Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stricken with a lifelong obsession for offshore fishing, Jeff Nichols had been running part-time charters out of Montauk Harbor, once dubbed "the sport fishing capital of the world," for ten years with mediocre results. Most of the time, he just brought friends out and considered a trip successful if the customers didn't stiff him, walk off with his rods and reels, or puke all over him. He bought cheap, remarkably unsafe boats, and so as to not piss off the other charter boat captains, named his operation Second Choice Charters. Then he started a Groupon campaign to boost his modest, if not pathetic, business. The Groupon campaign worked amazingly well, and Jeff quickly became one of the busiest captains in Montauk, sailing twice a day all week long. But unbeknownst to his customers, he was ill-prepared and grossly underqualified for the job despite being a USCG-licensed captain, not to mention that his boats were filthy and not exactly seaworthy. The results were horrific. In the notoriously dangerous waters off Montauk Point, Jeff's escapades resulted in seven Mayday calls and six documented Coast Guard rescues at sea (one including a helicopter). Even though his adventures are sometimes comical, he quickly realizes they are also cautionary tales. Not everyone should be a captain, and the "6 pack captain's license" in the wrong hands can be a license to kill. Jeff Nichols's first book, Trainwreck: My Life as an Idoit, was made into a movie by Lions Gate Films under the title, American Loser, and his second book, Caught, is an eye-opening account of the black market striped bass industry. Jeff has written over the years for Penthouse, the New York Post, Easthampton Star, and Dans Papers. He now runs the Montauk marine septic boat and monitors Channel 73.

Book High Seas Wranglers

Download or read book High Seas Wranglers written by Terry L. Howard and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raw, gritty, rich, and captivating, the stories in this book will astonish you. High Seas Wranglers presents real scenes from the lives of some of Florida's best-known commercial and charter fishing captains. Through Terry Howard's interviews, Captains Tristram Colket, A. J. Brown, Ray Perez, Glenn Cameron, and George Kaul tell true stories about hunting swordfish, kingfish, sharks, tuna, and billfish. They describe falling overboard alone many miles offshore, riding out deadly storms, navigating angry east coast inlets, orchestrating dangerous rescues at sea, struggling to land huge fish, playing pranks on other captains, and how they ended up living the lives that some only dream of. These fishermen have long been a part of the maritime life and culture of Florida, but today their livelihood is challenged and their industry fading. In this book, you'll hear in their own words the reasons they've chosen a life away from land, as well as their opinions about drift nets and falling fish populations. Their firsthand accounts of commercial handline mackerel fishing, commercial longline swordfish and shark fishing, and the growth of charter fishing on Florida’s eastern seaboard provide insights into a fascinating world. Gutsy fishing exploits like the ones in High Seas Wranglers are usually passed down through storytelling alone. This book preserves a thrilling history that would otherwise be lost.

Book excerpt: Did you know that a USCG license is required in order to legally carry passengers for hire? This includes charters for: * Fishing * Sightseeing * Diving * Transportation * Teaching * Eco-Tours etc... i.e. any use which is considered a "passenger for hire" situation. Many maritime companies now require them for boat deliveries and marine transportation. These are all good reasons to maintain your own seafarers maritime log book. How much documented "service on the water time" must you have to qualify for the different types of USCG licenses? 360 days for OUPV and 720 days for Master class, both of which require at least 90 days within the last 3 years. This log book will help you document your sea time in an organized and compact form. USCG Captains'' License Information OUPV INLAND (6 PAK) Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel * A minimum of 360 days on the water experience from age 16 years to present is required. * 90 of those 360 days must be within the most recent 3 years on a power or sail vessel over 16 feet in length. OUPV NEAR COASTAL (6 PAK) Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel * These requirements are the same as those for the Master Inland/OUPV Near Coastal Endorsement License. * A minimum of 360 days on the water experience from age 16 years to present is required. * 90 of those 360 days must be within the most recent 3 years on a power or sail vessel over 16 feet in length. * 90 of those 360 days must be on waters outside the boundary lines established by the US Coast Guard. MASTER INLAND (25, 50 OR 100 GROSS TON) / OUPV ENDORSEMENT * These requirements are the same as those of the OUPV Near Coastal License. MASTER INLAND (25, 50 OR 100 GROSS TON) / MATE NEAR COASTAL ENDORSEMENT * A minimum of 360 days on the water experience from age 16 years to present is required. * 90 of those 360 days must be within the most recent 3 years on a power or sail vessel over 16 feet in length. * 180 of those 360 days must be on waters outside the boundary lines established by the US Coast Guard. MASTER NEAR COASTAL (25, 50 OR 100 TON) * A minimum of 720 days on the water experience from age 16 to present is required. * 90 of those 720 days must be within the most recent 3 years on a similar size vessel to the license you are applying for. * 360 days of those 720 days must be on waters outside the boundary lines established by the US Coast Guard. * You will also need a TWIC Card How do I prove my time on the water to meet the US Coast Guard requirements? Most recreational boaters do not maintain log books. As such, the Sea Service forms which are included in the USCG application package must be filled out by hand. This form consists of twelve boxes, one for each month of the year. Starting with the most recent year, you fill in the number of days you can best recall being on the water and then go backward in time to the age of 16 years old, or until the sea time requirements have been met. This time is then supported by proof of ownership of the vessel, if you are claiming time on your own boat. If you claim time on someone else''s boat, then they must sign your sea service form. These are all good reasons to maintain your own log book. With this log book you can show your documented time.

