomena, such as the tunnel effect, Cooper pair, superconductor and super liquid are. In addition, the book shows that the photon does not exist, and further, that is does not need to exist to explain changes in an atom's weight observed upon fusions/fissions. And the cosmic background radiation - despite all the fancy details scientific research has given us - is nothing but waves and noise from the Ocean of Strings. It is this Ocean, together with islands of stars and planets, that forms our Universe. See and understand the comprehensive picture of the reality. The book presents a clear and well-defined picture where all the puzzle pieces find their place. A picture, of which only parts of the outside have been revealed so far with the help of mathematical formulas, figures and graphs based on, among others, Lorentz's factor - a factor that according to the book should have never been given a stage. The photon does not exit, The Big Bang never happened, And the Emperor does, indeed, have no new clothes.

Book Black Holes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Derek J. Raine
  • Publisher : Imperial College Press
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 1848163827
  • Pages : 211 pages

Download or read book Black Holes written by Derek J. Raine and published by Imperial College Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to the fascinating subject of black holes fills a significant gap in the literature which exists between popular, non-mathematical expositions and advanced textbooks at the research level. It is designed for advanced undergraduates and first year postgraduates as a useful stepping-stone to the advanced literature. The book provides an accessible introduction to the exact solutions of Einstein's vacuum field equations describing spherical and axisymmetric (rotating) black holes. The geometry and physical properties of these spacetimes are explored through the motion of particles and light. The use of different coordinate systems, maximal extensions and Penrose diagrams is explained. The association of the surface area of a black hole with its entropy is discussed and it is shown that with the introduction of quantum mechanics black holes cease to be black and can radiate. This result allows black holes to satisfy the laws of thermodynamics and thus be consistent with the rest of physics. In this new edition the problems in each chapter have been revised and solutions are provided. The text has been expanded to include new material on wormholes and clarify various other issues.

Book Black Hole Survival Guide

Download or read book Black Hole Survival Guide written by Janna Levin and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Black Hole Blues and Other Songs from Outer Space—an authoritative and accessible guide to the most alluring and challenging phenomena of contemporary science. "[Levin will] take you on a safe black hole trip, an exciting travel story enjoyed from your chair’s event horizon.” —Boston Globe Through her writing, astrophysicist Janna Levin has focused on making the science she studies not just comprehensible but also, and perhaps more important, intriguing to the nonscientist. In this book, she helps us to understand and find delight in the black hole—perhaps the most opaque theoretical construct ever imagined by physicists—illustrated with original artwork by American painter and photographer Lia Halloran. Levin takes us on an evocative exploration of black holes, provoking us to imagine the visceral experience of a black hole encounter. She reveals the influence of black holes as they populate the universe, sculpt galaxies, and even infuse the whole expanse of reality that we inhabit. Lively, engaging, and utterly unique, Black Hole Survival Guide is not just informative—it is, as well, a wonderful read from first to last.
