The "Confessions of Harry Lorrequer" had been favourably received by a public ever indulgent to first efforts; and the Press most good-naturedly overlooked many an error in the anxiety to welcome one who had, after all, only contributed the overflowings of a very light-hearted and enjoyable temperament. Like the lucky Cockney, who shot a swallow on the wing in his first effort at sportsmanship, I felt great reluctance ever to reload my piece for a second trial. Small as the success was, I had no fancy to peril it. I fancied how my silence might foster many a speculation of what I might have been were I only prudent enough not to destroy the illusion. Single-speech Hamilton is a celebrity to this hour; and there was great wisdom in the example. Excellent as were all these reasons - doubly powerful to one who loved his idleness, as it has been my unlucky lot to do through life - they were all routed by an invitation from my publisher to try my hand at something beyond the peace campaigns of a soldier. These publishers are wonderful fellows. They hold the curtain which hangs between the author and the public; and even at the chance glimpses they permit you to catch of "the house," they suggest most ambitious longings for the applause of the crowded benches before you.