Download or read book Cast Net Mastery written by Michael Grimm and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-02 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you want to catch more fish? Of course you do. We all do. I'm Captain Mike. I excelled first as a Recreational Angler and then as a Captain by developing and honing my own techniques with the guidance of some of the best live bait fishermen in the world. Never once have I stopped seeking a better way to catch more fish. If you're not getting better, you're getting worse. I worked hard, asked questions, tried new tactics, observed and studied my results to establish the high-level techniques that I use on a daily basis. And now, I will share them with you so that YOU can also benefit from my obsession. I am not one of those "zero sum" captains that view other anglers as a threat to my livelihood. There are some on the water who believe that their business thrives so long as anglers don't expand and improve their angling skills. Not me. It is my life's joy to see you catch more fish and create more memories. Exceptional anglers helped me along early in my career and I want to help YOU in the same way. I believe in the maxim that a "rising tide floats all boats." For me, my angling success ascended to another level when I dedicated myself to the art of catching all sorts of LIVE BAIT.It's that simple. Mastering the art of cast netting over my thirty-five-year fishing career has enabled me to catch live bait when others cannot. The best piece of advice I can give to anglers of all ages and experience levels is: Use LIVE BAIT. Catching your own live bait results in catching more fish and bigger fish. After years of fishing with clients and friends, being approached at events from iCAST to boat shows, answering more e-mails, private messages and Youtube comments than I can count, it was apparent that I needed to write this book.Through seminars, demonstrations and online videos, I have taught thousands of anglers how to use a cast net. It is my desire to help those who are eager to improve and expand their fishing skills. It gives me great pleasure to share my life's passion through teaching and instruction, not to mention that with every lesson, I am further able to hone my own skillset! Getting kids to shut off video game consoles, putting down the cell phones and encouraging them to go outdoors gives me satisfaction as well. I get a big kick out of seeing parents bond with their children while learning something new and enjoying the outdoors-like I did with my father. With my Mastery Series, I can't wait to share with you everything that I've learned from countless hours of trial and error as well as tips from mentors, professional captains and some of the industry's elite. I will teach you everything you need to become a better fisherman by taking full advantage of your cast net. I'm not holding back. You get it all. By the time you finish this book, not only will you be able to open a cast net in a perfect circle and "make bait" but you will join the "90/10" fishing club. That's right. The other 90% of anglers will envy you and wonder what you are doing differently. Simply put, fishing is about to get a whole lot easier for you.

Book excerpt: Hilarious and oddly inspiring, Trainwreck is proof that a life disastrously lived can still turn out beyond anybody's wildest imaginings. Growing up a privileged Manhattan kid, Jeff Nichols should have had it all. Instead, he got a plethora of impairments: learning disabilities, a speech impediment, dyslexia, ADD, and a mild case of Tourette's syndrome. In Trainwreck, his weird and witty memoir of utter dysfunction, Nichols gives an irreverent look at how one "idoit" made good.

Book excerpt: From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, Words of Radiance, Book Two of the Stormlight Archive, continues the immersive fantasy epic that The Way of Kings began. Expected by his enemies to die the miserable death of a military slave, Kaladin survived to be given command of the royal bodyguards, a controversial first for a low-status "darkeyes." Now he must protect the king and Dalinar from every common peril as well as the distinctly uncommon threat of the Assassin, all while secretly struggling to master remarkable new powers that are somehow linked to his honorspren, Syl. The Assassin, Szeth, is active again, murdering rulers all over the world of Roshar, using his baffling powers to thwart every bodyguard and elude all pursuers. Among his prime targets is Highprince Dalinar, widely considered the power behind the Alethi throne. His leading role in the war would seem reason enough, but the Assassin's master has much deeper motives. Brilliant but troubled Shallan strives along a parallel path. Despite being broken in ways she refuses to acknowledge, she bears a terrible burden: to somehow prevent the return of the legendary Voidbringers and the civilization-ending Desolation that will follow. The secrets she needs can be found at the Shattered Plains, but just arriving there proves more difficult than she could have imagined. Meanwhile, at the heart of the Shattered Plains, the Parshendi are making an epochal decision. Hard pressed by years of Alethi attacks, their numbers ever shrinking, they are convinced by their war leader, Eshonai, to risk everything on a desperate gamble with the very supernatural forces they once fled. The possible consequences for Parshendi and humans alike, indeed, for Roshar itself, are as dangerous as they are incalculable.
