Book excerpt: When Charlie Sykes wakes up in hospital in St. John's, he learns that he and his father have been in a car accident and that his father is dying. Charlie inherits little more than the brass key that his father pressed into his hand before he passed away. As far as Charlie knows, he has no family in Newfoundland. But then Uncle Nick shows up and is keen to meet his nephew-not because of who Charlie is, but rather because of what Charlie has: the key. That key will unlock a treasure Uncle Nick began searching for more than thirty years earlier. And he would have found it all those years ago if he hadn't been arrested and sent away for murder. But Charlie isn't convinced he should give up the key. He leads Uncle Nick on a wild chase through old St. John's, across Signal Hill and out to the coast. There, high above the rugged Atlantic, Charlie finally comes face-to-face with Uncle Nick, the treasure, and a family history that will leave him with a new understanding of where he comes from and where he's going.

Book excerpt: Brixton Keys gorgeously realized Charlie Six stands among the best coming-of-age novels with its poetic and realistic evocation of London in the 1960s and a boy who needs to bust out of its post-war mentality. Of course, it doesn't help that his father is a gangster and his mother a world-class nightlife addict. Charlie Six is as much at home mixing 'Gin and Its' as he is listening to the rock music and Beat poetry that charts his growth and finally leads to his escape. He has the frankness and tenderness of the best main characters with his truthful gaze and penetrating sense of his own circumstances. What Charlie learns along the way is both heartbreaking and hilarious – Maxine Chernoff, "Some of Her Friends That Year"

Book excerpt: In the 6th and final book in the mystery series featuring the Chinese-American detective Charlie Chan, we find our hero in Lake Tahoe, California. Chan has been invited as a house guest. He meets a glamorous Out of Printera singer, Ellen Landini, and she is murdered by a gunshot during a party. Her servants and four of her ex-husbands are suspects in the case, all with weak alibis. It is up to Chan to solve the murder. The clues are cryptic and misleading by nature: the singer's own revolver, two scarves, two cigarette boxes with mismatched lids, and the actions of a little dog named Trouble. Part of the solution to the mystery involves an elderly Chinese servant named Ah Sing-the keeper of the keys. Chan solves the case in his usual understated, spectacular fashion.

Book The Redemption of Charlie Devlin

Download or read book The Redemption of Charlie Devlin written by Gerald C. Hickey and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers ranging from twenty somethings to octogenarians have raved about Gerald Hickey´s The Redemption of Charlie Devlin. --Bill Connolly of Ocala, Florida, said that he had a difficult time putting the novel down. --Reader Gloria Naas of Kingston, Ohio, commented, "It left an impact on me like no other book I´ve read. It´s the only book I have ever read twice." --Julie McGuire of Colorado Springs, Colorado, called the novel "a great read." Here is a synopsis of the book, also acclaimed as well written and insightful: Recently divorced by his attractive wife, Sheila, and removed from the crime beat at The Phoenix Post, Charlie Devlin feels adrift in a murky sea of uncertainty. He plies himself with alcohol as he gropes for an anchor. Traumatized by his divorce, he has lost his touch as a crime reporter. His city editor has placed him on probation and assigned him to the education beat. Charlie has fought boredom on his new job for several weeks, when someone murders Leslie Cashman, a dedicated young high school teacher. As a crime reporter, he became inured to homicides, but the brutal murder of Leslie gnaws at him. The turbulent eighties are winding down when the teacher is slain in Verde Hills, a Phoenix suburb. Although Charlie pines for Sheila, he was beginning to have tender feelings for Leslie, whom he met when he interviewed her for a story. Her death changes the lives of several people, in addition to 33-year-old Charlie. He decides to try to help police solve the murder case. ...He saw a fresh vision of the fair sex in Leslie´s caring, hopeful spirit. She might have restored his faith in women. The world needed more, not fewer, people like Leslie.... The epitome of a rootless urbanite in the new Southwest, Charlie is a flesh-and-blood character with recognizable faults and frustrations, not a larger-than-life hero with nerves of steel. He typifies legions of thirty-somethings who have fallen short of their own or others´ expectations. As he tries to atone for his failings by helping solve Leslie´s murder, he finds evil in unexpected places. He stumbles on an unrelated homicide and becomes involved in the case, before he can find the key to Leslie´s death.

Book The House Without a Key A Charlie Chan Mystery

Download or read book The House Without a Key A Charlie Chan Mystery written by Earl Derr Biggers and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-29 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The House Without a Key is a novel that was written in 1925 by Earl Derr Biggers. It is the first of the Charlie Chan mysteries written by Biggers. The novel is remarkable in two respects. First, although Chan is ostensibly the detective, his role in the book is fairly small. He does figure out the solution to the case, but it is at the same time as Winterslip, and it is the Bostonian who has the honor of collaring the murderer. Second, the novel's portrayal of the Chinese, specifically Charlie Chan, is forward-looking for its era. The Bostonians find it hard to accept a Chinese detective on the case, but the locals know him by reputation and show him respect. While, some of the descriptions evince some of the stereotypes of the day, Chan is portrayed sympathetically, as an equal to the whites that surround him. (Indeed, Charlie Chan's superior, a white Captain of Detectives, puts him on the case and trusts him completely.)

Book excerpt: The novel, which takes place in the 1920s Hawaii, spends time acquainting the reader with the look and feel of the islands of that era from the standpoint of both white and non-white inhabitants, and describes social class structures and customs which have largely vanished in the 21st century. The novel deals with the murder of a former member of Boston society who has lived in Hawaii for a number of years. The main character is the victim's nephew, a straitlaced young Bostonian bond trader, who came to the islands to try to convince his aunt Minerva, whose vacation has extended many months, to return to Boston. The nephew, John Quincy Winterslip, soon falls under the spell of the islands himself, meets an attractive young woman, breaks his engagement to his straitlaced Bostonian fiancee Agatha, and decides after the murder is solved to move to San Francisco. In the interval, he is introduced to many levels of Hawaiian society and is of some assistance to Detective Charlie Chan in solving the mystery.
