Book Energy and Particle Densities from Oxygen induced Nuclear Reactions

Download or read book Energy and Particle Densities from Oxygen induced Nuclear Reactions written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charged particle multiplicity and pseudo-rapidity distributions observed in 16O induced nuclear collisions at 60 and 200 A GeV are presented in conjunction with forward and transverse energy distributions. From the measurements estimates of the supreme energy density obtained in central 16O + 197Au collisions at 200 A GeV yield a value of about 3 GeV/fm3 seemingly enough to fulfill the presumptions for chiral symmetry restoration. The target mass dependence on the pseudo-rapidity densities is examined using a power law parametrization. The data are also compared to simulations from the Lund model (Fritiof) for nucleus-nucleus collisions. 15 refs., 7 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Editors Preface: "Quark Matter 1987 was attended by about 250 scientists, representing 75 research institutions around the world - the scientific community engaged in experimental and theoretical studies of high energy nuclear collisions. The central theme of the meeting was the possibility of achieving extreme energy densities in extended systems of strongly interacting matter - with the ultimate aim of creating in the laboratory a deconfined state of matter, a state in which quarks and gluons attain the active degrees of freedom. High energy accelerator beams and cosmic radiation projectiles provide the experimental tools for this endeavour; on the theoretical side, it is intimately connected to recent developments in the non-perturbative study of quantum chromodynamics. Phase transitions between hadronic matter and quark-gluon plasma are of basic interest also for our understanding of the dynamics of the early universe ... A very special feature of this Sixth Quark Matter Conference was the advent of the first experimental results from dedicated accelerator studies. These were conducted during 1986/87 at the AGS of Brookhaven National Laboratory ... and at the CERN SPS ... An intense discussion of these data formed the main activity of the meeting.

Book Preliminary Results from Collisions Between 3 2 TeV 16O and Target Nuclei of C Cu and Au

Download or read book Preliminary Results from Collisions Between 3 2 TeV 16O and Target Nuclei of C Cu and Au written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preliminary data is presented for the interactions of oxygen 16 with carbon, copper, and gold at 60 and 200 GeV/nucleon. This preliminary data included total charged-particle multiplicity distributions and transverse energy distributions. Ranges of transverse momentum per particle and of possible energy densities were discussed. The ultimate goal of the experiment was to search for the transition from hadronic matter to deconfined quark matter. Such a transition may occur in the finite volume of hadronic matter that is formed with high energy density in very high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. It is estimated that the required critical energy density may be reached in central collisions between sufficiently large nuclei, provided that the degree of nuclear stopping is high enough to concentrate a large fraction of the available center of mass energy at mid-rapidity. Thus the immediate goal of the experiment was to study the extent of stopping and the nature of the baryon-poor excited nuclear matter in the rapidity range intermediate between the projectile and the target rapidities. The experiment also sought to investigate the fragmentation region associated with the target remnants. The experimental arrangement consisted of the following detector systems: the Plastic Ball, several charged-particle multiplicity arrays, the Wall Calorimeter, SAPHIR (Single-Arm Photon Detector for Heavy Ion Reactions), the time-of-flight wall, and the Zero-Degree Calorimeter. 15 refs., 3 figs. (DWL).

Book Transverse Energy and Multiplicity from Heavy Ion Collisions at 200 A GeV

Download or read book Transverse Energy and Multiplicity from Heavy Ion Collisions at 200 A GeV written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The successful acceleration of light ions at the CERN SPS and at the Brookhaven AGS opened the exciting field of ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions for systematic studies. The first experiments were designed mainly to survey the reactions and to establish the essential features of the collisions. In this paper results from the WA80 experiment on transverse energy and charged particle multiplicity are reported. These two quantities are determined by most of the experiments and can be used to characterize the events. Large multiplicities and large transverse energies are correlated with violet collisions or with small impact parameters. In addition, an estimate of the energy density reached in the collision can be derived from those two measurements. One would like to know if the energy density necessary for the transition to the quark gluon plasma has been reached. The results of the first round of experiments with oxygen ions at 60 and 200 GeV per nucleon are collected in the proceedings of the Quark Matter 88 Conference. Some of these results are summarized here together with new results on multiplicity fluctuations.

Book A Study of the Average Multiplicity and Multiplicity Distributions in Hadron Nucleus Collisions at High Energies

Download or read book A Study of the Average Multiplicity and Multiplicity Distributions in Hadron Nucleus Collisions at High Energies written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a simple counter experiment requiring about 40 hours of data taking time we propose to study the detailed shape of the multiplicity distribution for larger values of n and the average charged particle multiplicity in hadron-nucleus collisions at 100 and 200 Gev. The results of the experiment should be a valuable input for ccmparison with theoretical models, in particular they should provide a sensitive test ot whether multipartlcle production in hadron-nucleon collisions proceeds through a one or two step process.

