Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genius and dilettantism often go hand in hand. Nowhere is this truer than in the life of Charles-Edouard Brown-Séquard, the bilingual physician and neurologist who succeeded Claude Bernard as the Chair of Experimental Medicine at the College de France in Paris after having practiced in Paris, London and in the USA, especially in Harvard. For most men, making one discovery of global importance would have sufficed to satisfy their curiosity and self-image. Not so Brown-Séquard. His explanation of the neurological disparity following the hemi-section of the spinal cord was a unique achievement that added his name to the syndrome and made him immortal. Yet, the demons of his mind tormented him in his endless search for medical truths and drove him to explore other phenomena, seeking to explain and remedy them. This unique biography shows for the first time the conflict between his professional and personal life, and should appeal to all students of medical history and psychology.

Book excerpt: "'Truth at any cost, even my own,' has always been the uncompromising motto of the true philosopher . . . The pains to which Dr. Brown-Séquard has voluntarily subjected himself in pursuing the experiments which form the subject of this book should not be forgotten . . ." (Newell Dunbar, 1896)The eminent physician Dr. Brown-Séquard was not afraid of putting his body on the line for the good of science. His extreme self-experimentation included the swallowing of sponges attached to string, which he would later pull out to inspect what had been soaked up. This book, however, is dedicated to one of his experiments that stands out above all others - Injecting the minced testicles of animals as a means of rejuvenation. In the late 19th Century, Séquard's concoction had become the world famous 'elixir of life' and was being administered by tens of thousands of physicians.Following a short biography of Séquard's life achievements, this book comprises a collection of reports on his experiments with minced testicles. Anyone with an interest in bizarre and historic science will enjoy this unique and surreal journey of discovery into which animal testicles are best injected, how much water should be added to the mixture, filtered vs. unfiltered, and whether or not a drop of cocaine may help to reduce the soreness? This latest addition also includes a chapter on how Séquard's testicle juice led to even more outrageous medical practice 30 years later, with the implantation of entire animal testicles.

Book Suspensions of Perception

Download or read book Suspensions of Perception written by Jonathan Crary and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2001-08-24 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suspensions of Perception decisively relocates the problem of aesthetic contemplation within a broader collective encounter with the unstable nature of perception—in psychology, philosophy, neurology, early cinema, and photography. Suspensions of Perception is a major historical study of human attention and its volatile role in modern Western culture. It argues that the ways in which we intently look at or listen to anything result from crucial changes in the nature of perception that can be traced back to the second half of the nineteenth century. Focusing on the period from about 1880 to 1905, Jonathan Crary examines the connections between the modernization of subjectivity and the dramatic expansion and industrialization of visual/auditory culture. At the core of his project is the paradoxical nature of modern attention, which was both a fundamental condition of individual freedom, creativity, and experience and a central element in the efficient functioning of economic and disciplinary institutions as well as the emerging spaces of mass consumption and spectacle. Crary approaches these issues through multiple analyses of single works by three key modernist painters—Manet, Seurat, and Cezanne—who each engaged in a singular confrontation with the disruptions, vacancies, and rifts within a perceptual field. Each in his own way discovered that sustained attentiveness, rather than fixing or securing the world, led to perceptual disintegration and loss of presence, and each used this discovery as the basis for a reinvention of representational practices. Suspensions of Perception decisively relocates the problem of aesthetic contemplation within a broader collective encounter with the unstable nature of perception—in psychology, philosophy, neurology, early cinema, and photography. In doing so, it provides a historical framework for understanding the current social crisis of attention amid the accelerating metamorphoses of our contemporary technological culture.

Book William James on Consciousness beyond the Margin

Download or read book William James on Consciousness beyond the Margin written by Eugene Taylor and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the twentieth century, William James was America's most widely read philosopher. In addition to being one of the founders of pragmatism, however, he was also a leading psychologist and author of the seminal work, The Principles of Psychology (1890). While scholars argue that James withdrew from the study of psychology after 1890, Eugene Taylor demonstrates convincingly that James remained preeminently a psychologist until his death in 1910. Taylor details James's contributions to experimental psychopathology, psychical research, and the psychology of religion. Moreover, Taylor's work shows that out of his scientific study of consciousness, James formulated a sophisticated metaphysics of radical empiricism. In light of historical developments in psychology, as well as the current philosophic implications of the neuroscience revolution related to the biology of consciousness, Taylor argues that both the subject matter of James's investigations and his metaphysics of radical empiricism are just as important for psychology today as James believed they were in his own time. This book represents a major new contribution both to James scholarship and to the history of American psychology. Although philosophers have analyzed radical empiricism, this book is the first to trace the development of radical empiricism as a metaphysics addressed to psychologists. It is also the first to show James's involvement in depth-psychology and psychotherapeutics and to trace historical continuity between James's work on consciousness and subsequent developments in psychoanalysis, personality theory, and humanistic psychology.

Book Reflections on the Principles of Psychology

Download or read book Reflections on the Principles of Psychology written by Michael G. Johnson and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important volume looks back to 1890 and -- 100 years later -- asks some of the same questions William James was asking in his Principles of Psychology. In so doing, it reviews our progress toward their solutions. Among the contemporary concerns of 1990 that the editors consider are: the nature of the self and the will, conscious experience, associationism, the basic acts of cognition, and the nature of perception. Their findings: Although the developments in each of these areas during the last 100 years have been monumental, James' views as presented in the Principles still remain viable and provocative. To provide a context for understanding James, some chapters are devoted primarily to recent scholarship about James himself -- focusing on the time the Principles was written, relevant intellectual influences, and considerations of his understanding of this "new" science of psychology. The balance of this volume is devoted to specific topics of particular interest to James. One critical theme woven into almost every chapter is the tension between the role of experience (or phenomenological data) within a scientific psychology, and the viability of a materialistic (or biologically reductive) account of mental life. Written for professionals, practitioners, and students of psychology -- in all disciplines.

Book excerpt: Anabolic steroids have traditionally been controversial in the sporting arena. With evidence of widespread steroid abuse among the general population, health professionals are citing the emergence of an epidemic. Anabolic Steroids and Other Performance-Enhancing Drugs brings together key issues surrounding these contentious drugs. The book outlines the history and social context of these compounds, including details on their development, prevalence, and implications for society. It provides a review of their physiological and psychological side effects, as well as discussions of other performance-enhancing substances based on the banned drug list of the International Olympic Committee. This timely book presents a clear description of anabolic steroid use and abuse both in sports and within the general population. It is a reliable source of information for professionals and students in the fields of sport science, pharmacology, pharmacy, and related health sciences.
