Book Ghost Stories of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County

Download or read book Ghost Stories of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County written by Stephanie Burt Williams and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bustling metropolis of Charlotte is constantly growing and changing. Yet there are spirits from the past that refuse to give way to modern growth, or to be forgotten. The ghost of a Confederate officer, complete with his wooden leg, still appears at historic Cedar Grove. A longdead fireman continues to hang around his old station, and even changes clothes there. At the venerable Manor Theater, the spirit of a former manager often materializes late at night; he sometimes helps with the sweeping. A deceased bootlegger still tries to produce alcohol for his customers. And one small Charlotte house is so haunted that a former resident describes the interior as liquid black, which absorbs even light. Despite the Queen City's long and rich history, until now there has been no published collection of ghost stories from the region. These 19 tales gathered by Stephanie Burt Williams, and enhanced by her superb photographs, were worth the wait.

Book excerpt: "In response to continued demand for books that document this region's African American history, Thriving in the Shadows: The Black Experience in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County has just been released. It contains more than 100 archival photographs that were contributed by members of Charlotte's African American community. Novello Festival Press, the publishing arm of the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, has produced the book. Fannie Flono, Associate Editor of The Charlotte Observer, wrote essays and conducted interviews with prominent members of the black community. Many of the stories are in the voices of those who lived them, and provide insight into how the black residents of Charlotte-Mecklenburg survived and thrived in the shadows of racism, segregation and Jim Crow. These narratives also illuminate present-day issues of race, class and politics."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: In November 2018, Baptist preacher Mark Harris beat the odds, narrowly fending off a blue wave in the sprawling Ninth District of North Carolina. But word soon got around that something fishy was going on in rural Bladen County. At the center of the mess was a local political operative named McCrae Dowless. Dowless had learned the ins and outs of the absentee ballot system from Democrats before switching over to the Republican Party. Bladen County's vote-collecting cottage industry made national headlines, led to multiple election fraud indictments, toppled North Carolina GOP leadership, and left hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians without congressional representation for nearly a year. In The Vote Collectors, Michael Graff and Nick Ochsner tell the story of the political shenanigans in Bladen County, exposing the shocking vulnerability of local elections and explaining why our present systems are powerless to monitor and prevent fraud. In their hands, this tale of rural corruption becomes a fascinating narrative of the long clash of racism and electioneering—and a larger story about the challenges to democracy in the rural South. At a time rife with accusations of election fraud, The Vote Collectors shows the reality of election stealing in one southern county, where democracy was undermined the old-fashioned way: one absentee ballot at a time.

Book Charlotte and Unc Charlotte

Download or read book Charlotte and Unc Charlotte written by Ken Sanford and published by . This book was released on 2021-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlotte might have built the nation's first tax-supported university had an institution begun in 1771 survived the American Revolution, but it did not. Over the years, other efforts to establish a public college or university also failed. By the end of World War II when thousands of returning veterans sought an education on the GI Bill, the city found itself without a public institution to accommodate them. This is the story of visionary citizens and their valiant effort to fill that void. It is the story of Bonnie Cone and the other community leaders who shared her dream: Elmer Garinger, Woody Kennedy, Murrey Atkins, and many others. It is also the story of how Charlotte and UNC Charlotte grew up together: Charlotte from a city of 120,000 to a metropolitan hub of over one million, and UNC Charlotte from a community college to one of North Carolina's leading universities. It is almost certain that neither would have realized such potential without the other. Many state and local leaders provided crucial support. Bill Friday, president of The University of North Carolina, and his assistant Arnold King, recognized the rising needs of the state's largest metropolitan region. At key moments, Governors Terry Sanford, Dan Moore, and Robert Scott played pivotal roles. In succession, Chancellors Dean Colvard, E. K. Fretwell, Jr., and James H. Woodward arrived to accept the challenge of building a great university. Throughout, it is the story of dedicated professors, administrators, staff members, students, and generous friends who shared the vision and worked to make it a reality. It is also a story of struggle: first for existence, then for facilities and public support, and finally for state and national recognition. Above all it is a story of success--of triumph over apathy, of startling growth, of rapid progress, of entrepreneurial verve, and of increasing excellence.