Book Interactions of 200 GeV c Protons with Emulsion Nuclei Charged Particle Multiplicities

Download or read book Interactions of 200 GeV c Protons with Emulsion Nuclei Charged Particle Multiplicities written by and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experimental data on the multiplicity distributions for various kinds of secondaries produced in the proton-nucleus interactions in emulsion at 200 GeV/c and the correlations between them are presented and discussed. All the characteristics of heavy prongs (mean values n{sub b}, n{sub g}, N{sub h}, their distributions and correlations) are independent (or have a very weak dependence) on the collisions energy in the range 20-200 GeV/c. The data contradict to the cascade-evaporation model and qualitatively agree with the mechanism of particle emission via the long-lived intermediate states. The observed weak A-dependence (≈ A{sup 0.15}) of shower particle distributions is in agreement with the calculated ones according to the simplified two-step model. It is shown that the n{sub s}-distributions agree well with KNO scaling law in the 67-200 GeV/c range, but the form of universal [psi](n{sub s/n{sub s}})-function has a weak A-dependence.

Book Transverse Energy Distribution Charged Particle Multiplicities and Spectra in 16O nucleus Collisions

Download or read book Transverse Energy Distribution Charged Particle Multiplicities and Spectra in 16O nucleus Collisions written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The HELIOS (High Energy Lepton and Ion Spectrometer) experiment, installed at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron, proposes to examine in details the physical properties of a state of high energy created in nuclei by ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. It is generally believed that, at high densities or temperatures, a phase transition to a plasma of quark and gluons will occur. The dynamic of the expansion of such a plasma and its subsequent condensation into a hadron gas should markedly affect the composition and momentum distribution of the emerging particles and photons. The HELIOS experimental setup therefore combines 4.pi. calorimetric coverage with measurements of inclusive particle spectra, two particle correlations, low and high mass lepton pairs and photons. The emphasis is placed on transverse energy flow (E/sub T/) measurements with good energy resolution, and the ability to trigger the acquisition of data in a variety of E/sub T/ ranges, thereby selecting the impact parameter or the violence of the collisions. This short note presents HELIOS results, for the most part still preliminary, on 16O-nucleus collisions at the incident energies of 60 and 200 GeV per nucleon. The E/sub T/ distributions from Al, Ag and W targets are discussed and compared to the associated charged particle multiplicities from W. Charged particle and (converted) photon spectra measured with the external magnetic spectrometer are compared for 16O + W and p + W collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon. 5 refs., 7 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EPS - High Energy Physics '89 presents the proceeding of the International Europhysics Conference on High Energy physics, held in Madrid, Spain, on September 6–13, 1989. This book outlines several topics on the interface between cosmology/astrophysics and particle physics. Organized into two parts encompassing 181 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the implications of the cosmic light element abundances. This text then examines the various aspects of lattice field theory. Other chapters consider the theoretical evidence of a fundamental length in string theory and outline the main features of the higher order corrections to the heavy quark inclusive cross section. This book discusses as well the theory of heavy quark production in hadron collision. The final chapter deals with the idea of low-energy supersymmetry, which relates the scale of supersymmetry breaking to the origin and stability of the electroweak scale. This book is a valuable resource for astrophysicists, physicists, and scientists.

Book Use of Services for Family Planning and Infertility United States 1982

Download or read book Use of Services for Family Planning and Infertility United States 1982 written by Gerry E. Hendershot and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1982 statistics on the use of family planning and infertility services presented in this report are preliminary results from Cycle III of the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG), conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics. Data were collected through personal interviews with a multistage area probability sample of 7969 women aged 15-44. A detailed series of questions was asked to obtain relatively complete estimates of the extent and type of family planning services received. Statistics on family planning services are limited to women who were able to conceive 3 years before the interview date. Overall, 79% of currently mrried nonsterile women reported using some type of family planning service during the previous 3 years. There were no statistically significant differences between white (79%), black (75%) or Hispanic (77%) wives, or between the 2 income groups. The 1982 survey questions were more comprehensive than those of earlier cycles of the survey. The annual rate of visits for family planning services in 1982 was 1077 visits /1000 women. Teenagers had the highest annual visit rate (1581/1000) of any age group for all sources of family planning services combined. Visit rates declined sharply with age from 1447 at ages 15-24 to 479 at ages 35-44. Similar declines with age also were found in the visit rates for white and black women separately. Nevertheless, the annual visit rate for black women (1334/1000) was significantly higher than that for white women (1033). The highest overall visit rate was for black women 15-19 years of age (1867/1000). Nearly 2/3 of all family planning visits were to private medical sources. Teenagers of all races had higher family planning service visit rates to clinics than to private medical sources, as did black women age 15-24. White women age 20 and older had higher visit rates to private medical services than to clinics. Never married women had higher visit rates to clinics than currently or formerly married women. Data were also collected in 1982 on use of medical services for infertility by women who had difficulty in conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to term. About 1 million ever married women had 1 or more infertility visits in the 12 months before the interview. During the 3 years before interview, about 1.9 million women had infertility visits. For all ever married women, as well as for white and black women separately, infertility services were more likely to be secured from private medical sources than from clinics. The survey design, reliability of the estimates and the terms used are explained in the technical notes.
