Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "And holding wave and wind in boy’s despite Peered from his dripping seat across the wet and stormy night." Charmides is a beautiful and epic poem rooted in Greek mythology. Whether prose or poetry, drama or tragedy, Oscar Wilde’s writing never fails to fascinate and capture one’s attention. Displaying a different side to the famous Irish writer, this book of poems is no exception. A short but great read for any Wilde fan. Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish playwright, novelist, essayist, and poet, famous for ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ and ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ to name a couple. He died in Paris at the age of 46. 'The Importance of Being Earnest' is Oscar Wilde’s most popular and enduring play. Poking fun at the ridiculousness of human nature, especially that of the Victorian elite, it is both incredibly clever and undeniably silly. It has been performed and made into films and for television many times, most recently in the 2002 film starring Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon and Judi Dench.

Book Plato s Dialogue on Friendship

Download or read book Plato s Dialogue on Friendship written by Plato and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1979, Plato's Dialogue on Friendship is the first book-length interpretation of the Lysis in English, offering both a full analysis and a literal translation of this frequently neglected Platonic dialogue. David Bolotin interprets the Lysis as an important work in its own right and places it in the context of Plato's other writings. He attempts to show that despite Socrates' apparent failure to discover what a friend is, a coherent understanding of friendship emerges in the Lysis. His commentary follows the dialogue closely, and his interpretation unfolds gradually, as he is providing a detailed summary of the Lysis itself. Mr. Bolotin's translation captures the playfulness and rich ambiguities of the Lysis and its effectiveness as conversational drama. His book, written with precision and clarity, should be useful to students of political philosophy and ancient philosophy.

Book C P Cavafy Historical Poems

Download or read book C P Cavafy Historical Poems written by J. Phillipson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-08-02 with total page 847 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cavafy's Historical Poems is the first volume of a four-book set constituting a study of the life and opus of this fascinating poet. The second volume is an anecdotal life detailing Cavafys home and its atmosphere: the man, the poet, and his lifestyle; the odes of his compatriot partisans; the praises of his foreign admirers; the barbs and insults of his critics and revilers; the poet as a critical ironist; and the last part of his life. More than one hundred commentators are quoted, and just as many of his poems are used where it seemed appropriate. A third volume consists of erratic commentaries containing the authors evaluation and criticism of the main contributions to Cavafys poetry. That is these of George Seferis, Sir Maurice Bowra, Robert Liddel, Edmund Keeley, Grigorios Xenopoulos, Timos Malanos, Stratis Tsirkas, John Sareyiannis, and others. These follow an opening chapter on Hellenization and a second chapter on the controversial subject of the dates of composition of Cavafys poems. The fourth volume, The Canon, is a verse translation of the 150 poems Cavafy accepted as his mature opus, including the original Greek verses, accompanied by detailed examination of the poets craft and style. That is to say the meter, length of verse, wedging, rhyme, enjambment, titles, organization, punctuation, the absences, lyricism, periphrasis, description, narrative, suggestive image, abstractions, transmission, maturity, content, language, irony, intellectuality, etc.

  • Author : Gregory Woods
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 1987-01-01

Download or read book Articulate Flesh written by Gregory Woods and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing that homosexual poetry is part of the mainstream of poetic writing--not a distinct and differentiated category within it--Gregory Woods provides a fastidious study of homosexual poetry in the twentieth century that emphasizes the homo-erotic themes in the works of D.H. Lawrence, Hart Crane, W.H. Auden, Allen Ginsberg, and Thom Gunn. Woods's controlled and elegant study demonstrates that a critic who ignores the sexual orientation of a poet, particularly a love poet, risks overlooking the significance of the poetry itself.
