Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heterogenous Wastes Characterization Methods and Recommendations addresses the problems faced by investigators when attempting to characterize heterogenous wastes contaminated with hazardous chemicals and/or radionuclides. The book is the result of a workshop conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy to devise methods for cleaning up waste sites, including landfills and drum dumps, where these chemicals have been spilled or improperly stored. The book summarizes study planning tools, sampling design strategies, and field and laboratory methods now in use. It also identifies the advantages and disadvantages of each method. In addition, the book identifies areas that would benefit from methodological research or development or the adoption of new approaches. Pertinent regulatory definitions have been assembled and augmented with practical working definitions. Heterogenous Wastes Characterization Methods and Recommendations is essential for personnel who work with hazardous wastes or in sanitary engineering firms.

Book An Approach for Sampling Solid Heterogeneous Waste at the Hanford Site Waste Receiving and Processing and Solid Waste Projects

Download or read book An Approach for Sampling Solid Heterogeneous Waste at the Hanford Site Waste Receiving and Processing and Solid Waste Projects written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper addresses the problem of obtaining meaningful data from samples of solid heterogeneous waste while maintaining sample rates as low as practical. The Waste Receiving and Processing Facility, Module 1, at the Hanford Site in south-central Washington State will process mostly heterogeneous solid wastes. The presence of hazardous materials is documented for some packages and unknown for others. Waste characterization is needed to segregate the waste, meet waste acceptance and shipping requirements, and meet facility permitting requirements. Sampling and analysis are expensive, and no amount of sampling will produce absolute certainty of waste contents. A sampling strategy is proposed that provides acceptable confidence with achievable sampling rates.

Book Strategy and Methodology for Radioactive Waste Characterization

Download or read book Strategy and Methodology for Radioactive Waste Characterization written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade significant progress has been achieved in the development of waste characterization and control procedures and equipment as a direct response to ever-increasing requirements for quality and reliability of information on waste characteristics. Failure in control procedures at any step can have important, adverse consequences and may result in producing waste packages which are not compliant with the waste acceptance criteria for disposal, thereby adversely impacting the repository. The information and guidance included in this publication corresponds to recent achievements and reflects the optimum approaches, thereby reducing the potential for error and enhancing the quality of the end product. -- Publisher's description.

Book Determination and Use of Scaling Factors for Waste Characterization in Nuclear Power Plants

Download or read book Determination and Use of Scaling Factors for Waste Characterization in Nuclear Power Plants written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication will assist Member States with the formation and implementation of efficient strategies for safe and cost effective classification and disposal of nuclear wastes. By exploiting the benefits of the scaling factor (SF) method of waste characterization, waste management professionals can facilitate the processing of larger quantities of heterogeneous radioactive waste. Whereas before, the complexity of quantifying difficult-to-measure (DTM) nuclides within sealed waste packages frustrated the efficient management of their disposal, the new SF methodology exploits known quantifiable ratios of DTM to easy-to-measure (ETM) nuclides so as to facilitate radioactive waste processing. This publication contains guidance and case studies from Member States where the technique has been successfully deployed, and provides an essential and effective complement to the recently published ISO standard 21238:2007 on the same topic.

Book Contaminants in the Subsurface

Download or read book Contaminants in the Subsurface written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-04-23 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At hundreds of thousands of commercial, industrial, and military sites across the country, subsurface materials including groundwater are contaminated with chemical waste. The last decade has seen growing interest in using aggressive source remediation technologies to remove contaminants from the subsurface, but there is limited understanding of (1) the effectiveness of these technologies and (2) the overall effect of mass removal on groundwater quality. This report reviews the suite of technologies available for source remediation and their ability to reach a variety of cleanup goals, from meeting regulatory standards for groundwater to reducing costs. The report proposes elements of a protocol for accomplishing source remediation that should enable project managers to decide whether and how to pursue source remediation at their sites.

Book Characterizing Petrochemical Wastes for Combustion

Download or read book Characterizing Petrochemical Wastes for Combustion written by JL. Hansen and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waste characterization is the first step for the design of an incinerator or for the prediction of a waste's combustion performance in an existing incinerator or other combustion device. Many petrochemical wastes are heterogeneous, so traditional analytical techniques that were developed to handle relatively pure or homogeneous coal or oil samples may not be efficacious. This paper will discuss the problems encountered in using traditional analytical techniques for waste characterization and some solutions to these problems. The analytical areas discussed include elemental composition, ash content, organic content, and metal content. A statistical analysis plan (not a sampling plan) is proposed for handling heterogeneous chemical waste.

Book Improving the Characterization Program for Contact Handled Transuranic Waste Bound for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant

Download or read book Improving the Characterization Program for Contact Handled Transuranic Waste Bound for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-02-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As operational experience is gained in the disposal of transuranic waste from nuclear weapons facilities at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico, the Department of Energy (DOE) has opportunities to change how it "characterizes" waste to confirm that it is appropriate for shipment to and disposal at the underground repository. The waste shipped to the facility includes gloves, rags, tools, and other debris or dried sludge that has been contaminated by radioactive elements, including plutonium, during production or cleanup activities in the DOE weapons complex. However, before the DOE seeks regulatory approval for changes to its characterization program, the agency should conduct and publish a systematic and quantitative assessment to show that the proposed changes would not affect the protection of workers, the public, or the environment, according to the committee. The assessment should take into account technical factors, societal and regulatory impacts, and the time and effort required to make the changes.

Book Characterization of Remote Handled Transuranic Waste for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant
