Book excerpt: Book & CD. Coal mine dust is one of the most serious occupational hazards in the coal mining industry, and overexposure can cause coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) and a number of other lung diseases, collectively referred to a black lung disease. CWP has been the underlying or contributing cause of death for more than 75,000 coal miners since 1968. This book provides an overview of key studies, background history and health reviews on occupational exposure to respirable coal mine dust.

Book Characterization of Forms of Silica with Varying Degrees of Crystallinity in Respirable Mine Dust

Download or read book Characterization of Forms of Silica with Varying Degrees of Crystallinity in Respirable Mine Dust written by Saboor Ahmad Torabi and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal was, is, and will be one of the major energy sources for our society. Coal mining activities, from extraction to utilization, intrinsically produce coal dust and its associated aerosols, which are known to be safety and health hazards. Within the mine dust aerosols, the exposure of the respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust is the most toxic component for the coal workers. Excessive RCS exposure can potentially cause the development of disabling and irreversible lung disease which is known as silicosis. The silicosis cases and its related mortality trend are still high in the United States, and the recent resurgence of coal miners' lung disease sends an alarming sign for the industry. Characterization of the physiochemical properties of RCS is the prerequisite for the improved understanding of its toxicity and adverse effects on miners' respiratory system. In this study, the mineral composition of respirable coal mine dust (RCMD), and type (s) of crystalline silica with its varying degrees of crystallinity in the mine dust were investigated. For this purpose, samples were collected from the top of coal (ToC) and bottom of coal (BoC) rock strata, which are believed to have the highest amount of crystalline silica. In addition, we also collected rock samples from both the roof and pillar of a limestone mine in Pennsylvania to define its crystalline components for potential silica characterization. After preparing the lab-generated respirable dust using a cryomill, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique in combination with JADE software was employed to identify the mineral phases and determine the quantitative mineral composition. The results from the quantitative analysis revealed that quartz (crystalline silica), muscovite, kaolinite, and clinochlore are the most abundant minerals in the ToC and BoC strata. The average amount of crystalline silica (quartz) was assessed to be 25% in the ToC and 17.3% in the BoC samples from the Lower Freeport coal seam. The quartz content in the samples from the ToC strata of Lower Kittanning was found to be 16.5%. Furthermore, phase identification analyses determined that, among the quartz types, alpha quartz ([alpha]-quartz) is the only type that exists in the samples. The quantitative analysis also reported a considerable amount of amorphous content for all samples. The amorphous content associated with the samples from near the coal seam comparatively showed a higher quantity, suggesting that the coal-ToC and coal-BoC interfaces contain a significant amount of amorphous. The quantitative analyses of limestone samples reported high calcite and dolomite with negligible quartz content. The amount of quartz in the sample from the pillar of the limestone mine was 0.22%, whereas no quartz was reported for the sample from the roof of the same mine. According to the results, it is advisable to conduct additional elemental analysis to verify the mineral composition of the samples. Additionally, it is recommended to undertake comprehensive investigations into the mineralogy and toxicity of the amorphous content found in coal mine dust, especially those originating from the interfaces of coal and rock strata.

Book Respirable Dust Levels in Coal Metal and Nonmetal Mines

Download or read book Respirable Dust Levels in Coal Metal and Nonmetal Mines written by Winthrop F. Watts and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1980 the Bureau of Mines developed the Mine Inspection Data Analysis System (MIDAS). MIDAS is a computerized, industrial hygiene data base capable of statistically analyzing environmental data collected in coal and noncoal mines and mills by Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors or mine operators. The objectives of this report are to describe the current contents of MIDAS, to report analyses of coal and noncoal mine respirable dust samples collected by MSHA inspectors and to evaluate the proposed change in the metal and nonmetal respirable dust standard from a formula based upon the percentage of quartz identified in the sample to 100 μg/m3 of respirable quartz. Based on samples collected by MSHA inspectors, changing the noncoal respirable dust standard would result in 4 pct fewer samples with dust concentrations exceeding the standard. Analysis of respirable coal dust data collected by MSHA inspectors showed that mines with longwall plows or shears had the highest geometric mean concentrations (1.64 and 1.29 mg/m3, respectively). Mine operations using continuous rippers out-numbered longwall mine operations about 10 to 1 and had a geometric mean concentration of 0.66 mg/m3.

Download or read book Proceedings of the Symposium on Respirable Coal Mine Dust Washington D C November 3 4 1969 written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of its continuing program in protecting the health and safety of the nation's coal miners, the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, presented on November 3-4, 1969, a Symposium on Respirable Coal Mine Dust. The Symposium was cosponsored by the American Mining Congress, the National Coal Association, and the National Independent Coal Operator's Association. Within recent years it has become evident that a large number of our coal miners develop a severe occupational respiratory disease commonly referred to as "black lung," but more appropriately designated as "coal worker's pneumoconiosis." Studies in the United States as well as in European countries clearly demonstrate that prevention of the disease is related to the control and suppression of respirable coal mine dust. This Symposium dealt with the various engineering methods of controlling dust in underground coal mines including ventialation, water suppression, machine design, and dust collection; and a discussion of respirators and life support systems. The merits of these various procedures and their potential application to underground coal mining were examined. In every case attempts were made to secure outstanding talent in each of the major areas discussed. The proceedings of the Symposium should constitue a reference on current technology for dust control. The Symposium helped to delineate those areas where additional research is needed and highlighted the necessity for concentrated efforts by both industry and Government for intensive research and investigative programs on engineering procedures to control respirable coal mine dust within prescribed hygienic limits. Hopefully, research will move so rapidly that within a reasonably short time this publication will be out of date in terms of dust control technology

Book Dust Control Handbook for Industrial Minerals Mining and Processing

Download or read book Dust Control Handbook for Industrial Minerals Mining and Processing written by Andrew B. Andrew B. Cecala and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-05-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the mining and processing of minerals, the mined ore undergoes a number of crushing, grinding, cleaning, drying, and product sizing operations as it is processed into a marketable commodity. These operations are highly mechanized, and both individually and collectively these processes can generate large amounts of dust. If control technologies are inadequate, hazardous levels of respirable dust may be liberated into the work environment, potentially exposing workers. Accordingly, federal regulations are in place to limit the respirable dust exposure of mine workers. Engineering controls are implemented in mining operations in an effort to reduce dust generation and limit worker exposure.
